This lesson covers NMM configuration and backup features of Microsoft SharePoint farm.
Module: NMM Setup and Configuration for Microsoft SharePoint
When registering the SharePoint 2010 Service Writer, ensure that this command is
executed on each and every SharePoint web front-end servers.
During a backup, we need to gather data required for SharePoint Disaster Recovery that is
not provided by VSS. nsrsnap_vss_save triggers PowerShell commands to collect data.
Because the command is run as the system account on SharePoint servers, those accounts
need certain permissions on all SQL servers in order to allow this.
To configure this:
1. Run the SharePoint Management shell on one of the farm servers, while logged in as a
SharePoint Farm Administrator. For each server in the farm, run the following
command:
Add-SPShellAdmin -UserName "<DOMAIN>\<HOSTNAME>$
2. Then, on each SQL Server being used by the farm, go to SQL Server Management
Studio, and edit the Server Roles for the newly added logins.
3. They should have the following permissions: dbcreator, public, and sysadmin.

NMM 8.2 now supports backup and recovery of only Microsoft applications. The backup and
recovery of SYSTEM COMPONENTS and file system can now be performed by using the
NetWorker client without installing NMM.
For SharePoint Web Front End server, application server, search server specify
APPLICATIONS:\Microsoft Office SharePoint Services as Save set value.

For SharePoint Server backup, the Backup command attribute must be set as
nsrsnap_vss_save.

In the Application information attribute, specify --

NMM configuration wizard can be used to create NetWorker Snapshot Policy.

Granular-Level Recovery (GLR) for SharePoint 2010 is supported by NMM 8.2 with third-
party software, such as Kroll Ontrack PowerControls.
1. Launch NetWorker User for Microsoft from SharePoint WFE server.
2. Select SharePoint and SQL Server Recover Session from Recover.
3. In the navigation tree, expand the APPLICATIONS folder and select the web
application that contains the item that need to be recovered.
4. From SharePoint and SQL Server Recover Session toolbar, select Recover.
Do not click Continue. BRS_Web_Application_Database needs to be recovered on SP-SQL
first.
5. Launch NetWorker User for Microsoft from SQL server.
6. In the navigation tree, expand the APPLICATIONS and then SqlServerWriter

folder, locate and mark the dependent SQL content database.
7. From SharePoint and SQL Server Recover Session toolbar, select Recover.
SQL database is recovered successfully.
8. Return to SharePoint WFE server and select Continue to complete SharePoint
recovery operation.
SharePoint content database is recovered successfully.

NMM 8.2 does not provide a user interface for SharePoint GLR process. Kroll Ontrack
PowerControls provides the user interface for SharePoint GLR process.
A SharePoint Granular Level Recovery tab has been added to the Recover Options in the
SharePoint and SQL Server Recover Session.
A standalone Windows host, not participating the SharePoint farm, is recommended for
SharePoint GLR operation. This allow NMM user to install, un-install and later upgrade
the GLR feature without taking SharePoint production servers offline via reboot.
1. Launch NetWorker User for Microsoft from the SharePoint GLR host.
2. Add proper SQL server as a Viewable Client.
3. Select SQL server from Client.
4. Browse and highlight desired content database. Right-click the content database and
select Mount SharePoint Backup for Granular Level Recovery option.
5. Launch Ontrack PowerControls for SharePoint from the SharePoint GLR host.
6. Specify the location where the backup of SQL database and transaction log files are
virtually mounted.
7. Specify SharePoint GLR restore destination and authentication information.
8. Navigate SharePoint objects from both the Sources pane and Targets pane.
9. In the Sources pane, highlight SharePoint objects that need to be recovered, then right-
click and select Copy.
10. In the Targets pane, highlight proper destination folder, then right-click and select
Paste.
