(b. 1994, Chicago, IL) Sara received her BA
in Fine Arts at the University of
Pennsylvania. Her art exploration started
through the desire to capture the
intersection of her culturally grounded
memories. Her work uses her experience as

into capturing images that show the way of
life around her multiple, complex
communities. Glimmers of immigration,
sexuality, classification, and community
perceptions plague and underlie the
symbolic history of the materials with
which she chooses to work and create.

The cow is an animal revered and valued in many countries. According

to Persian civilization, the struggle between light and darkness is
embodied in cows. Persians believed that cows feed with their milk
which then in turn causes the rebirth of light and goodness against evil.
In the Christian bible, cattle and cows are considered beasts of
burden, animals made as accompaniment and labor aids to humans. In
Hinduism, the cow is considered holy and demonstrates nonviolent
generosity; they are animals that embody reincarnations of peoples
relatives. Symbolically, they are characterized as noble and brave, and
portray wealth, fertility, and abundance. Yet, the world eats
approximately 35,000,000 cows a year. These animals, held in such
high regards in much of the worldbe it economically, socially, or
religiouslyironically are also one of the most highly consumed
animals. They are not only consumed, but they are also used for their
milk, leather, and labor production.

The flowers add a second layer of symbolism. In Aztec and Mayan

culture, nature's growth is associated with the goddess and maiden
Xochiquetzal, who wore flowers on her and whose name translates to
flower precious feather. Their poetry has shown that indigenous
people believe there is a double symbolism of flowers as emblems of
both life and death. Additionally, carnations are specifically used in
occasions of death as well as life. They represent duality in the culture,
for they are used both in weddings and funerals. In Western culture,
carnationsbeing long lasting and fragrantare a popular choice for
sympathy arrangements. Variegated carnations symbolize regret that a
love cannot be shared, which is why I chose to make varied brown
carnation flowers. In Buddhism, there is a saying that says our body is
like a flower that blossoms and quickly withers.

The carnations cascading down from the skull of the cow show how
forgotten bodiesbrown bodies symbolize beauty that has passed and
has not been valued.
