RDC COMPETITION HANDBOOK/CONTRACT 2017/2018
FOR MORE THAN TWO DECADES our school has been a leader in dance education. We believe that our success
comes as a result of providing solid training and quality service, along with an underlying belief in the strength of
our organization. We have created this handbook/contract to offer our dancers and their parents a clear
understanding of their commitments and responsibility to the Competition Team and the school.

The following handbook/contract has been set up to make clear, to the Team Member and parents, the goals and
expectations of the Director and Teachers.
Please read this handbook/contract CAREFULLY. RDC has adapted a zero tolerance policy regarding certain
sections of the Student Code of Conduct Contract. Violations of these sections, which are clearly marked by the
text Zero Tolerance, while at RDC or participating in RDC events are grounds for immediate dismissal from the
team with no refunds. All other violations of the Code will be reviewed by the RDC team Director and Teachers,
and my result in the Student being placed on probation.
Dates and/or expenses listed in this contract are subject to change. Updates will be posted on our website or
emailed.

FOR OUR DANCERS

Congratulations! You have been accepted into Relev Dance Centres Competition Team. The first step to
becoming a successful dancer is making a solid commitment to your classes, rehearsals, performances, and the
team. If interested in cheerleading, soccer, lacrosse, any extracurricular activity that could INTERFERE with the
team, please rethink about joining and making the commitment.

Respect
Competition team members are to be considered role models of the studio, and will, therefore, be held to a
higher standard of behavior, participation, and dedication. We expect all team members to be supportive of
each other, to exercise extremely good sportsmanship in class and at all events and to be respectful of the rules,
other dancers, judges, etc.
Respect for the teachers and choreographers you work with are essential. Listen to each correction given,
whether its directed to you or another dancer. A correction is an honor; it shows you how much a teacher cares
about your progress as a dancer. Always say thank you when a teacher or choreographer offers you constructive
criticism. Nothing can stop those students who apply themselves in every class and appreciate their teachers
knowledge and experience. Always close the class with applause for yourself, your team and your instructor. This
is dance class etiquette.
1. Students must treat all faculty, administrators, staff, themselves, and fellow students with respect and
honesty at all times. Zero Tolerance
2. Students must not harass others verbally or physically including rolling of the eyes making comments under
their breath, post negative comments on Twitter, facebook, instagram any source of social media and also
includes phony social media accounts. Zero Tolerance
o Students will NEVER criticize another student or studio. Zero Tolerance
o Students will HAVE PROPER MANNERS WHEN AT COMPETITION AND ANY TIME REPRESENTING RELEV
DANCE CENTRE. (THIS INCLUDES AWARD CEREMONIES, thanking the person for the award no matter
the score).
o Students will NEVER argue with a teacher or judge or question their decision

Classroom Etiquette
Students must take pride in their studio and dressing rooms at competitions and recitals. The worst way to show
respect is by leaving piles of trash for someone else to pick up.
Strong technique is a key ingredient and class is where you develop that technique. Come to each class
prepared to learn and without personal distractions. Class time is your chance to focus on yourself, so try to leave
your concerns or worries at the studio door. True progress is made when you look at each class, rehearsal, or
performance as an opportunity to become better at what you love to do. Dance full out, stretch a little further,
become more aware of your technique, and make the most of every class.
Page | 3
All competition classes are dedicated to technique and choreography or cleaning the choreography. A
dancer who misses a class holds back the progress of the entire group. Repeating the choreography from a
previous session for those who were absent takes up valuable class time, which could result in a performance that
is not up to par. When we clean choreography, we may also change it. Dancers who miss a cleaning session may
not be properly prepared for the upcoming performance and could end up letting themselves, their team, or the
dance studio down. If you are absent, there is a chance that you will be choreographed out of that section.
1. Students are to work hard, learn, perform, and enjoy.
2. Students cannot have visitors, including family and friends in class or rehearsals.
3. Students are not to bring cell phones into the classroom. Zero Tolerance

Attendance
Ballet & Ballet Tech absences will be posted in the lobby and updated monthly.
1. Lateness: Students must attend and be on time (10 minutes late students will NOT be allowed in class and
will count as an absence) for all scheduled classes.

competition for the applicable class.

3. Team class summer absences: Students agree to participate in summer classes (6 weeks) NO more than
one (1) absence from each summer class. However, absences from competition class may be made-up.

consequences. Zero Tolerance
Those with over the maximum absences without make up will start with a deficit.
5. Production Rehearsal: Production rehearsals run for approximately 5 months). Dancers are allowed 4
absences from production and selects. Once the 5th absence occurs, dancer will not be able to perform
the production number for competition. If dancer continues to come to rehearsals, they may perform with

Competition Week:
o Week of competition: All dance team members are required to participate in all dance classes the
week prior to the 1st competition.
Unacceptable excuses for missing class, rehearsals, and performances are sports activities, birthday parties,
school dances, or just forgetting (PARENT/GUARDIAN INCLUDED).

