SIXTH ANNUAL CARDBOARD BOAT RACE in
Schuylerville.Hudson Crossing Park presents its 6th Annual
Cardboard Boat Race on Saturday, August 14th (rain date
Sunday, August 15th) at the Fort Hardy Beach on Route 29 in
Schuylerville. Registration opens at 8:00am and boats launch
at 1:00pm. Race entry fees are between $10 and $25. This FREE
event includes live music, great food and lots of prizes Best
photo opportunities are at 12:30pm. A list of rules, registration
forms and hints to get started with your boat building is available
at www.hudsoncrossingpark.org or by calling Marlene Bissell
at: 518.859.1462. Racing participants will construct a “human-
powered” boat made of corrugated cardboard or 100% recycled
materials, that will hold at least 1 crew member and be
“seaworthy” enough to race a short distance on the river. Racers
may construct their boats ahead of time or on the morning of
the event, where materials will be available at the event site.
During racing preparations, there will be live music, great food,
t-shirt sales and terrific photo opportunities in a fun-filled day
for all. Individuals, families, or groups, business & school teams
are all encouraged to race. Whether you come as a crew member,

BICYCLE TOUR Explore the history and scenery of Saratoga
National Historical Park, located on Route 32 and 4 in Stillwater, County
by joining a Park Ranger for a free guided bike tour of the battlefield
at 6:00pm to 7:30pm on Wednesday August 18. Participants

HUDSON FALLS
THIRD ANNUAL HARVESTFEST IN SALEM September
11, 2010. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its
third annual HarvestFest on Saturday, September 11. HarvestFest
is a celebration of the end of the growing season with local food,
music, art and activities for the entire family. There will be an all-
day market starting at 10:00 am followed by a “Farm to Fork”
Dinner and Barn Dance at 6:00 pm. All events take place at Salem
Art Works on Cary Lane from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm. A silent
auction will help raise funds for the Chamber’s Crisis Fund, which
helps families in the community experiencing a medical crisis.
The HarvestFest Marketplace features local produce and
homemade goodies for sale. The “Farm to Fork” dinner is sourced
from locally grown food. This year, well known duo Al and Kathy
Bain will be performing their traditional country, bluegrass and
gospel music. Eat and dance to great local music until 9:00 pm.
Beer and wine available for purchase. Admission to the day time
activities is free. Dinner is $20 for adults; $6 for children under
10; and free for children under 5. Tickets for the dinner go on sale
June 19 at Jackson Traders, Glens Falls National Bank and the
Summer Sounds of Salem concerts on Saturdays in Salem. All
activities are held at Salem Art Works on 19 Cary Lane, off West

PENN STATION’S CONSTRUCTION. On Wednesday,
August 18, at 7:00 p.m. @ Cambridge Historical Society and
Museum, David DeVries, an Argyle resident who has produced,
directed, written and often photographed television
documentaries in thirty-one countries, will present portions of
his History Channel documentary describing the amazing story
of Penn Station’s construction and opening on September 8, 1910,
and the sadness of its destruction and loss in 1963. When the
doors opened, New Yorkers streamed into one of the greatest
architectural wonders in American history. The arched ceiling
in the waiting room covered over seven acres; the ceiling was
supported by six-story-tall Corinthian columns, and the giant
room was cased in pink travertine marble. The station contained
elegant restaurants, nurseries for children, a gym, library and
bathing areas. Its loss was perhaps the saddest in American
architectural history and caught the public by surprise. Come to
the Cambridge Historical Society and Museum on Wednesday,
August 18 at 7:00 p.m. and see for yourself this amazing story of
Penn Station’s construction and the sadness of its loss. The
Museum opens at 6:00 p.m. for tours prior to the program.

14TH ANNUAL YOUNG ANGLER FISHING
TOURNAMENT. Lake Lauderdale Improvement Association’s
4th annual children’s fishing tournament will take place on Sunday,
August 22 at the Washington County Park Pavilion on beautiful
Lake Lauderdale. The tournament is free and open to all young
anglers age 15 and under. The tournament runs from 8:00-10:30
a.m. and concludes with a free hot dog lunch for all participants.
As always, there will be no fee charged to children entering the
contest. Hot dogs and refreshments will be provided to all young
anglers. Registration opens at 8:00 a.m. and all young anglers are
asked to stop by the pavilion prior to getting their fishing lines
wet. There will be several different age groups and L.L.I.A. is
working hard to insure that all participants receive a small prize.
All young anglers are required to have a parent or legal guardian on
hand with them at all times. In addition to the fishing tournament,
L.L.I.A. is very excited to have local artist Gretchen Burch
returning for face painting. The tournament is strictly catch-and-
release, shoreline fishing only and will be conducted according to

BOOKMAKING WORKSHOP AT NORTH MAIN
GALLERY. Book artist Ed Hutchins will be teaching a book-
making workshop on September 4 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm at the
North Main Gallery in Salem. Hutchins is the artist-in-residence
at North Main Gallery. In this workshop, he will teach students
new skills for assembling unique papers into books that can be
used for sharing poetry, stories, drawings, photographs, recipes

NORTH MAIN GALLERY in Salem will be exhibiting the work
of artists Donna Marie deCreeft, Steven Ginsburg and Horace
Havemeyer III. The show runs through September 25.
deCreeft’s work in this exhibit seeks to capture aspects of the
natural world. “I’ve been steeped in the beauty of the Rensselaer
County hill country since I was a child,” she says.
Steven Ginsburg lives in Alabama and has exhibited throughout
upstate New York. He will be exhibiting paintings and drawings
of figures and landscapes. Horace Havemeyer III studied
watercolors at the Lyme Art Academy in Connecticut. His subjects
reflect his life-long interest in water, boating and landscape as
well as the built environment. Gallery Hours: Wednesday-Friday
