Points to be remember while designing:

First draw the structure to be designed using nodes, beams, plates, surfaces.

While drawing important thing to be considered is first complete the small element of the

portion then repeat that for a whole structure.

Then assume the material, properties, dimensions of the elements.

Then define various loading conditions.

At Last analyze the structure.

Now we can see the simple design of water tank.

First open new file.

If there is no grid, click Snap node / Beam `

Create a single node by clicking at the center of the grid.

Then click Snap node / Beam to remove the grid.

By using Translational Repeat create another one node at a distance.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

By using Circular Repeat create another one node at an angle of 20.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

Again using Translational Repeat, create two steps above the two nodes with height inclusive
of free board.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

Using add 4-Noded Plates create the plates in between these nodes.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

Now select the plates using Plates Cursor.

Now again using Circular Repeat give repetition along the vertical axis.

Give 18 steps. i.e., (360 / 20) =18 steps.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

Then using the command Add Surface, create the surface at the bottom of the tank by clicking
the cursor adjacently.

Using 3D Rendered View we can clearly view the surface generated.

Now, we may assume the thickness of plates and surfaces.

General Properties Thickness

First, Plate Element Thickness.

Enter the thickness of plate at each node.

Also, here we may assume the material also.

Then click Add.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

Next click Surface Thickness. Then enter the thickness value.

Then click Add and Close the window.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

Now the added thickness will be displayed in a screen.

Select the section. Then Use Cursor To Assign plates. Similarly select the surface thickness and
assign it.

Now we can check the thickness of plates by viewing through 3D Rendered View.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

Next applying load conditions.

General Loads & Definitions Load Case Details Add

Load Case 1 Add Plate Load Trapezoidal Load <loads are plotted> Enter

Then Close it.

(Water pressure acting on the plate will be in trapezoidal shape with uniformly varying load)

In our case we have 2 steps of plates. Hence for the top plate if we give load limits as 0, 20 then
for the bottom plate it should start with 20.

Similarly for surface load,

Load Case 1 Add Surface Load Pressures On Full Surface <loads are plotted> Enter

Then Close it.

In the bottom surface the load acting will be uniform and hence if load acting on the side plate
end with 40, the load on the surface also should be taken as 40.

After assuming all the loads, the loads added will be shown in a tab.

Select that loads and Use Cursor To Assign view.

Now, the loading conditions in a tank are over. If necessary wind load can also be considered
depending upon the height of tank.

The next step of design is analysis.

Analysis/Print Commands No Print Add Close

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

Select the Perform Analysis

Then Analyze Run Analysis

Now the analysis report will be generated.

If there is any error it should be considered and to be rectify.

Thus the Water tank can be designed.

Shear force and Bending Moment

Let us take a sample structure.

Curved member

Shear Force along Y axis can be derived from this figure. The Shear Force and Bending Moment
can also be exported to MS Excel.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

Similarly S.F. along Z axis:

Torsion in the members:

Bending Moment about Y axis

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

Bending Moment about Z axis:

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

We may also design a frame (having 2 bedroom apartment with 4 houses) in another kind of
methodology in practice.

First Close the tab Snap Node/Beam

There is 2 another tabs such as

In this tab first node to assigned as 0, 0, 0

Then enter the distance along the axis where the node should be placed.

For the next floor it may be copied.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

Now if want to make the same nodes at other side, it is Copied by selecting it near the node
number.

Then it is Pasted.

Then some of the distance along the axis may be changed and new nodes are created.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

Using the command Add Beam all are connected.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

Same steps are repeated for creating the structure.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

Plates are assigned at the slabs.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

3D Rendered View of plates.

Materials and size of beams are assigned.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

Thickness of slabs are assigned.

Supports are provided at the bottom base.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT WING-UCEN, http://ucentp.in

Loads are assigned for both beams and plates.

Analyzed and output is shown below.