Competition
Performances and competitions are your opportunity to show the world the results of your dedication and hard
work. To make the most of this opportunity:
1. Students must arrive to the competition venue two (2) hours ahead of their call time and remain till after
their awards session.
2. Be sure you are properly warmed up.
3. Present yourself in a professional manner, with costumes pressed, shoes cleaned, and all accessories
accounted for.
4. Go out there and show the audience how much you love to dance!
5. Students are required to maintain 100 points (60 for new company and acro only team, 80 for 2nd year
minis) to remain on the team for the following year (refer to handbook/contract for points descriptions).
6. STUDENT CHOREOGRAPHY: This is open to graduating seniors only and must be approved by Miss June and
the teachers.

Items of Importance:
1. Team members are not allowed to take classes from any other studio that does competition.
2. Any outside workshops must be approved by Miss June.
3. Team members are not allowed to audition for another studio that does competition.
4. Cell phones. If brought to class, must be turned off.
5. Not having proper shoes or required dress code.
6. Arriving to class more than 10 minutes late.
True progress is made when you look at each class, rehearsal, or performance as an opportunity to
become better at what you love to do.

FOR OUR PARENTS:

We believe childrens success depends on the support of their parents or guardians. Because your commitment to
the process makes an enormous difference, we encourage you to be a part of your childs dance education.
Our program relies on a positive atmosphere for our faculty, competition participants, and their parents; it
promotes a positive learning experience for all involved. Showing respect for the other parents, along with the
students and faculty, makes an important impression on the children. You are a role model for your child in how to
interact with others in a professional setting. Cooperation between all parents is expected.

Parents and teachers may look at a childs learning from different perspectives. However, they share a common
goal: to assure that every child receives the best possible training, both physically and mentally. Mutual respect
between our faculty and our dancers parents provides the children with the ultimate care and education.

Page | 5
The spirit of teamwork and the lesson of dedication are a big part of our schools educational process. Your
childs presence in classes, rehearsals, and performances is imperative.

As a parent, the financial support of your student is important, but of equal, perhaps even greater value is your
emotional support. Encourage your child to be the best that he or she can be without regard to what others may
achieve. Dance is an individual art form; each child needs to achieve at a pace thats comfortable for him or her.
Its important to encourage the children to focus on themselves, give their all, and be satisfied with their own
accomplishments. No two students will progress at the same rate, even if they experience the exact same
training.

Dance education encompasses far more than technique or the steps your children will learn. We believe the
discipline of dance training gives young people a better understanding of commitment by offering them the
chance to learn, experience the spirit of teamwork, and understand what hard work can accomplish. Our goal is
to educate the minds, bodies, and souls of our students, to teach them the skills needed for a successful life,
whether or not they stay involved in dance.
1. Parents pledge that they will participate in the childs dance activities in accordance with the following:
a. Promote teamwork and sportsmanship for ALL students and spectators in a positive manner.
b. Will not question the judgment of any faculty member or choreographer
c. Will support the childs class, teachers, and choreographers and resolve to allow the teachers to
manage their dancers and choreography as they feel best benefits the entire class
2. Parents will be a role model for their child as well as the other dancers. Conduct at the studio,
performances and other studio events must be above reproach, and represent the highest standards of
morality, teamwork and sportsmanship. Therefore Parents will
a. Exhibit exemplary behavior at the studio and at performances
b. Will at all times control emotions and will be considerate of all dancers and parents collective
emotions
3. Will not make disparaging remarks of any type with regard to teachers, choreographers, choreography
placement, costumes, other parents, other schools other students or publicly criticize them in the studio or
at any event
4. Parents recognize the importance of performing arts in the lives of young people
5. Parents will encourage their child to do the best of their ability at all times.
6. Parents will not make a judgment on their childs or any other childs performance and always support
them and the team.
7. Parents will never make a negative comment concerning other parents or their children.
8. Parents will always applaud for ALL dancers
9. Parents will teach our children proper manners at all times especially when representing Releve Dance
Centre.
10. Photography and videography is strictly prohibited inside the auditorium at all conventions and
competitions. Occasionally, it is allowed during award ceremonies, and is almost always allowed outside of
the auditorium. If a parent or extended family member is caught taking photos or videos while our routines
are on stage, regardless of whether the child is one of our students or not, the entire studio could be
disqualified from the competition, and all titles, trophies, awards and entry fees would be forfeited to the
competition.
11. Parents will be PROMPT when dropping off or picking up your child from a rehearsal, parade, competition,
or performance. The teachers cannot be responsible for your child after an event.
12. Parents will help their child with their commitments listed above (UNFORTUNATELY THE DANCER WILL BE
PENALIZED) and accept responsibility in failure to do so.
13. Parents will be RESPONSIBLE for ALL fees incurred for their child in dance and make payments in a timely
fashion.
14. Parents to discuss PROBLEMS OR CONCERNS IN PRIVATE WITH THE TEACHER OR DIRECTOR, NOT ANOTHER
PARENT.
15. One parent is required to work recital and corresponding dress rehearsal.

