Physiology

Physiology is the study of how molecules, cells and organs interact to form a
whole being.

What are the processes that allow our bodies to function normally?

How do the physiological processes in our body compensate in illness?

How do defects in physiology contribute to the development of illness?

The basic physiological processes are taught in the context of application to

clinical practice.

Lectures and tutorials integrated with other disciplines (JC1, JC2, JC3).
Revisited with greater emphasis on clinical scenarios in IC.
Physiology Topics in Semester 1
Fundamentals 1
How does the autonomic nervous system integrate the different systems in our
body?
How is muscle cell and neurone excitation propagated through nerve and
muscle tissue?

Cardiovascular, respiratory and upper limb

How does the cardiovascular system control blood pressure?

What physiological processes occur in the heart

to regulate the heart beat?

What happens in arrhythmia and heart failure?

How is efficient gaseous exchange achieved in

the lungs?

How does the circulatory system regulate oxygen

and carbon dioxide concentration in the tissues?

CVR-UL Module Learning Outcomes
On completion of this Module, students will have a detailed
understanding of:

The structure and function of the cardiovascular system

The structure and function of the respiratory system

The pathophysiology of diseases of the cardiovascular and

respiratory systems

Basic concepts for treatment of diseases of the cardiovascular

and respiratory systems

The structure of the thorax, breast and upper limb

Cardiovascular, Respiratory & Upper Limb Module
