DAISY

1.Throughout the novel Daisy is very laid back, she goes with the flow and doesn't make any
commotion or uproar when certain things dont go her way. Although daisy knows that Tom is
cheating on her Daisy shys away from the issue and doesnt want to make a fuss. This quote
shows that daisy wants her daughter too, to grow up and not make a fuss when bad is being
done to her. She told me it was a girl, and so I turned my head away and wept. 'All right,' I
said, 'I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a foolthat's the best thing a girl can be in this
world, a beautiful little fool. Daisy is implying that the best thing her daughter can do is to be
dumb enough not to realize how awful her life is. She doesnt want her daughter to be strong
and be able to stick up for herself, she wants he to be dumb and foolish so she won't get hurt,
because this is all a girl can be in 1920s American society (She may be right?).

2. Daisy is in a Flashback and that was of the night Gatsby and Daisy meet. In the flashback she
can be seen wearing all white, and all over Gatsby and in love as she knows everything will be
perfect as he's from a wealthy family.
Later on in the book in chapter 7 Daisy finds out that Gatsbys is New Money and makes his
money illegally when Tom calls him out for what his Drug stores really were. After back and
forth arguing about whether that was true or not Gatsby looks at Daisy and began to talk
excitedly to daisy, denying everything, defending his name against accusations that had not
been made. But with every word she was drawing further and further away
We see that she's shallow, she doesnt want to be with Gatsby anymore as hes New Money.
This shows the failure of The American Dream during this time as Gatsby cant reach Daisy, as
he is seen as unequal as he is not born into money, therefore Daisy does not want to be with
him.

4. "They're such beautiful shirts," she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds. "It makes me
sad because I've never seen such such beautiful shirts before."
-This quote shows how Daisy is in love with money and the money that Gatsby has, she is sad
because Gatsby is now rich and she wishes that she had waited for him, not for love but for
money.

'All right,' I said, 'I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool that's the best thing a girl can be
in this world, a beautiful little fool.'
-This shows how Daisy wishes that she could be a fool, she wishes that she was unaware of the
fact that her husband is having an affair. She is with Tom for his money and wishes that she
could be loved.

"Take 'em down-stairs and give 'em back to whoever they belong to. Tell 'em all Daisy's change'
her mine. Say: 'Daisy's change' her mine!'"
-This shows how for a moment Daisy changed her mind about marrying Tom but in the long run
she still married him for his money and his money is all that matters, not love.
5. People treat Daisy in a respectful manner because she is in the upper class and she is old
money. This makes her very respectable and people look up to her, she is also married to a very
rich man so she is respected highly. But this is different from how she acts towards other
people, she looks down on others because she is very rich and of a high class, she is relatively
kind towards others but she also looks down upon them, especially Gatsby when she realises
that he is not born into money.

6. This teaches us that in 1920s American society the rich were highly respected and the poor
were looked down upon. The more money that one had, the more respected they were, and
the more wanted they were, dependant on their money. She also shows the theme of
Appearance verse reality as she appears innocent and nice but lets Gatsby take the blame for
her killing someone and then doesnt even go to Gatsbys funeral, nor have a relationship with
her daughter.

7. The author has included this character in the novel because it shows the readers the want for
power and money in 1920s America. Gatsby longs for Daisy but in reality he longs for the
money and social status that she represents, Gatsby is constantly reaching for the validation
that he can reach Daisys level of social superiority.

8. The symbol that is associated with Daisy is the colour white, the colour white represents
happiness, purity and innocence. Daisy often wears the colour white, white is worn to cover up
the sadness and darkness that she really feels and represents. The white is used to help her
cover up the truth about herself. That she is actually a shallow, timid woman that doesnt stand
up for herself or take responsibility for her actions.

9. This character reminds me today of people who are very high class in America. Today there
are still people who are rich but also have a darker side to them. Rich people are usually held in
high respect but they can also be manipulative. This kind of behavior can be seen in famous
people or politicians, they have a lot of money and are highly respected but they can also cause
a lot of problems.
