Stadium
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 The work of sub-soil exploration for the proposed Multi purpose Sports Hall at
Kottayam for M/s. Kerala State Sports Council was entrusted to M/s. Geo
Foundations & Structures Pvt. Ltd., 6th Floor, Alpha Plaza, K.P.Vallon Road,
1.2 The soil investigation and laboratory studies were carried out in November 2013.
This report summarises the investigations and furnishes suggestions for the
foundations.
2.1 The object of investigation is to ascertain the nature and characteristics of sub-soil
below the ground level at the proposed site. The study would include identification
3.1 Mobilization of boring rigs with all necessary equipments and personnel.
3.2 Boring of Two boreholes with rotary power drilling equipments through sand, silt, &
3.3 Conducting Standard Penetration Tests in bore-holes and collecting the disturbed
3.5 Preparation and submitting detailed report with field and lab results including
4.1 One boring rig with all requisite equipments and accessories were mobilised at
the work site. A team of technical personnel with skilled labours were also
deputed.
4.2 Two bore-holes were bored to a maximum depth of 16.3m below the existing
ground level. The bore-holes were made as per IS: 1892- 1979.
4.3 Disturbed samples were collected at every change of strata or about 1.50
metres depth interval whichever was earlier. The samples so collected were
carefully sealed and numbered with full particulars for identification and sent
to the laboratory.
4.4 Standard Penetration Tests were conducted in the bore- holes at regular
intervals of 1.50m as per IS: 2131-1981. In this test, the standard split spoon
sampler is driven into the ground at the required depth by means of standard
hammer of 63.5 kgs weight, falling from a height of 75cm. Number of blows for
the first 15cm is not taken into consideration because of possible disturbances
The total number of blows for the next 30cm depth of penetration is
All the above laboratory tests were carried out as per relevant Indian
Standard. All the samples were identified and classified as per IS: 1498-1970.
Soil profile for each bore hole is as given below and the location of the
The soil characteristic of BH-1 is depicted in fig. 3. The soil from top to 9.50m is
very soft sandy clayey silt of medium plasticity. Below this a medium to dense
layer of silty sand with presence of gravel is observed upto a depth of 13.5m
followed by rock upto 14.5m. the bore hole is terminated at this depth.
The soil characteristics of BH-2 are depicted in fig.9. As per this the top 4.0m is
loose gravely silty sand of non plastic nature. From 4.0m to 14.0m very soft
clayey silt of high plasticity is observed followed by a layer of loose gravely silty
sand upto 15.7m. Rock is encountered at this depth and the borehole is
terminated at 16.3m.
7.1 From the bore logs and the soil profile it is observed the soil is very soft to soft
clay at top layers. So open square footing may not be a feasible foundation
7.2 RCC bored cast in situ single under reamed compaction piles taken to a
depth of 10.0m below the existing ground level can be provided as the
foundation for the proposed Indoor Stadium. The safe carrying capacities for
different diameters of piles are given below in Table No. 7.1. The load carrying
capacity of bored cast in situ under reamed compaction piles are designed
7.3 Alternatively, for the structures expecting more loads from super structure, Bored
cast in situ RCC piles by DMC method installed as per the relevant clauses of IS
2911 part 1/sec 2 shall be provided as the foundation. These piles have to be
taken upto a depth of about 14m to 16.0m from the existing ground level and
resting on rocky strata. The pile capacities are worked out as per the relevant

9.2 Alternatively, RCC bored cast in situ piles shall also be provided as the
foundation for the proposed structues, if more loads are expected. Piles shall
be taken upto a depth of about 14.0m to 16.0m from the existing ground

9.3 The suggestions given in this report are based on the results of tests on sub-soil
samples collected from the bore-holes. If in actual execution any variation is found,
