APPLICATION PROBLEMS

9. Product Design

A tile manufacturing company plans to produce enamel tiles with the design and color
scheme shown in figure below, Will more black or white enamel be needed ?

Ans: The black area is 5/12 and the white area is 7/12. So, need more white enamel

10. Automotive Engineering

The work cycle, or Otto cycle, of an internal combustion engine may be approximated
by the pressure-volume (or pV) diagram shown in figure below. The area of the
region between the curves is proportional to the work done by the engine during one
cycle. The curves represent adiabatic, or zero, heat input/output processes, where

pV k, where k is a constant and 1.33 for gasoline vapor. Find the work
done by the cycle shown in figure below.

11. Real Estate Evaluation

A square cabin with a plot of land adjacent to a lake is shown in the figure below. If a
coordinate system is set up as indicated, with distances given in yards, the lakefront

boundary of the property is part of the curve y 10 e

0.04 x
. Assuming that the cabin

costs RM2000 per square yard and the land in the plot outside the cabin (the shaded
region in the figure 1) costs RM800 per square yard, what is the total cost of this
vacation property ?

Ans: RM241,223.76

12. Volume of a Cone

13. Size of a Tumor

A tumor has approximately the same shape as the solid formed by rotating the region
under the curve y x 3 x about the x axis, where x and y are measured in
centimeters. Use integration to estimate the volume of the tumor.
