In November 2015, frontman Marilyn Manson announced in an Marilyn Manson chronology

interview with KEGL that he, along with Tyler Bates, Twiggy and Gil The Pale Heaven
Sharone, had begun working on the band's tenth studio album.[5] Its Emperor Upside
title, then Say10 and release date were revealed in July 2016 during an (2015) Down
interview with Ryan J. Downey at the APMAs, after Manson had been (2017)
presented with their Icon Award. However, he also stated in the same
interview that Say10 was a "working title", implying that it could be Singles from Heaven Upside Down
altered before release.[6][7] The title dates back to Manson's twelfth-
grade Christian school yearbook.[8] 1. "We Know Where You Fucking

Manson as a recurring cast member, portraying a barber surgeon
sociopath named Thomas Dinley.[10][11] The band recorded parts of the
album in Louisiana, where Manson was filming scenes for Salem.[12] They had previously recorded their 1996
album Antichrist Superstar in the state.[9] In September, Manson confirmed that they were "putting the
finishing touches" on the record.[9] In April 2017, Robert Carranza, who had mixed The Pale Emperor,
announced that he had finished mixing the album.[13] Brian Lucey, who also previously worked on The Pale
Emperor, stated that mastering for the record, now called Heaven Upside Down, was completed in late June
2017.[14]

Composition and style

Manson has said that the album is "not very much in any way like The Pale Emperor. The people who have
heard the new songs said it reminded them of their favorite parts of Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical
Animalsbut with a new, different approach. It's pretty violent in its nature for some reason, and it's not
emotional in the same way. It's got a chip on its shoulder."[9] Manson has described it as "by far the most
thematic and over-complicated thing that I've done",[15] and has said it contains some of his most politically
thematic and over-complicated thing that I've done",[15] and has said it contains some of his most politically
charged lyrics.[8] He had previously indicated that he would not be voting in the 2016 US presidential election,
explaining that: "I dont think that, as an artist, I can make as much of a difference voting as I can the
commentaries I make in music".[16]

Release and promotion

On November 8, 2016the day of the US presidential electionthe band released a teaser clip of a new music
video.[17] Directed by Tyler Shields,[18] it features a scene of Manson tearing pages from Revelation 13 out of a
Bible, followed by shots of him brandishing a bloodstained knife and standing over a beheaded man dressed to
resemble Donald Trumpin a suit and red tie.[19][20][21] The album was tentatively scheduled for release on
Valentine's Day 2017,[22] although this failed to materialize.[23] A month-long period of silence from the band
on their social media accounts followed.[24]

On March 22, Manson posted a video on his Instagram account, featuring the Celebritarian Crossa variation
on the Cross of Lorraine used by Manson for his Celebritarian Corporation art movement[25]with the
caption: "6:19. The time has come."[26] Numerous publications hypothesized whether 6:19 referred to a June 19
release date, a Bible verse, or the lyrics to the Eat Me, Drink Me track "If I Was Your Vampire".[27] The band
have posted a further three clips on their Instagramall featuring the Celebritarian Cross, air-raid sirens, and
distant screaming,[28][29] with the latest video also revealing a hooded figure.[30] NME magazine contacted the
band for clarification towards the album's release, with a spokesman confirming it would see release during the
summer, although this was eventually pushed back to early fall.[31][32]

On May 8, Manson revealed that the album had been renamed Heaven Upside Down, and that its recording had
been completed.[33] An article posted by Vice magazine slated a July 9 release date for the album,[34] though
this was most likely a mix-up regarding the release date of a four-part HBO series called The Defiant Oneson
which Manson was scheduled to appear.[35] The band began their Heaven Upside Down Tour on July 20 in
Budapest. Manson and Bates' cover of Ministry's 1988 single "Stigmata" features on the soundtrack to the
Charlize Theron film Atomic Blonde, which was released on July 21.[36][37]

Manson explained the delay of the release of the album in an interview with Loudwire, saying he was not
satisfied with the record back in February, and that the band recorded a further three songs: "Revelation #12",
"Heaven Upside Down" and "Saturnalia". He said, "Those three songs take place in the three places where if
[the album] were a film, it's the opening, it's the middle and it's the ending. Then there's the song after 'Heaven
Upside Down', its sort of the end title credits where it's really surmising the story of the record, which is to be
interpreted by the listener. I wanted to draw people in sonically and lyrically. I'm glad. This record was meant
to come out now, for whatever reason. Things had to happen in my life, everything had to happen for a reason
for it to come out now."[38]

"We Know Where You Fucking Live" was released as the album's lead single on September 11, 2017, along
with the album's pre-order.[1] On the same day, the song premiered on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 show, who also
confirmed the album would be released on October 6.[4] The song's music video was posted onto YouTube on
September 15.[39]

Critical reception
Eleanor Goodman of Metal Hammer gave the album a positive review,
writing that it finds Manson "glancing back to the past. Throwbacks to Professional ratings
