Importance of Character
Men are of two types. A person with good character is categorized as a UttamaH (exalted)
and one with bad character as adhamaH (fallen). Character is an important measure of
man.
One without noble character cannot become UttamaH, however rich or erudite he may be.
On the other hand, a man with noble character will be deemed UttamaH even without
other attributes such as wealth or scholarship.
BhagavatpadaShankaracharya describes it thus:

In a similar way, two qualities patience and adherence to truth lift men to exalted
status. A man without patience will encounter difficulties. Nobody will like him.
Likewise, speaking untruth may bring in momentary gain, but the difficulties resulting
from it will be unbearable. In contrast, though uttering the truth may entail temporary
difficulties, it will give lasting comfort and peace.
Hence, one who develops patience and adheres to truth will meet with success
everywhere. In the words of Bhagavatpada -

and education.
Dr. Vasan: I was born in Magadi, Bangalore Dist.
My father came from a family of Raja Gurus dating
back to the Vijayanagar Empire. My mother came from
a family of priests. She was my first teacher up to 7
years.She taught me many things including thithi vara
nakshatra etc. She also narrated the stories of Ramayana
and Mahabharatha. Atthe age of 7, I came to Bangalore
along with my parents.My father started teaching me

September 2016
First column gives the English dates and next to it the names of the regional months and dates. The ending moments of Tithi,
Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana are given in the 24 hour clock extending to 30 hours.
Of the Nityayogas, Vishkumbha, Parigha, Vyatipata, Vajra, Vyaghata, Vaidhruthi, Sula, Ganda and Atiganda are generally spurned
for auspicious events and they are marked in red in the Panchanga. Vydhruti pervades from 34640 to 360 and Vyatipata from
21320 to 22640 of the sum of the Nirayana longitudes of the Sun and the Moon. Vydhruti and Vyatipata punyakaala are
observed on the day when the yogas prevail for 1 hours or more, when Sraddha is performed by the astute. These two belong
to the shannavati -96- Sraddhas ordained for a householder. Considering the astronomical implications, the Sayana Vydhruti and
Vyatipata days are also indicated in the Panchanga. The auspicious Amritayoga and Siddhayoga and inauspicious Maranayoga
and Prabalarishtayoga come under Amirtaadiyoga scheme and are different from the Nityayogas.
The Karana is the half of the Tithi. They are mainly classified as Sthira - fixed or immovable and Chara or moveable. The Chara
Karanas are seven in number and the Sthira are only four. The fixed ones are inauspicious. They are Sakuni, Chatushpada,
Naga and Kimsatugna. The seven movable Karanas are in their order, Bava, Baalava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija and Vishti
(or Bhadra.) Among the movable Karanas Vishti or Bhadra is considered to be of dreadful. The forbidden Karanas are marked
in red for easy identification.
We have most of our religious observances pegged on to the Tithis. Pournamipooja Chandradarisana, Sankataharachaturthi
Vrata, Shastivrata, Ekadasi Vrata and Pradosha are specially mentioned in the Panchanga. Pournamipooja is done in the evenings
on days the full Moon is prevalent. Chandradarisana is observed on the evening on the day when the crescent Moon appears
for the first time in the west after the Amavasya. Chaturthi of the Krishnapaksha or Bahula Chaturthi of every month is known
as Sankataharachaturthi. The evenings of Sukla and Krishna Trayodasi days are specially observed as Pradosha Vrata days.

or disease, Saptama or Kalatra-7th or wife (or husband), Ashtama or Ayus-8th or longevity, Navamsa or Pitru-9th or father,
Dasa or Karma -10th or occupation, Labha or 11th-gain; and Vyaya or Moksha-12th or loss.
