Gas Dynamics / Sample Final Exam

1. An experimental image of the flow around a corner reveals the edges of the expansion fan to
be indicated by the angles shown in Figure 1. Assuming that =1.4,
a. Determine the Mach numbers before and after the corner.
{ M1 =1.65 and M2 = 3.04 }
b. Through what angle was the flow turned and what is the angle of the expansion fan?
{ d =34.2 and 3 =52.3 }

Figure 1.

2. A Converging-Diverging Nozzle has an area ratio of Ae/Ath =3. The pressure at the inlet is P01
= 800kPa and the back pressure is Pb = 350 kPa. With = 1.4,

a. Show that there must be a shock in the Diverging portion of the nozzle
b. Compute the Mach number at the exit { Me = 0.43 }
c. Compute the shock location (area) and the Mach number before the shock
{ 2.64 and 2.5 }

3. Air Enters a Converging-Diverging Nozzle at 2 MPa and 40 C. At the end of the Nozzle the
pressure is 200 kPa. If the throat area is 20 cm2,

a. What is the area of the nozzle exit? { 38.6 cm2}

b. What is the mass flow rate? { 9.14 kg/s }

4. A NozzleDuct system is designed to have a duct inlet Mach number of 2.8. The Nozzle inlet conditions are
P01 = 1 MPa and T01 = 370 K. The Duct is 8 diameters in length and the friction factor is unknown. If the back
pressure is fixed at Pb = 300 kPa and the is a Normal shock at the duct exit,

a. Sketch the T-s diagram for this system

b. Determine the friction factor in the duct { f = 0.0133 }
c. What is the total change in Entropy for the system? {s = 289.4 J/kg-K }

5. A Converging-Diverging Nozzle is operating between its second and third critical points with Me = 2.5, Te= 150 K
and Pe = 70 kPa, with a back pressure of Pb = 100 kPa. If the gas is Nitrogen (Look up the relevant values!),

a. Explain why there will be an Oblique Shock wave at the exit. (Draw a picture!)

b. Compute the Mach number and Temperature and Flow Direction after the Oblique Shock
