DURING THE QUAKE

As the National Disaster Preparedness program went on, the whole community of Malaban
Elementary School readied for the implementation for the 2 nd quarter of Simultaneous National
Earthquake Drill (SNED), along with this were the several reminders of the School Disaster Risk
Response (SDRR) Team about the safety precautions that the teaching, non- teaching personnel and
the students should observe before, during and after an earthquake. At around 1:30 PM, Ms. Linda
Cachero, head of the SDRR Team notified the assigned teams to be at their stations before the drill,
advised the teachers to have their students prepare their rain gears since gloomy skies and drizzly
rainfall started to be visible within the area. Aside from the school personnel, the Barangay Malaban
Response Unit Team assured that every exit point and evacuation area were manned to secure
protection of the students and clarity of communication from one statison to another.
At around 2:05 PM, the drill started with an emergency bell alarmed from the first floor of the
PPP building along with the megaphone sirens sounded around the school by the selected boy
scouts of the school, this immediately gave the hint for the teachers to have their students do the
basic and essential moves of Duck-Cover-Hold under their armed and desked chairs. After the first
signal, the second alarm was signaled to the whole school community and this time, pupils and
teacher alike started to calmly and alertly went out of their respective classroom and guided their
students to the proper and safe way to the exit points around the school. The kindergarten students
made their way out through the small gate that is trajectory to their building; they were assisted by the
Barangay Response Team (BRT) to their evacuation site in the Malayan area, the primary students
from Grade Levels I-III were intact together to assure that nobody gets lost in the direction nor would
they get mixed with other groups but somehow the drizzly weather and volume of pupils overwhelmed
the students that they got to be away from their group and in the end, join other groups or go back to
the school area by themselves while mostly were approached by the BRT and accompanied back to
their groups, the intermediate pupils from Grades IV- VI moved their way to their evacuation site
around the Saint Rose Subdivision area however, they had a hard time hovering their way to the site
due to the traffic flow of the different vehicles present going to and fro around the vicinity but were
then solved with the help of the BRT as they headed the unclogging of the traffic flow for the students
to pass through; another challenge that they encountered was the drainage system repair at the
corner of the subdivision that has covered almost 75% of the road with mud, gravel and sand and
steel bars that resulted for the students to be more careful as they cross the work area.
Meanwhile, the selected school personnel who were trained as Red Cross representatives,
conducted the first aid care to the students who acted as those who were damaged by the quake-
either by fire explosion, collision and other disaster- related accidents to demonstrate how victims
should be treated after they have been affected by the incidents.
After several minutes, the students who came from their respective evacuation areas started to
go back to their classroom with the guidance and supervision of their advisers and BRT especially to
those students who drifted away from their original group. As the students come inside the school
area, Kinder- Grade IV pupils were asked to directly go back to their rooms for them to cool down and
eventually watch a video presentation about the disasters that could strike their areas and how they
could survive it. The Grade V and VI students on the other hand, were ordered to stay in the covered
court for the proceeding program which encompassed the putting out of fire using the fire extinguisher
and water hose from the firefighters truck of the BRT; Ms. Linda Cachero headed the introduction of
the demonstrator from Malaban Firefighters Unit which was then re-enacted by Mrs. Venus Bongao,
Mr. Padim Alatiit and several other pupils present at the area. When the first phase of the program
was done, the Grade VI pupils went back to their classrooms while the Grade V students stayed for
the lecture that was led by Mrs. Anabelle Angeles; the lecture centered about the Safety Precaution
Before, During and After an Earthquake. When the lecture was done, Mrs. Angeles asked some
questions about the tips, information and knowledge that she has shared with the students and has
later on dismissed the students back to their classrooms.
The whole earthquake program was spearheaded by Ms. Linda Cachero, School Disaster Risk
Reduction Management Head with her council and was hosted by Ms. Elaine Quidato.
