Exercise 3: Filling of Drink Bottles

Objective:

1. To be able to design indirect cylinder actuation.

2. To familiarize yourself with the design and functions with
stepper module.
3. To be able to design the basic continuous cycle stepper
control system.
4. To be able to install one-way flow control valves dependent on
given parameters.

Problem:

A drinks producer requires bottles to be filled automatically.

During the filling operation, the bottles are to be pressed against the
extended piston rod of the separating cylinder by a continuously running
conveyor. The storage container is to close the container opening is the
retracted state.

Parameters:

The flow control of the separating cylinder is to be set such that

only the filled bottle is release and a new, empty drinks bottle is
positioned underneath the filling valve.
Project Task:

1.Process the introductory exercises for stepper module.

2.Complete the pneumatic circuit diagram.
3.Carry out the assembly.
4.Check the assembled circuit.
5.Describe the mode of operation of the circuit.
6.Compile the equipment list.

Materials:

Laptop Ethernet cable

2- double acting pneumatic cylinder Air compressor
2- 5/2 way double solenoid valve Connectors
2- magnetic proximity sensor Air tubes
Stepper Module

Procedure:

First we created a program using CodeSys software. We fist did a

simulation before proceeding to using the PLC module for actual
experiment. The setup for our filling process is that one of the cylinders
is the separator and the other cylinder is the filling valve.
1. Continuous operation is to be started by pressing the START
button OS6. The sequence is to stop at the end of the cycle by
pressing the STOP at CYCLE END button OS5.
2. In MANUAL mode, the cylinders and sequencer are to be settled
by pressing the RESET button OS4.
3. The retracting movements of the cylinders are to be exhaust air
restricted

Discussions:

The operation starts with the push button that is connected with %IX2.0
input which will provide the input voltage to the system. The 2nd cylinder will
now extend which means that a bottle is now ready to be filled thus triggering the
sensor %IX2.1 which is connected to cylinder to signal the cylinder 1 to proceed
with the filling process but still holding the cylinder 2 on its extended state. The
cylinder 1 will now extend signaling the filling process and triggering sensor 2
which will then provide a 3 second delay (time it takes to fill the bottle) and then
back to its retracted state. After that, the cylinder 2 retracts and a 1 second delay
(time it takes for a new bottle to position of filling) the cylinder now extends
signaling a complete run of the filling process. The purpose of the bypass button
which is %IX2.6 is to let the bottle which is filled already to pass through. The
button acts as a sensor because whenever it is triggered the cylinders 1 and 2
retracts to stop the filling process at the same time putting new bottle in position
to filling.

Here is the ladder diagram to carry out the filling process.

Conclusion

In this activity we learned how to design and implement the filling

process of drinking bottles by the use of the software and PLC module
and successfully incorporate the given parameters.