About Competitions:
1. Must be at venue 2 hours before their first dance and may leave after their awards ceremony.

Page | 6
2. Cash Scholarships: Dancers will receive a school credit for 1/3 the amount of any cash scholarship
awarded divided among the participants in that particular number. It will be applied to lessons, costumes,
entry fees, or other expenses related to dance training. The other 2/3 will be divided between the studio
and the choreographer.
3. Dancers are required to attend all awards ceremonies you are eligible for unless otherwise specified by
studio director or teacher.
4. Call time (competition call time will be distributed 1 week prior to the competition)

Select Rehearsal Fees:

Teacher rehearsal fees include:
1. Picking musics
2. Picking costumes
3. Choreography Charge
4. 6 Private lessons with choreographer to teach choreography
a. 2 sessions for solos and duet/trios with choreographer for critiques and to clean routine
b. 4 sessions for groups with choreographer for critiques and to clean routine
5. Music purchased and edited to fit time constraints
6. Music supplied to dancer
7. Use of studio practice space during studio hours as available
In addition to select rehearsals, we ask our dancers to always practice their routines at home. This will help to
avoid extra rehearsal fees. Should extra rehearsal time be required, after a routine is taught and cleaned,
additional private class fees will be applied. It is also a teachers discretion to remove a routine they deem not
ready for a competition.
It is expected that all dancers will be on their best behavior during rehearsals and work as team players at all
times.
We believe the lessons learned through performances are just as valuable as the competition experience.

Costumes:
1. Dancers are responsible for all costumes including headpieces, accessories, and small props (fans, canes,
etc). Teachers will transport larger props. Costume racks will not be provided. If you lose, forget break etc.
any part of your costume/prop, and it is deemed irreplaceable by the time of performance, you will not be
able to perform.
2. Makeup, hair, tights shoes and accessories must be exactly to the specifications given by your teacher. DO
NOT TAKE IT UPON YOURSELF TO CHANGE YOUR COSTUME AND/OR ACCESSORIES AT A PERFORMANCE
BECAUSE SOMEONE LOST THEIRS.
3. Think of a costume as a uniform. The purpose is to make everyone look the same. Therefore, poorly done
hair, incorrect earrings or eyelashes, ripped tights, dirty or damaged shoes, un-hemmed costumes,
extraneous body liners and undergarments, etc., etc., are not acceptable.
4. Costume payments are the sole responsibility of the parent or guardian. A costume is required for each
competition number including solos, duos, trios, select & production numbers. The average cost of a
costume is $80 to $200. Costumes must be paid in full (see schedule).
a. If Competition dancer is dismissed or leaves the program, an understudy will replace him or her. The
student leaving the team is expected to turn in all costumes to the school office; they will be
returned to the student after the last performance of the season.
TIPS: COSTUME COMMON SENSE
Always have a second pair of tights available. Please plan ahead - do not
wait until the day before the competition to purchase additional tights. We may not have them in stock.
Place costumes in a garment bag for travel.
Hang and press costumes before each performance.
Place your name in all costume pieces and shoes.

We are a team and we fundraise as a team.

Dos and Donts:

Some parents may compare their childs progress or class or choreography placement to that of others in the
program. Watch for this behavior in your children as well, and encourage them to focus on their own
accomplishments. Looking to others for inspiration is a good thing; however, a negative focus or comparison
distracts from the energy that could be focused on becoming a stronger dancer. In addition, speaking negatively
about your childs teachers, fellow dancers, or other parents in front of your child or other students could result in
problems far beyond your original concerns. Often children will react to their parents in a way that imitates the
parents behavior with other adults or authority figures.
Children learn important lessons from their teachers and parents, acquiring important behavior patterns through
their example. Our schools faculty takes that responsibility seriously. Its our philosophy to encourage our students
to feel, think, and act respectfully to their peers, the adults in their lives, and themselves.
If you have questions or concerns about your childs dance education, DONT PANIC and PLEASE DONT TALK TO
OTHER PARENTS when questions arise. Make an appointment to speak directly to your childs teachers or the
director of the school.
If you do request a conference, please listen carefully to what your childs teachers have to say. They spend a
significant amount of time with your child and can offer expertise in the field of dance education.
RDC Director and Teachers reserve the right to deduct points, remove a child from a dance, or from the team if
obligations are not met. If a child is removed from the competition team or a dance the parent is responsible
for all fees paid by Relev Dance Centre.
The financial support of your student is important, but of equalperhaps even greatervalue is
your emotional support.

