) WHY DO YOU CONSIDER
PLAGIARISM IS A CRIME?
This depends on the nature of the
plagiarism, but it violates legal ownership
(copyright) of an intellectual property, then
it is a crime.The important word here is
violates for in most cases, one is allowed to
copy a product for ones own perusal or
backup. Say, for example, that you own a
book in poor condition and want to read it
without risk of damaging it further. You
might use the technique employed by many
libraries and photograph the particular pages
so that you can view them without having to
continuously handle the original page. If you
were to share these photographs with others
(even without any form of payment), it could
be considered a violation (consult a
copyright attorney before acting on my non-
professional observations).But I suspect that
your question is probably closer to this one:
Why is plagiarism taken so seriously (that it
is treated like a crime)?The best answer I can
give to this question is that the plagiarizer is
trying to get credit (academic, social,
financial) for something they did not
produce. This, then, is a double theft: It
steals from the author in that he or she loses
incrementally from the population that
would appreciate the product now falsely
attributed to the plagiarist; and it steal from
those who are giving their credit (a grade,
respect, money, trust) to someone who does
not deserve it.

There are different types of plagiarism and
all are serious violations of academic
honesty. We have defined the most
common types below and have provided
links to examples.
Direct Plagiarism -Direct plagiarism is the
word-for-word transcription of a section of
someone elses work, without attribution
and without quotation marks. The deliberate
plagiarism of someone else's work is
unethical, academically dishonest, and
grounds for disciplinary actions, including
expulsion. [See example.]
Self Plagiarism-Self-plagiarism occurs
when a student submits his or her own
previous work, or mixes parts of previous
works, without permission
from all professors involved. For example, it
would be unacceptable to incorporate part
of a term paper you wrote in high school
into a paper assigned in a college course.
Self-plagiarism also applies to submitting
the same piece of work for assignments in
different classes without previous
permission from both professors.
Mosaic Plagiarism-Mosaic Plagiarism
occurs when a student borrows phrases
from a source without using quotation
marks, or finds synonyms for the authors
language while keeping to the same general
structure and meaning of the original.
Sometimes called patch writing, this kind
of paraphrasing, whether intentional or
not, is academically dishonest and
punishable even if you footnote your
source! [See example.]
Accidental Plagiarism-Accidental
plagiarism occurs when a person neglects to
cite their sources, or misquotes their
sources, or unintentionally paraphrases a
source by using similar words, groups of
words, and/or sentence structure without
attribution. (See example for mosaic
plagiarism.) Students must learn how to cite
their sources and to take careful and
accurate notes when doing research. (See
the Note-Taking section on the Avoiding
Plagiarism page.) Lack of intent does not
absolve the student of responsibility for
plagiarism. Cases of accidental plagiarism
are taken as seriously as any other
plagiarism and are subject to the
same range of consequences as
other types of plagiarism.
THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF
PLAGIARISM?
It's important to know what plagiarism
is, and what form it takes (some common
types of plagiarism are listed here). It's also
important to know how plagiarism
happens. The final step is to develop
effective academic skills. Many students
who plagiarise do so unintentionally, often
because they don't have the academic skills
to avoid over-reliance on the work of others
or because they aren't sure what constitutes
plagiarism. So, it's important to take every
opportunity to develop your academic
skills.
