Homework Assignment #1
(due February 7, 2017 in class)

1. The iron core of Fig. 1 has a relative permeability of 3,000. Due to fringing, the effective
area of the air gaps is 4% larger than their physical size. If the coil current is 1.0A:

(a) Draw the related magnetic circuit?

(b) What is the flux in the left, center, and right legs of the core?
(c) What is the flux density in each air gap?

Figure 1: Three-legged core for Exercise 1.

2. A two-legged core is shown in Fig. 2. The magnetization curve for the core material is
provided in Fig. 3. What flux would be produced by currents:

(a) i1 =0.3A and i2 =0.4A; and

(b) i1 =0.6A and i2 =0.8A?

3. Assume that the voltage applied to a load is V = 20830 V, and the current flowing
through the load is I = 515 A.

(a) Calculate the complex power S consumed by this load and its power factor.
(b) Calculate the reactive power consumed or supplied by this load.

4. Three impedances of 2 + j1 are -connected and tied to a three-phase 208-V (line-

to-line) power line. (a) Find I , ILL , P, Q, S, and the power factor of this load. (b)
Repeat the problem if the loads are Y-connected.

5. In the system depicted in Fig. 4, find Ia , Ib , and Ic , if:

(a) Za = j1.0, Zb = j1.1, and Zc = j0.9.

(b) Za = Zb = Zc = j1.0. Hint: use per-phase analysis for this part.

6. Consider the balanced three-phase system of Fig. 5. Find Va0 n , Vb0 n , Vc0 n , and Va0 b0 .

7. A balanced load L1 consisting of pure resistances of 10 per phase is in parallel

with a balanced Y load L2 having phase impedances 8 + j2 . Identical impedances
of 1 + j5 are in each of the three lines connecting the combined loads to a 110-V
(line-to-neutral) three-phase supply.

(a) Draw the per phase equivalent circuit for this system.
(b) Find the power (expressed in watts and power factor) generated by the supply.
(c) Find the power (expressed in watts and power factor) consumed by each load.
