Abstract
The flipped classroom is an innovative pedagogical approach that focuses on learner-centered
instruction. With this approach, instructors typically assign recorded video lectures as homework, and use class time for active learning exercises and direct engagement with students. The main goal of this study was to show how flipped classroom can improve the quality of higher education in Rwanda. The specific objectives were: i) to analyze the challenges facing the higher education in Rwanda, ii) to evaluate the impact of flipped approach on higher learning activities , iii) to illustrate how to successfully implement the flipped classroom in higher institutions in Rwanda iv) to describe students' perceptions on flipped classroom. Secondary data was collected and primary data were collected from five selected higher institutions in Rwanda. The following challenges were revealed: lack of sufficient teaching materials, students disengagement in the out-of-class learning. Concerning the impact of flipped classroom, the following findings were identified: improved educational outcomes, increase student participation, engagement, and motivation, interactive lectures, student-driven lectures. The researchers recommend that policy makers in education should adopt the use of new technologies and innovative methods in developing new curriculum.
