8. Tell me about Fam Tour, Sustainable tourism, eco-tourism, dark-tourism, and incentive tour.

1) (Fam Tour)

Fam tour is a short name of familiarization tour. It is a tour that is designed for usually travel agents
and journalists. Through the Fam tour, new travel programs and products are expected to be
promoted when the guests go back to their workplaces. For example, I saw a news article that
mentioned how the Korean government invited Chinese journalists to Jeju island to promote the
island to tourists. Before selling the tour products, the agents or government can try out in
advanced, and get feedback from the guests before releasing the final product.

2. (Sustainable tourism)

Sustainable tourism is about visiting tourist spots which do not negatively affect the environment,
economy, and society. It ensures the tourists meaningful experience, raising their awareness to
promote sustainable tourism. It also encourages people to minimize the impact on the environment
and local culture. For sustainability, we need to keep a balance between development and
environmental issues. Plus, local people need to have the opportunity to be part of tourism for the
social equality that brings financial benefits to the residents. As this has become realized, the
concepts of green tourism, eco-tourism, and fair tourism have emerged.

3) (Eco tourism)

Eco-tourism is participating in environmentally responsible tours on which travelers can realize the
importance of the environment. Tourism can possibly damage nature, but eco-tourism aims to
protect it as much as possible and promote conservation. It also tries to minimize the negative effect
that tourism can cause to the environment. For example, the number of daily visitors who can access
Huwon of Changeokgung is restricted to protect the palace. At the peak of Jirisan, NogoDan, you are
not allowed to eat anything for environmental reasons. Also, the Jeju Olle Trail and the Changnyeong
Upo Wetlands are also great examples of eco-tourism.

4) (Dark Tourism)

The dark in dark tourism means a dark chapter of history. It is visiting a place where something
terrible once happened. This kind of tourism is considered an important and meaningful concept as
we can learn a wide range of lessons from reflecting upon past disasters.

In Seoul, there is the War Memorial in Youngsan city. We can see how tragic the Korean War was
from each exhibition and sculpture. One more place I can recommend is Seodaemun Prison History
Hall near Independence gate in Seoul. It was a prison built and used during the Japanese occupation.
Many Koreans who resisted against the Japanese were arrested, tortured, and killed here. This
prison shows how Koreans fought through a dreadful chapter of history with the hope of
Independence.
5) (Incentive tourism)

Incentive tours are provided by a company for their employees as an incentive to help them engage
with their work efficiently and successfully.

A company provides incentive tours to excellent employees in the hope that their colleagues will
work better after they come back. Employees can also get the chance to travel and bond with their
co-workers. Incentive tours bring a large amount of profits to the tourism industry as most
companies offer premium tour packages to reward their best employees.

One example of an incentive tour to Korea is that of a Chinese company which sent their employees
to Korea to have a giant chicken and beer party on Wolmi Island last year. Around five thousand
Chinese joined this tour and enjoyed the combination of chicken and beer Koreans call Chi Maek. Chi
Maek is very popular both in Korea and abroad.
