827 DIE ZAUBERFLOTE (Tho Magic Flute) Opera in two acts. Libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder First performed at the Theater auf der Wieden, Vienna, September 30, 1791 CHARACTERS ‘Tamino, a prince; tenor ‘Three Ladies, attendants of the Queen of the Night: two sopranos and a mezzo-soprano Papageno, a bird catcher: baritone ‘The Queen of the Night: coloratura soprano ‘Monostatos, a Moor in the service of Sarastro: tenor Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night: soprano ‘Three Genii: two sopranos and a mezzo-soprano (or boys) ‘The Speaker, one of Sarastro’s priests: bass/baritone Sarastro, high priest of Isis: bass ‘Two Priests: tenor and bass ‘Two Men in Armor: tenor and bass Papagona: soprano First Slave: speaking part Second Slave: speaking part Third Slave: speaking part Priests, slaves and followers Legendary times, in Egypt ‘THE PLOT acti ‘Tamino, a prince, is trying to escape from a huge serpent. He has no weapons, is exhausted, and as the beast approaches, falls unconscious. Three Ladies, attendants of the Queen of the Night suddenly arrive ‘and kill the serpent with their spears saving the young prince. The ladies rejoice in their trlumph and ‘comment on how handsome the youth is whom they have just saved. Just as they leave to report the episode to the Queen, Tamino revives. He sees a strange man covered with feathers coming towards hhim. It is Papageno, the Queen's bird catcher, who tells us in his song that he is pining for a girl-frlend to make him happy. They introduce each other and Papageno boasts that it was he who killed the serpent. For this lie he is immediately punished by the reappearing Three Ladies, who place a padlock onhis mouth. They then show Tamino a miniature portrait of the maiden Pamina, the daughtor of the Queen, and ask him to rescue her from the clutches of Sarastro. He gazes at the portrait and instantly falls in love. ‘The Quoon herself materializes and entreats Tamino to free her daughter, promising him that his reward will be Pamina herself. The Ladies return, remove the padlock from Papageno’s mouth, ‘which makes him extremely happy, as he can now babble on again, and present him with a set of magic chimes. To Tamino they present a magic flute. By means of these magic instruments they will be able to escape the dangers of their joumey. As their guides the Queen supplies three Genii to accompany them. ‘The scene changes to a room in Sarastro's palace. A lustful Moor, Monostatos, is pursuing Pamina with unwelcomne attentions. The sudden appearance of Papagono frightens the Moor away and Papageno, recognizing Pamina as the daughterof the Queen, informs her about Tamino's imminent rescue, and how 528 he had fallen instantly in love with her upon seeing her portrait. Papageno’s gentle nature quickly charms Pamina, and she is sincerely moved to pity when Papageno pathetically tells her that he also wishes to find himself a sweet Papagena to keep him company. Noxt, the action moves to a grove on three sides of which stand three Temples dedicated respectively to Wisdom, Reason and Nature. Tamino is led here by the three Genif, advising him to be silent, patient and persevering, Tamino trios to entor one of the Temples but mysterious voices forbid his admittance, The same occurs as he tries to enter the second Temple. From the third emerges a priost (The Speaker), ‘who informs him that Sarastro is no tyrant, no wicked sorcerer as the Queen had described him, but a man of wisdom and noble character. ‘The dialogue with this priest has a great effect on Tamino, who now uses his flute to play and sing. The wild beasts emerge from everywhere, and tamely come to lie at his fect, but before his song is over, he hears Papageno's pan-pipe, and rushes off to find him. From tho opposite direction Papageno enters with Pamina, trying to unite her with Tamino, but they are overtaken by Monostatos, who this time manages to capture them. Disaster seems near, but Papageno remembers that he has the magic bells, with which he miraculously reduces the menacing Monostatos and slaves to harmless dancing puppets. A flourish of trumpets is heard, announcing the arrival of Sarastro. Pamina kneels at the foot of the noble priest, and explains that she was trying to escape the ‘unwanted attentions of the salacious Monostatos. Sarastro comforts her and assures her that he ‘understands'her predicament, and that the gods aim to provide a temody. Monostatos drags Tamino in and denounces him to Sarastro, but instead of the reward he expects, Sarastro orders that he be caned on the soles of his fect. Pamina and ‘Tamino see each other for the first time in a rapturous moment. By command of Sarastro, Tamino and Papageno are brought into the Temple of Ordeal, where they must prove that they are worthy of a higher happiness. acT it Ina grove of palms outside the Temple, Sarastro informs the priests of the plan he has laid. The gods have decided that the maiden Pamina shall become the wife of the noble prince Taraino. Tamino, however, must prove that he is worthy of admission to the Temple, Therefore Sarastro has taken Pamina ‘under his protection, keeping her away from her mother the Quoen of the Night, mistress of darkness and superstition. ‘The couple must endure several severe ordeals in order to be worthy of admission to the Temple, and thus thwart the machinations of the Queen. Sarastro prays to Isis and Osiris that the young couple may be granted strength to survive their ordeal and attain their goal of wisdom. ‘The ordeals of Tamino and Papageno are about to begin. They stand on the porch of the Temple and are warned by the Priests that they may perish in their search for the Truth. They are enjoined to total and complete silence as their first step in their probation. They are warned about ‘the wiles of women". No sooner are they left alono than the three Ladies appear and try to persuade them to abandon their quest, but the men maintain their rigid silence and after the women depart, are congratulated by the Priests on having passed their first test. In a garden, Pamina is asleop. Monostatos is lurking about, lusting after her in a menacing but also pathetic ditty in which he whimperingly protests that even though he is black, he is also made of flesh and blood and has his needs. AAs he {s about to pounce on Pamina, a cry of *Stand back!” startles him: It is the Queen of the Night, who jolts Pamina awake by presenting her with a dagger with which she is to kill Sarastro. She does this in an aria of challenging vocal pyrotechnics, boiling with rage and fury. After the Queen disappears, Monostatos comes out from behind the tree where he had been hiding, and threatens Pamina to reveal the assassination plot (to which Pamina never agreed), unless she love him right there and then, Sarastro arrives just in time to thwart the Moor, who mutters as he goos off that he will now try his luck with the mother, since he got nowhere with the daughter. Back to Papageno, who is told by the Priest that he can have any wish granted. A wine cup magically appears, which he avidly drinks, but somehow be is not satisfied. Ho wants something else and he expresses this in @ song, longing for ‘a lite wife of his own", at the end of which the old hag reappears Tah cackling voice she throatens him with dire penalties if he doesn’t swear that he will be true to her. Whon he finally agrees, she reveals herself as a young and attractive feathered mate, but the hapless Papageno is told by the Priest in no uncertain terms that he is still not worthy of hes Pamina, left alone for the moment is contemplating suicide. Before the Temple, Monostatos, the Queen and the three ladies are making their last bid for vengeance against Sarastro.
