Mary Poppins Trinity Laban

Streets of London

(The stage is empty except for the two sets which are turned to show St. Pauls Cathedral
and the bank. Bert is centerstage, on his knees, drawing chalk drawings)

Bert: (Looking up at the audience, standing, brushes off his knees and gestures to the
drawings)
Today Im a screever, and as you can see,
A screevers an artist of the highest degree.
And its all me own work. From me own memory.

(Sung) Chim-chiminey, chim-chiminey, chim-chim cheroo

I draws what I Likes and I likes what I drew,
And me cap would be glad of a copper or two!

(Mary Poppins arrives stage left with the Children as Bert is looking down drawing)

Bert: Wait, dont move. (Kneeling down to trace her shadow) Say right where you are. Id
know that shadow anywhere! (standing up and looking at her) Mary Poppins!

Mary: Its nice to see you again, Bert. I expect you know the children.

Bert: Well, Ive seen them about! Chasin a kite most of the time.

Child 1: Mary Poppins is taking us to the park.

Child 2: Were going to play!

Child 3: I want to fly my kite.

Bert: To the park? Not if I know Mary Poppins. Other nannies take their children to the park.
When youre with Mary Poppins, suddenly youre in places that you never even dreamed of.
And as quick as you can say, Bob's your uncle, the most unusual things happen.

Mary: Im sure I havent even the faintest idea of what youre talking about.

Bert: Shes probably got something in mind she makes the most wonderful things happen
when youre least expecting it.

(The Children step over the pictures to look at them with Bert)

Child 2: Oh yes please, lets go to the circus!!!

Child 1: Oh, That ones lovely. If you please, Id much rather go there.
Child 3: Me too! I love penguins!

Bert: Beautiful, aint it, as done by yours truly. Theres a little country fair over the hill there,
even though you cant see it!

Bert: (Looking around) Nows the time Mary Poppins, No-ones looking.

Child 1: Please Mary Poppins, please!

Child 3: I really want to go to the fair Mary Poppins, please!

Child 2: I can almost hear the merry-go-round!

Bert: Alright. Ill do it on my own. Its easy. Let me see. You think. (puts finger to side of head,
Michael and Jane copy) You wink. (winks, so do Michael and Jane) You do a double blink.
(Bert, Michael, and Jane double blink) You close your eyes and jump! (All close their eyes and
jump onto the picture)

Mary: Bert what utter nonsense. (stepping over the painting to join them) Oh, why do you
always complicate things that are really quite easy! Dont slouch. Ready One Two
(They all jump on to the picture. Lights out)

Jane: Come on. I hear the merry go round.

Mary: (calling off after them) Dont fall and smudge the painting.

(Bert faces front, dusts off his hat, and puts it on. Mary faces front and puts up her parasol.
Nod at each other.)

Bert: There probably arent words to describe your emotions, ey kids?

Mary: Oh Please on the contrary there is a word Am I right Bert?

Bert: Youre right Mary Poppins. You just tell them what that word is!

Mary : Right Here we go. Its..

Song - Supercalifragalistic
Mary Poppins: Now, let me see. First of all, we must go to the piano tuners. And then we go
to Mrs. Cory's shop for some gingerbread.

Jane: Ah, gingerbread!

Mary Poppins: And then we go to the fishmonger's, I think, for a nice dover sole and a pint
of prawns. Uh, Michael, stop stravaging along behind.

Michael: We're going to buy some fish.

Mary Poppins: Uh, not so fast, please. I can't understand a word you're saying. Again? Och!
Oh, the poor man! Bless you. Well, yes, of course. There's not a moment to lose. I'll go
straightaway. And thank you very much.

Jane: What did he say?

Mary Poppins: He said, "you're welcome."

Jane: What else did he say?

Michael: I don't think he said anything.

Mary Poppins: You know best, as usual.

Michael: I thought we were going to buy some fish.

Mary Poppins: There's been a change of plans. Come along, please. Don't straggle. Andrew,
worrying won't help anyone. Why don't you go home and put your feet up? Oh, Bert, I'm
glad you're here.

Bert: I came over the moment I heard.

Mary Poppins: Well, how is he?

Bert: I've never seen him as bad as this, and that's the truth.

Mary Poppins: Oh!

Bert: How about them? It's contagious, you know.

Jane: Shall we get spots?

Mary Poppins: Oh, highly unlikely. Oh, uncle Albert!

Uncle Albert: Oh, bless me. Bless my soul. It's Mary Poppins! I'm delight-- -I'm delighted to
see you, Mary.
Mary Poppins: Uncle Albert, you promised!

Uncle Albert: Oh, I kn-- I know, I-- but I tried. Really, I did, my dear. I-- but I so enjoy laughing,
you know? And, well-- and when I start, it's all up with the-- that's what happens to me. I
love to laugh! Oh, my goodness! I can't help it. You can see that. I just like laughing, that's all.

Mary Poppins: Jane, don't you dare! You'll only make him worse. It's really quite serious!

Bert: Yes, whatever you do, keep a straight face. Last time, it took us three days to get him
down.
