Solution Manager 7.2. The functional differences between IT PPM on SAP Solution Manager 7.1 and on SAP Solution Manager
7.2 are non-disruptive and therefore manageable. Using IT PPM already on 7.1 simplifies the transition to 7.2.
Automated Blueprint Generation

In SAP Solution Manager 7.2, the libraries are organized structured by the application component hierarchy. The blueprint
generation report available on SAP Solution Manager 7.1 builds up a process step library structured similarly and using
customer system usage.
For customers who do not have any solution documentation in place, this can serve as a foundation for building up
solution documentation structured by the application component hierarchy.
Customers with an existing solution documentation can use this report on SAP Solution Manager 7.1 to evaluate the
structure and to conceptually prepare for the new Process Management environment in 7.2. Please note that the project
generated for evaluation should not be selected for content activation.

optionally in SAP Solution Manager 7.1.
Using the Maintenance Planner already on 7.1 simplifies the transition

Please note additionally that SAP S/4HANA can only be maintained

and updated using the Maintenance Planner.

Keep your business process structure simple

The business process structure in SAP Solution Manager 7.1 is limited to the three levels Scenario
Business Process Business Process Step. If there was an urgent need for more than three levels, a
recommendation by SAP AGS best practices was to circumvent this restriction via naming conventions, e.g.
level 5 -> level 4 -> scenario.
If you are already using the described naming conventions, SAP recommends that you do not change anything
in SAP Solution Manager 7.1. After the upgrade to SAP Solution Manager 7.2, the additional levels can be
changed into regular folders manually.
If you start using SAP Solution Manager 7.1 now and intend to use such a naming convention, please follow the
guidelines in this best practice document. Please consider this activity carefully and be aware that this can
create additional efforts when changing the additional levels into regular folders in SAP Solution Manager 7.2.

Assign executables on process step level

To ensure a smooth transition and reduce post-activation efforts, SAP recommends that you assign test cases and
one executable (transactions / reports etc.) wherever possible on process step level.
This ensures proper functioning of Test Management, Business Process Monitoring and other SAP Solution
Manager capabilities.
Executable variants
The Executable Variants concept in SAP Solution Manager 7.1 provided the possibility to add variants to an
executable attached to a process step.
In SAP Solution Manager 7.2, Executable Variants will be represented by single process steps (one step for each
variant).
During the content activation process, executable variants will therefore be converted into single process steps.

Consolidating SAP attributes
In SAP Solution Manager 7.2, the set of SAP attributes has been cleaned up and reduced.
Therefore, the attributes listed below will not be available anymore. If you are actively using these attributes today and want to
keep them after the upgrade to SAP Solution Manager 7.2, you can convert them into customer attributes during the content
activation process.

This information is only relevant for customers who regularly create copies of projects to keep a
snapshot of a project.
In general, this approach is not recommended, because it drastically increases the number of projects
in SAP Solution Manager. The result may be that - during the content activation - projects are activated
which are not necessary. Customers may thus have to invest into unnecessary post-activation clean-
up activities.
If you need to take project snapshots in SAP Solution Manager, then SAP recommends to label these
copies as non-activation relevant via a naming convention. Project-based archiving capabilities are
planned for a later functional enhancement of SAP Solution Manager 7.2.

Clean up dead-end shortcuts which point to elements that do not exist anymore
Use report AI_DIR_STRUCTURE_NO_LOGCOMP to find process steps which do not have a logical
component assigned, and assign a logical component to these steps (or remove the steps)
Use report SOLMAN_DOCU_VERSION_ARCHIVE * to archive up old versions of KW documents. Alternatively

you can use report SOLMAN_DOCU_VERSION_DEL * to delete old versions of KW documents. This step is
optional to free up database space.
Please note:
KW documents which are not assigned to any structure object will not be activated. After the content activation
process, they will not be accessible anymore. You can use report SOLMAN_UNUSED_DOCUMENTS to find
unassigned KW documents.

Keep your managed systems up-to-date
SAP Solution Manager 7.2 needs connectivity to the SAP systems in the customer landscape, for example to
retrieve data for library generation and for monitoring purposes. This is technically ensured through the ST-PI
and ST-A/PI packages, which are installed in the managed systems.
To ensure that the technical upgrade of your SAP Solution Manager system runs smoothly, SAP recommends
that the ST-PI and ST-A/PI levels of customers managed systems should be at the latest available version.

The guided procedure in transaction PREPARE_ACTIVATION will help you define the activation scope before you actually start

Ramp-Up:
Customer should join Ramp-Up and evaluate the next generation of business process documentation if they have pain points
in process lifecycle management and the graphical process modelling environment of SAP Solution Manager 7.1.
All customers looking for a new installation should go for SAP Solution Manager 7.2 when available. Early adopters should join
the Ramp-Up program of SAP Solution Manager 7.2. For restrictions in Ramp-Up see next slide.
SAP Solution Manager 7.2 is the best Solution for customers implementing SAP S/4HANA. It offers unparalleled lifecycle
management of configuration information for SAP S/4HANA. SAP Solution Manager 7.1 customers will reach the same level
of SAP S/4HANA support when upgrading at a later time (e.g. during General Availability).
General Availability:
All customers upgrading from previous versions of SAP Solution Manager should go productive between general availability of
SAP Solution Manager 7.2 and end of 2017 at the latest, unless they accept customer specific maintenance.
SAP Solution Manager 7.2 can also run on SAP HANA as an underlying database. This database license for SAP Solution
Manager is included in your support contract. You should run SAP Solution Manager 7.2 on SAP HANA if you are
standardizing your applications on SAP HANA or if you want your IT team to build up experience in SAP HANA.
