CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter I would like to discuss about background of the research,

statement of the problem, objective of the research, significance of the research,

scope of the research, and operational definition.

1.1 Background of the Research

Teaching English to elementary school students means introducing basic

or simple English. In this very first level to learn foreign language, knowing the

vocabulary itself is important. As stated by Cameron (2001:94) vocabulary has

been seen as a major resource for language use. It means elementary school

students have to learn vocabulary first before become skilled at the other English

skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition, Cameron (2001:72)

stated that building up a useful vocabulary is central to the learning of foreign

language at primary level.

Teaching English in SD N 05 Sukosono Kedung Jepara uses KTSP

curriculum. In this curriculum, English is become one of a local content subject.

The purpose of teaching English in SD N 05 Sukosono Kedung Jepara are:

Introducing basic or simple English for young learners, developing English

competencies of young learners in globalization era, and preparing young learners

to study English in the higher level of education. Even though English is not a

compulsory subject, the students have to pass the minimum score that is 70. They

should have a good English achievement that mostly focused on vocabulary

2

mastery.

Unfortunately, the students have difficulties to master the vocabulary

taught by the teacher. When I did the interview with the English teacher in fifth

grade of SD N 05 Sukosono Kedung Jepara, the students are difficult to

understand and remember the vocabulary that has been taught. They are easy to

get bored when the teacher explains the material. They seem not feeling enjoyable

during the teaching and learning process. Therefore, it makes them very passive in

the classroom. It impacts to their English score. Some students are still getting the

achievement under the minimum score.

Moreover, the way the teacher delivers the material is by writing down

the vocabulary and the meaning in the blackboard related to the topic. After that

the teacher asks the students to remember the meaning of each word. It is seem

not effective to be applied in elementary school. Young learners need some

various activities to making out their boredom so that they will learn enjoyably

and easy to understand the material. To overcome the problems faced by the

teacher and students above, I tried to propose an alternative technique in teaching

English vocabulary to fifth grade students by using Classroom Survey Technique.

There are several ways to motivate the students to learn English.

According to Boylan (2009:1) motivate children to learn English can be through

storytelling, meaningful speaking activities, interactive games, teaching aids,

successful classroom management and teacher-students interaction. In this

research I choose Classroom Survey Technique that include in meaningful

speaking activities. Although it is a speaking activity, it is very helpful to improve

3

the students vocabulary mastery. Since before they want to ask or answer the

questions from the survey, certainly they need to know the vocabulary first.

A classroom survey as it is quoted from British Council

(http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk) is an activity where all the learners need to

ask each other questions to find information, which they then need to analyze and

report back to the class. One of the purposes of doing classroom survey according

to Nunn (2001) is provides practice in free but purposeful interaction both the

teacher and with other students (retrieved from http://iteslj.org). The students are

collecting the data of their classmates by asking some questions. They will go

around the class to gather the information related to the materials that have been

discussed. It will help them to enrich and master the vocabulary that has been

taught.

According to Piagets theory in Cameron (2001:2) children are active

learners. Therefore when the students conduct a classroom survey, they will be

active students not only just sitting in the chair but also move around the class to

collect the data. It fits with young learners characteristic as active learners.

Based on the explanation above, the use of Classroom Survey Technique

hopefully can be used by the English teacher to teach vocabulary effectively so

that the students vocabulary mastery can be improved. That is why I write this

proposal entitled The Use of Classroom Survey Technique to Improve the Fifth

Grade Students Vocabulary Mastery of SD N 05 Sukosono Kedung Jepara in the

Academic Year 2014/2015.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In order to make a systematic approach in solving the problems, the

statements of the problem are:

1. Can the use of Classroom Survey Technique improve the fifth grade students

vocabulary mastery of SD N 05 Sukosono Kedung Jepara in the academic

year 2014/2015?

2. How is the students response in Classroom Survey Technique that is aimed

to improve their vocabulary mastery?

1.3 Objective of the Research

In line with the statement of the problems, the objectives of the research

are:

1. To find out whether the use of Classroom Survey Technique can improve the

Fifth Grade Students vocabulary mastery of SD N 05 Sukosono Kedung

Jepara in the Academic Year 2014/2015;

2. To describe the students response in Classroom Survey Technique that is

aimed to improve their vocabulary mastery.

1.4 Significance of the Research

I expect by doing this research, it will be useful for:

1. The English teachers

This research can give information to the English teacher about the use of

Classroom Survey Technique in teaching vocabulary.

5

2. The Students

This research can give experience for the students to learn English in different

way.

3. The Readers

This research can be the reference for the next research related to the students

vocabulary mastery.

1.5 Scope of the Research

This research is limited only to know how the use of Classroom Survey

Technique can improve the fifth grade students vocabulary mastery of SD N 05

Sukosono Kedung Jepara in the Academic Year 2014/2015 and their response

about it. The material of teaching is based on the syllabus of the fifth grade in the

even semester. The materials for even semester are: Family, Adjective to Describe

Someone, Transportations, Professions, Shapes, and Weather and Seasons.

Furthermore, in this research I take Professions as the material of teaching.

In this research, I take the fifth grade students of SD N 05 Sukosono

Kedung Jepara in the Academic Year 2014/2015 as the research subject.

1.6 Operational Definition

Based on the title of the research, there are some terms that should be

clarified:

1. Classroom Survey Technique is technique of teaching in which the students

conduct a simple survey, ask and answer each other questions related to the

material.
6

2. Vocabulary mastery is the students capability to use the appropriate

vocabulary in the sentence based on the picture.

3. Fifth grade students of SD N 05 Sukosono Kedung Jepara are those students

who are studying in fifth grade of SD N 05 Sukosono Kedung Jepara in the

academic year 2014/2015.
