First Christian Church to celebrate 150 years
I
n 1867 Camp Henderson was a small
settlement on the banks of Buffalo
Creek. In April of that year it was
named Cleburne and designated the
county seat. In the same year, the
Christian Church was organized by Elder
B.F. Hall and a handful of faithful believ-
ers.
The first meetings were held in mem-
bers homes and monthly in the Court
House. The silver communion service in
the glass cabinet in our foyer was donat-
ed to the church by Major and Mrs. E.M.
Heath and was used for weekly commu-
nion during that period.
In February 1880 land was purchased
and the First Christian Church was built
on West Wardville Street at a cost of
$2,000. A belfry was constructed in
front of the church and bell was rung on
Sundays for the call to worship. That
same bell hangs on the rock sign in front
of the current church. It has been a part
pf all four churches.
By 1890 the membership had grown
to over 100, with Sunday school atten-
dance of 60 to 70 members. The minis-
ter was Elder H.H. Whitlock and the
Sunday School Superintendent was
Elder C.L. Heath.
1902 and 1903 were exciting years for
the First Christian Church of Cleburne.
A new church building was built on the
lot West of the existing church and
dedicated. The new church hosted a
thanksgiving service for all the churches
in Cleburne. In December of 1903 the

During this decade, the congregation
once again began to consider building a
new and more up to date church facility.
The first church built in 1880 on West
Wardville Street was replaced by a sec-
ond structure built on an adjacent lot.
Some parts of the first church were used
in constructing the second church. One
distinct difference was the beautiful
stained glass windows in the second
church.
The fourth and current church at 200
South Nolan River Road was finished in
May of 1986, and on Sunday, Mothers

service was held in the new sanctuary.

was left to the church by long term

Gooding. Also included were trees that
have now grown to shade the play-
ground
In 2005 Sunday Service attendance
had drastically declined, and a small
group of church leaders in search of
some guidance attended a Leadership
meeting at Granbury First Christian
Church. While the lessons were infor-
mative the truly inspiring event occurred
when they saw a small prayer garden on
the grounds.
The group decided it needed a proj-
ect to work on together and the idea of
a prayer garden project was born.
Memorial donations in memory of Faye
Meyer and Bob Middleton along with
the groups labor the project was com-
pleted. Some believe that the church
growth that occurred afterword was the
results of the congregational project.
We exist to Love All, Serve All, and
Pray for All. We are Kingdom Builders.
Happy Birthday Cleburne, its your
celebration also.

Missing Man Table
O
nce again, the Cleburne Chamber of Commerce
is happy and proud to show off our sincerest
appreciation and support to all of our military
men and women service members and veterans.
We are about to display our very own Missing Man
Table in the lobby of the chamber at 1511 W. Henderson
St.
The Missing Man Table is viewed in a variety of
public venues and can be an extremely emotional and
personal experience. Its incorporation into military and
civilian events is for specific purposes.
These purposes, among others, do include remem-
bering lost or fallen comrades, helping to educate young
adults and children of the sacrifices many of our service
members have made, and helping individuals make con- Courtesy photo

The primary purpose of this display is not solely in
support of our Military Service Members, but also to
honor and respect those families who have either had a
relative lost in combat, or those who remain Missing in

were held captive as Prisoners of War POWs hence
the Missing Man Table, also known as the Missing

All are encouraged to drop by the chamber to witness
and show respect for our military heroes. Any of our
chamber member businesses are welcome to arrange for
the display to be set up in their own businesses for a
