Pastors Corner
Those who are old enough to remember will recall the disturbing events and images of
twelve years ago when New Orleans, Mississippi, and Alabama were devastated by
Hurricane Katrina. Many in our congregation and this area traveled south in the years after
to help in the recovery. Before I came to ESUMC, I made two trips to that area, in 2007 and
2009, to help rebuild. Those were deeply moving and meaningful trips for me, and Im sure
well make plans again to travel to the Houston area for a similar effort in response to the
devastation of Hurricane Harvey.
Already, experts are saying that Harvey will be the most expensive storm our country has ever experienced,
even larger than the damage caused by Katrina. As much as the federal and state governments can do, as
much as the American Red Cross and other human relief organizations can do, we realize that the answer to
full recovery falls to volunteers from faith-based organizations. Long after other organizations and governments
have left behind the devastation of storms such as Katrina and Sandy, the church has still been there. Even
after twelve years, there are still church volunteer groups venturing to New Orleans to complete Katrina
recovery. Several years ago, I heard that the final two church groups still active in New Orleans were the
United Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church. Society has a very short memory, and very quickly
people turn their attention to other things after disasters, but I believe God has given the church a long memory
and it remembers those who are still in distress around the world.
We turn our thoughts and prayers now to those in eastern Texas; in Houston, Beaumont, Port Arthur, and
other communities devastated by Harvey. What can we do in the short term?

Pray, of course! Pray for the families who have lost loved ones, those who have lost all or most every
possession theyve owned, federal and state leaders who are already making important decisions about aid,

first responders who have been spending long hours on the water
making rescues, and those preparing to go into devastated
neighborhoods to begin the work of demolition and rebuilding. Some in
our own congregation have family in the Houston area, so there are
people we can pray for by name.
The Stephen Ministry Leadership Team is
