The articles

Many people face challenges of articles when writing something. To avoid that you need to learn more
about the articles. In English there are two types of articles: definite and indefinite articles. In this writing
I am going to demonstrate how to use and when to use both articles.

We use definite The article when we know the noun, mentioned before or its unique. Here are some
examples.

Farah kicked the ball.

In this sentence, the ball shows that its visible or clear and therefore, the speaker made it definite.

The keys were stolen. In this sentence, The keys shows that they are already mentioned therefore, the
speaker used definite article.

The sun rises from the east. In this sentence, the sun and the east shows that they are unique, which
means there are nothing like them, so the speaker used definite article.

We use indefinite articles, when we mention a noun for the first time. We use a + consonant sounds
and "an + vowel sounds. Here are good examples.

I ate a cake. (cake" starts with 'c' which is consonant sound)

She is a nurse. ("nurse" starts with 'n' which is consonant sound)

I bought an umbrella. ("umbrella" starts with 'u' which is vowel sound)

They brought an apple. ("apple" starts with 'a' which is vowel sound)

Note that, we only consider the sound of the letter not its type. Here is the most confusing part when it
comes to indefinite articles. Some words that start with consonants are given article "an" because of
their sounds.

Hour, honour, honest, etc. Mohamed is an honest person. (Not "a honest person). On the other hand,
some words that start with vowels are given article "A" because of their sounds. "

Unit, eunuch, European, etc. London is a European city. (Not An European" city).
