ABSTRACT

The next decade will be the Wireless Era Intel Vice president, Sean Maloney. Times have

changed. People expect that they should not be bound to a network. In this scenario, Wireless

(WLAN) offers tangible benefits over traditional wired networking. Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity)

is a generic term that refers to the IEEE 802.11communications standard for Wireless Local

Area Networks (WLANs). Wi-Fi works on three modes namely Ad hoc mode, Infrastructure

mode and extended mode. While Ad hoc mode does not require any intermediary device,
Infrastructure and Extended modes use Access Point as interface between wireless clients.

The wireless network is formed by connecting all the wireless clients to the Access Point and

a single access point can support up to 30 users. The coverage area depends upon the location

where the Access Point is being placed. For transmitting data, Access Points use the

traditional Omni-directional antenna thereby limiting its range up to 100 meters. The aim of

this project is to increase the coverage area of an Access Point by replacing the Omni-

directional antenna with a Bi-quad antenna with parabolic reflector. The antenna is designed

using a copper wire and a reflector to enhance directivity and the ends of the antenna are

soldered to a co-axial cable for transmitting data. The results showed that the range of the

Wi-Fi coverage observed by replacing the antenna showed a 300% increase over the range

which the Omni-directional antenna could cover.
