Inverted Questions

Drop est-ce que and invert the

subject pronoun with the verb,
joining them with a hyphen. In
English...Play-you football ?
(We use the auxiliary verb do
you/does he to solve the problem).

1. If you already have a pronoun in

the question, drop Est-ce que and
invert the pronoun and verb.

ex. Est-ce que vous parlez anglais?

Parlez-vous anglais ?
2. If the verb ends in a vowel
sound, you will need t- in the
3rd person singular. The other
conjugations dont have this vowel
problem.

ex. Est-ce quil travaille?

Travaille-t-il ?

3. If the question uses a noun

(common or proper) you must put
the noun at the start of the
sentence, then a comma, then
invert the verb with the pronoun
(for that noun).

ex. Est-ce que le garon vend

la voiture ?
 Le garon, vend-il la voiture ?

ex. Est-ce que Jacques vend la

voiture ?

Jacques, vend-il la voiture ?

4. If the question uses a question

word such as : Qui est-ce que,
Pourquoi est-ce que, Combien est-
ce que, etc., put the noun first,
separated by a comma, then the
question word.

ex. Pourquoi est-ce que Jacques

vend la voiture?
 Jacques, pourquoi vend-il la
voiture ?

NOTE : ne... pas will go around the

inversion

ex. Ne vas-tu pas parler au prof?
