GENRE: Practical Report

TASK EXPLANATION
Students will analyse and explain how chemical reactions are used to produce particular products and how
different factors influence the rate of reactions.

CONDITIONS
This assignment is an individual task, however the practical part can be completed in a group
You will be given four class lessons to research and discuss with your teacher
You will receive written and verbal feedback on one draft of your assignment
The final submission must be submitted as a HARDCOPY, either word processed or written in blue
or black
The task sheet must be submitted with the final copy

DECLARATION OF AUTHORSHIP:

I, _________________________________, declare that the following work and supporting drafts

are my own work. I have included all drafts with my final copy and references if applicable.

INTRODUCTION:
With more than 25 million kilograms manufactured each year, aspirin is probably the most commonly used
drug worldwide to treat pain, headaches and inflammation. Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) reacts with water
(such as water in body fluids) to give salicylic acid and acetic acid, as shown below:

YOUR TASK:
With so many companies advertising that their product works fastest, or is most effective, your task is to
determine under which conditions does aspirin dissolve fastest. It is assumed that the faster the aspirin
dissolves; the faster it is to work.
There are a number of variables that affect the rate of a chemical reaction. You are to investigate three
different variables that affects the rate of a chemical reaction: surface area, concentration of solution, and
temperature. You will present your findings in a scientific report.

- Introduce the uses and chemical structure of aspirin

Introduction - What is a chemical reaction, signs of a chemical reaction
100 words - What affects the rate of a reaction
- Hint: You could mention how this experiment links to the collision theory!
Aim - What is the purpose of the experiment?

- Which change of variable do you predict will dissolve aspirin the fastest?
Hypothesis
Remember: it does not matter if your hypothesis is incorrect!

Risk
- What are the risks involved in the experiment and how they can be reduced
Assessment

- List the materials that were used to perform the experiment

Materials
- Draw a large, labelled diagram of the apparatus setup

Method - In past tense, list the process of your experiment

Results - Present your data in a table or graphs, each labelled appropriately

- Discuss the results of the experiment and explain what they show and why
Discussion - Assess any errors in your experiment. How might these errors impact on your
results?
300 words - Explain how the experiment could be modified if it were to be repeated to
improve the accuracy of the results

Conclusion - Did you achieve the aim of the experiment?

- Was your hypothesis correct?
100 words - What did you find out?
It is predicted that when ________________________ is changed, aspirin will dissolve faster because

The independent variable (explain what you are changing or testing)

Dependent variable (explain what you are measuring or observing)

Controlled variables (explain what you are going to keep the same to ensure that your experiment is a

controlled experiment)

Fair test (explain how you will ensure that you have presented a true reflection of the results in this

experiment)
Decide which materials you will need for each variable change, and record them here.

Decide how you will change the independent variable, and record the method.

Include at least three safety hazards that should be considered while conducting this experiment. You can use
the following format or your own.

Risk Impact Safety Procedure
