Class Attendance and Performance

According to University attendance policy, students are required to attend every class. In
consideration of student's needs and unexpected urgencies, we will not inflict grade penalty for
the first 3 absences. Each additional absence will cost 5% out of 100% semester grade.
Throughout the semester, students may participate in a variety of cultural events to count for 3
(maximum) additional class attendances. Students must arrive in class on time every day. Three
late arrivals or poor attitudes in class count as one absence. Attendance is taken every class hour
starting the second week of classes. You are encouraged to keep a record of your attendance and
may check with your instructors any time during the semester. Bear in mind it is not your
Instructors responsibility to inform you when you have an excessive number or absences
resulting in lower grades or failing the course.
2

Class Performance
Students must come fully prepared for class by going over the materials carefully, doing
exercises, learning vocabulary, reading the text, and being prepared to answer questions or
participate in discussion.

Vocabulary Quizzes
There is a vocabulary quiz for each lesson. Pinyin will not be tested in these quizzes, but you
need to write down English definition.

Composition
Write a composition of 350-600 words on the suggested (or related) topic. For composition
discussion, one or two designated student(s) will post their compositions on Blackboard
Discussion for all to read and discuss in class. Before you come to class, print out the posted
composition, revise errors, and write down at least three questions or comments for each
composition. After discussion, give the copy to the author. Turn in the final draft of your
composition with all the comment copies on the due date.

Language Partner Interviews

Students should meet with assigned language partners of native Chinese speakers. Prepare 10-12
questions (using at least 10 new vocabulary and sentence patterns) to build up your conversation
with your language partner. Ask them to correct your writing, answer the questions, and then
ask you the same (or similar) questions for you to answer. To complete the assignments, students
must turn in A) the questions and responses from you and your partner; B) a written report of the
visit (300 + words) on the due date; C) post on Blackboard the revised final copy of your report
in a week after receiving the report back from your instructor. Detailed instructions for language
partner interviews will be posted on Blackboard in due time.

Mid Term Examination

Open book. Reading a given text, answer questions, and write a composition (300-500 Chinese
characters) in class on a given topic.

Book Report
Students should read at least 10,000 words of authentic texts (ca. 20 book-pages or 5 news
stories, 2-5 pages each) either suggested by the instructor or selected by him/herself with the
permission of the instructor. Then write a reading journal/ synopsis (600-1,000 words)
summarizing the content of your reading (10%), give an oral report with ppt (10-12 minutes,
10%) and write a paper commenting on what you have read (1,000 + words, 10%).

Make-up
There will be no make-ups for quizzes, tests, or assignments. Assignments must be handed in on
time.
3

Extra Credits
Students can earn extra credits (2% maximum) by turning in Chinese essays (300+ characters), 1%
each, on or before the 15th week of the semester.

Syllabus is subject to Change

Our syllabus and contents of class are subject to change. When opportunities rise, we may read
current news stories, news comments, or other supplementary materials.

Academic Dishonesty
Academic dishonesty is not allowed. Cheating in quizzes or tests, plagiarism of composition or
other forms of writing will be reported and the student will receive 0 for his/her grade of the
project in question.

Students with Disabilities

If you have special needs related to a disability that may affect your performance in this course,
please speak with the instructor after class to arrange an appointment as soon as possible to
discuss your needs privately.

Emergency
In the event of a major campus emergency, course requirements, deadlines and grading
percentages are subject to changes that may be necessitated by a revised semester calendar or
other circumstances. Information on those changes will be sent to you from the Chinese
Language Program.

EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION PROCEDURES are based on a simple concept if you

hear a fire alarm inside, proceed outside. If you hear a siren outside, proceed inside.

Indoor Fire Alarms mean to stop class or research and immediately evacuate the building.
Proceed to your Emergency Assembly Area away from building doors. Remain outside until
police, fire, or other emergency response personnel provide additional guidance or tell you it is
safe to leave.

All Hazards Outdoor Emergency Warning Sirens mean to immediately seek shelter
(Shelter in Place) in a safe location within the closest building. Shelter in place means seeking
immediate shelter inside a building or University residence. This course of action may need to be
taken during a tornado, a civil disturbance including a shooting or release of hazardous materials
in the outside air. Once safely inside, find out more details about the emergency*. Remain in
place until police, fire, or other emergency response personnel provide additional guidance or
tell you it is safe to leave.

For fire alarms or anything else that requires a building evacuation, gather on Memorial Mall to
the south of the building. If its from a class, try to account that everyone is out. In case of rain
etc. go to the lobby of Stuart Center (just inside the main doors on the west side of the building).
4

For tornados, go to the ground floor hallway and stay away from windows. For shelter in place
such as a shooting incident you should stay in your classroom and lock and/or barricade the door,
turn off lights, and if applicable cover the observation window.
