study fees!

a) Get your appointment with the embassy as fast as possible
4) Prepare your visa application documents carefully. For most applicants this includes:
a) Make sure your passport is valid according to the visa regulations
b) Open the blocked bank account as fast as possible.
If other banks than Deutsche Bank are available, it may be wise to compare the conditions.
c) Get German health insurance. Public insurance is recommended.
e.g. with the Techniker Krankenkasse (public health insurance company) contact: Mr. Doering:
Markus.Doering@tk.de
d) If you need an admission letter that is signed and sealed for the visa application process,
please contact the iPAB Coordinator Mrs. Carlsson ipab@gwdg.de
The coordinator will issue a new letter bearing her signature and the official stamp .

e) If you need more time for the visa application process than the deadline of arrival given on
the letter of admission, please contact the iPAB Coordinator Mrs. Carlsson ipab@gwdg.de
The coordinator will issue a new letter with a personalized deadline, which will be extended as far as
possible. Be aware that a late arrival will make studying a lot harder and missing the beginning of
certain classes might result in not being admitted into the class.
f) Get a visa support letter from the iPAB Coordinator Mrs. Carlsson ipab@gwdg.de
The coordinator needs your nationality, passport number, full name, date and place of birth, and a
current postal address to issue the letter.
g) If you need to give the authorities an address in Germany, and you dont have any
accommodation yet, you may use:
Albrecht-Thaer-Weg 3
37075 Goettingen
Thats the address of the iPAB coordination office and has worked well in the past. If any letters arrive,
the coordinator will collect and keep them until you come to collect them.
h) Prepare for the visa application interview by training carefully with our sample questions (see
attachment)
5) Try to find accommodation as soon as possible. Many new students arrive and competition is
high. Please refer to our accommodation guide.
A good contact to start is the Accommodation Service of the University of Goettingen:
Mr. Kochanowski jan.kochanowski@zvw.uni-goettingen.de
or the Facebook group of students who search and offer accommodation:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/975022582528165/
6) Calculate your expenses of living generously. Life in Germany is expensive.
Youll have to pay accommodation (between 200-450/month), health insurance (up to 80 /month),
broadcasting fee (18 /month), semester fees (about 340 each semester), communication, necessities,
food (up to 250 /month or more depending on your lifestyle), study materials, a bike, and still want to
spend some money on hobbies, excursions, or going out with friends. Finding work without knowledge of
German language is extremely hard!
7) Be aware that in Germany, people may have a completely different culture than in your home

country.
That means people will behave differently from what youre used to and expect you to behave in a manner
that may be unfamiliar for you. A good overview is given online and for free here:
http://www.make-it-in-germany.com/en
and here:
http://www.refugeeguide.de/en/
8) Be aware that Germany has a temperate climate and bring appropriate clothes.
9) For a smooth start and arrival in Goettingen, theres a student team to welcome and support

you.
Please contact the Study Buddy Program (http://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/108752.html) for a student
wholl fetch you from the train, guide you to your accommodation and show you the basics of living and
studying in Gttingen:
Register here: http://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/119816.html
10) Have a look at the welcome event calendar (coming soon) and register for events you plan to

attend.
It is immensely helpful to be introduced to the university, its electronic study organization system, the
library, and the city. Also, its a great way to meet fellow new students and make friends quickly.
