Instructions to the students: The following problems should be solved as home assignment within
a week of distribution. The respective tutorial hour instructor will assign any one problem as a
closed book class test in the following tutorial hour

1. (a) The work function for metallic Rubedium is 2.09 eV. Calculate the kinetic energy
and the speed of the electrons ejected by the light of wavelength 195 nm. [8M]

7. (a) Treat a rotating HI molecule as a stationary I atom around which an H atom circulates
in a plane at a distance of 161 pm. Calculate (i) the moment of inertia of the molecule (ii)
the greatest wavelength of the radiation that can excite the molecule into rotation. [8M]
(b) Which of the following terms cannot be obtained from the electronic configuration
