Treatment: Short Film- Oh Sister

Product:
We aim to produce a short film, which will last approximately 5 minutes based around
the genre of Romantic Drama called Oh Sister. Our production company aims to
market our production at the internet this is because many teenagers use the internet,
mostly social networking sites such as Twitter or YouTube which we have created
accounts for, this can gain us a lot of views we also aim to market our productions are
cinemas and TVs. Teenagers and those in their twenties and thirties are our main
target audience its important that as a group we aim our production at them and use
social media account we have made in order to publicise. Its known that social media
has become a huge part of young peoples lives therefore it benefits a small
production company such as JKR productions to advertise Oh My Sister on popular
platforms. Also, we plan on using YouTube to market our product before the trailers
of other films that are a similar genre to ours this would attract fans of romantic
dramas as well as fans of dramas and romances to our film, as YouTube is one of the
most visited on the internet.

Genre:
As a group, we decided with the genre Romantic Drama, we are aware that this may
be a challenge but we are prepared to take on this challenge and to extend our skills.
We believe that a Romantic Drama sparks interest and sympathy in many different
age groups. Our genre will keep the audience interested and attached to the characters
and the story line as it grows throughout the productions and there are some surprises
and truths that the audience wont except to happen so it can cause suspense.
Romantic Dramas are hybrids and tend to use conventions associated with both
genres, so the production will still be romantic but can have mild action and pressing
topics due to the influence of Drama. Create a hybrid genre is beneficial to us as we
are able to attract fans of both romance and drama genres, this widens our target
audience. In addition, romance and drama films are popular will all ages so our short
film has high potential to be successful.

Target Audience:
Our target audience is 12-80 both males and females, the socio-economic groups we
will target B, C1, C2, D and E we will target these as they will either have no
disposable income or they will be working at a fairly well paid job as our target
audience is varied. As a group we aim to receive an optimistic response from our
target audience as well as any other viewers. We have targeted these people by setting
our production in urban areas making it relatable to our audience as well as well as
our actors belong to these classes. However, the people in higher socio-economic
groups such as Group A may not have time to go to the cinema and watch our short
film.

Duration:
The duration of our film is five minutes as our task is to produce a short film,
although 5 minutes is not a very long time, we still aim to take the audience on a
journey and allow them to develop and feel the emotions alongside our protagonist.
We want the audience to be intrigued all the way through our film and to fully
understand the narrative.
Context:
Our product should gain popularity through the means of mediums we will use to
create awareness of it, we will use the internet-Twitter, YouTube and other search
engines such as Facebook to promote our film or to raise awareness to it this is a very
cheap way of getting our product across. The more exposure to our film the more our
target audience will know of it as well as people who are not in our target audience,
also the internet is easily accessible to all this means we can collate more feedback as
it can be well known. Furthermore, we could use our own blog to promote our final
piece this can be done by using blogger which has many viewers and is very popular.

Outline:
Our short story Oh Sister looks at the mental and emotional aftermath of death and
the grieving that people go through. Throughout the film, our protagonist, 16-years-
old Tilly, goes out with her 16-years- old, non-identical twin sister Taylor. Tilly steps
into her twin sister room whilst Taylor is sleeping. Tilly stands next to Taylors bed
and starts to drag her twin sister out of bed. Taylor eventually gets up and the two
sisters get ready. After the girls get ready, they leave the house. The two sisters then
go to the park, with Tilly talking and Taylor looking deep into her eyes as if she wants
to talk but remain silent, whilst there at the park they receives weird looks from
onlookers watching suspiciously. Despite the strange looks they receive from people
and Taylor isnt responding to Tilly. They are still having fun being together. Tilly and
Taylor then walk off the audience then realise that theyve appeared at a cemetery and
Taylor disappears leaving Tilly alone. It then flashes back to Tilly buying flowers for
Taylors grave and takes out her funeral programme and lays it down with the flowers
saying These are your favourite. She breaks down in tears as she kneels in front of
her gravestone. When Tilly leaves, she sees Taylor behind her and says Oh Sister.
Taylor waves and disappears.

Media Languages:
We aim to follow the code and conventions of a Romantic Drama this includes having
symbolism of hearts and flowers to connote Love, empathy and there is always
disruption to the love this creates drama into the production. This is because we
believe having a simple and easy to follow storyline, simplifies the understanding
from the audiences view but also it allows the cinematographer and the director to
have a clear and easy to visualise image in our heads of how we want the product to
be created. The codes and conventions are supported by the lighting e.g. bright when
needed and full of colour when necessary. Furthermore, it is important that we aim to
add extreme and close up shots when filming as it enhances and emphasises the
characters emotions and feeling throughout the production this allows the audience to
fully understand what the characters are feeling and how they are effected by what is
going on in the scenes.

Visual Elements:
Lighting:
In our short film, the lighting is high key as all filming is done in daylight, this allows
the audience not to anticipate any sudden changes so when the lighting changes, it
will show a change in the narrative. The change in lighting occurs during the
flashbacks to signify a change in time, as there is a different in lighting levels we need
to ensure that our film looks unprofessional as well as the audience are able to see the
characters when needed.

Camerawork:
We plan on incorporating a variety of shots and angles in order to keep the audience
intrigued throughout our short film. Oh Sister follows the journey of a young girl
who is hallucinating and struggling to come to terms with the loss of her twin sister, it
is important to include point of view shots to allow the audience to see the world
through her eyes. Some shots are crucial for the development and continuity of the
film such as a two shot to see the interaction between 2 characters. The choices of
shots and angles used will be considered well as each shot must help portray a
message to our target audience.

Editing:
To edit our short film, we will be using Final Cut Pro X software, even though editing
is the last process of our film its essential that our film is edited to a high standard.
This is so our audience understand the narrative and are able to follow it easily as well
as the outcome needs to look professional in order to attract our audience. Our short
film contains a few flashbacks, its crucial that the audience understand that we are
showing past events. To execute this correctly the editor will have to consider
adjusting the colour of the flashback sure our narrative is portrayed as its important
that we dont include unnecessarily long clips as it would be wasting time.

Audio Elements:
Sound:
We will be incorporating voiceover spoken by the protagonist as well as dialogue to
give the audience an insight into her true thoughts and feeling. Using this method
allows us to focus on filming. By using voiceovers, it means that we dont have to
worry about the sound levels for dialogue during the filming process. Non-diegetic
music will be added during the filming process. Music is very important when trying
to convey a specific message to the audience: as our film is a romantic drama, our
music needs to create a tense and emotional atmosphere.

Institutions:
We come up with name as it is the first letter from all of our first names which is
important when creating a film. This is as our production needs to be the best quality
as possible in order for the outcome to be professional. However, as a group, we
believe 'JKR Productions' as it is a combination of all our names.
Representation:
We believe that the audience must be able to relate and potentially connect with both
our characters, considering that our narrative can happen in reality and that its a very
difficult time to go through. It can show that some people may have had this
experience and been through. It can show that some people may have had this
experience and been through this struggle. We want our production to show our target
audience that this does happen in real life and that grieving for someone you had lost
is long process but there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Our main character
is easy to relate to as even if you havent lost a partner you can relate to it in
heartbreak of breaking up with someone as this also happens to her. Representing her
in this way allows people to look into her situation and take into consideration the
reality and emotional and physical effect of losing someone can have on your
everyday life. The representation of our characters help us raise awareness about the
effects of losing a loved one and how each coped differently and see different
perspectives of the situation.

Logo:
We chose this specific picture for our logo because its eye catching and
should captivate our audience attention, as it is clear what our
production name is.