Page | 8
CLASS PLACEMENT OR CHOREOGRAPHY:
Placement for classes and selects are done through auditions. The panel consists of the studio faculty which allows
us to look at all aspects of each dancer their technique, musicality, and stage presence. It is our policy to offer
appropriate opportunities to every child.
Placement decisions are derived from many years of teaching experience. Often a child is placed in a particular
group or class where he or she will feel confidant, in order to promote the development of self-esteem. Some
dancers who are placed in a higher level become discouraged, only to lose their passion for dance. Others
respond to the challenge of being in a class with dancers who are more proficient by pushing themselves to work
harder. Placement is highly individual and the factors that go into the decision are complex. Please request a
meeting with Miss June and your childs teacher if you have questions or concerns about your childs placement.
Class placement of students is highly individual and the factors that go into the decision
are complex.

RDC IMAGE:
The children and parents involved in the Competition Team participate in many outside activities, each of which
becomes a reflection of the schools philosophy.
Please keep the following in mind:
We never speak negatively about teachers, dancers, or parents from other schools.
We never speak negatively about our team family OR other students affiliated with RDC.
We never create conflict with the directors or judges of events in which we participate.
The school director handles all communication with the directors of our outside activities.
No parent or dancer may call or question the directors of any event. If you have a concern, please
contact the director of our school.
No boyfriends or friends at the studio or at any event. We are there to work. This is our job.
Be careful what is posted on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or any social media

POINT SYSTEM:
o Rehearsals, Parades, Sayville Festival, Workshops, etc: Our solid reputation for quality reflects our attitude
toward competition and our goal to develop in each student a genuine respect for dance as an art form.
We consider participation in competitions not simply part of our students training as dancers; its also an
important part of how we influence them as people. With the right focus, the experience gained in
competition can be an excellent source of self-confidence. If the dancers feel good about a performance
and understand that they become better each time they go on stage, they are truly growing through the
competition experience. Hitting that stage and doing the best they can is what its all about; whether they
winor which award they winis secondary.
o Through participation in competitions, we hope to instill in our students an appreciation for other dancers
and schools. We are not out to beat anyone; instead, we hope to motivate both students and faculty by
exposing them to the highest caliber of talent available. Only then can we produce the best dancers and
teachers possible. For us, competition is an education!
o Since it is our goal to instill a passion for performing rather than merely the desire to win awards,
competition dancers have performance opportunities other than competitions. They perform in the Sayville
Holiday Parade, Blue Point/Bayport St. Patricks Day Parade, Patchogue Band Shell and the Sayville Festival
in August. In addition, we may be asked to perform at senior citizen dinners and/or nursing homes. We
believe the lessons learned through performances are just as valuable as the competition experience.

PROBATION:
Any student not meeting all requirements or a student whom a teacher feels is not progressing with the class will
be placed on probation. A dancer placed on probation will remain in the competition class, but will not compete
with the team. In addition, the dancer must meet all requirements of the dance team (i.e., parades, absences,
rehearsals, etc.) for that year. The dancer may perform in the recital.

ADVANCING TO A HIGHER LEVEL CLASS:

A team teacher and/or director may see potential in a team dancer to advance to a higher level in a certain
subject area. Based on teacher/director recommendation, the following may occur:
o Advancement: The dancer advances to the higher-level class and will compete with this class. Dancers
are recommended to continue to take and compete with their previous level class for the first year but are
not required to do so.

o Intern Dancer: The dancer is not yet up to the competition level of the class; however the teacher and/or
director see potential in the dancer. The dancer has the option to take classes with the higher-level class
but will not compete with this class. The dancer is required to continue to take and compete with their
existing level class. The dancer will be allowed to dance in the recital with the higher level class, but this is
optional as an additional costume would be required.

TRIAL DANCERS ( NON-COMPANY MEMBERS):

o A New student that has NOT auditioned for the company, but the teacher and director sees a potential.
This student will attend classes with the team and will be assigned additional classes that they will have to
take and perform in the recital. This will give them a well-rounded dance experience and cover all aspects
of dance technique. They will be able to purchase dance company costumes with the understanding that
they MAY or MAY NOT be able to perform at the recital. This decision will be based on whether or not their
dance technique and knowledge of the material is at the level of the rest of the team
o At the end of the year, the teacher and director will complete a Trial Student/Parent Evaluation form. To
be able to audition for the team the following year, the parent and child must receive 85%. In order to trial
again but not audition, the parent and child must receive a minimum of 75%.
Please attend all meetings, read all newsletters and postings to our website to keep
updated about any additional commitments.

GOOGLE CALENDAR:
All rehearsals will be updated through Google Calendar. For directions go to www.relevedance.com and log into
team page.
