SOLVING SYSTEMS
~Equations are used to describe relationships between variables.A linear equation
can be expressed in one ,two,or more variables.
Linear equations in two variables are graphed as straight lines in the coordinate
plane.In a system of linear equations in two variables, the orderd
or pairs that satisfies all.
2a+4b=18
2a-3b=4
7=14
b=2

SOLVING SYSTEMS
~The solution of a linear system is a point (x,y) that satisfies both equations, we
can isolate one variable in one equation.
That gives us the value of one variable. We then substitute that value of the
second variable.

________________________________________________________________
2x-y=0

x+y=6
~In this case, we will isolate y in the first equation. So the first equation
becomes y=2x
~Substituting for y in the second equation.So the first equation becomes y=2x
x=2 (solve
for x)
~Now we substitute the value of x in the first equation
2(2)-y=0
y=4 (solve
for y)

________________________________________________________________
~So the solution of the system in our example is (2,4) because this point satisfies
both equations of the system. Lets substitute these values for x and y in
the left-hand side of each equation.
~On substituting in the first equation,we get 2x-y=2(2)-4=0
On substitututing in the second equation we get x+y=(2)+(4)=6
~Notice that after substituting values , the results we get are equialent to the
respective right-hand sides of the equations.Therfore, we say that this point
satisfies both equations of the system.
~Solutions of linear systems are not always whole numbers;they can also be
fractions,depending on the values of the coefficients of the variables.

SUMMARY
~In this lesson, we solved linear systems using the substitution method. Most of
the examples we solved had solutions. Some systems do not have a solution
~Linear systems are used in buisness to madel cost structures,investments,and
break-even analyses.Equations of linear systems that are expressed as inequalities
give diffirent results and have their own applications. Linear inequalities form
the basis for linear programming.
