END2101: Topic 7 Management of classroom behaviour

Why might students go off-task?

Eg If the teaching style is like a lecture, students become bored and

find it difficult to continue to focus.

i) Lack of motivation- not engaging

ii) lesson not aligned within the zone of proximal development

1 Why is gaining all students attention each time you start to give
instructions or explain concepts important?

i) Motivate the students and make them engaged in what is being

taught. One way this can be achieved by making the lessons relevant
to the students.

ii) to make sure all student understand instructions and concept

1 How would you engage students by ensuring they are all actively
busy most of the time?

i) Keeping them on task by asking open ended questions

ii) Breaking down tasks into smaller chucks to guide student

understanding and development and setting extra rewarded
challenges for advanced students.

How do you incorporate all students differing interests into lessons

where possible?

i) Adjust lessons and pedagogy to motivate intrinsically and

extrinsically motivated students
ii) make lesson relevant to all students.

1 How can you encourage students to understand that each lesson is

valuable to them?

i) Make lesson relevant to society

ii) explicitly explain learning objectives

1 Why is it worthwhile for students to set goals?

i) it is important for students to set personal goals to help motivate

them to learn

ii) short term goals- helps student to develop a sense of achievement

and help motivate students to further achieve their long term goals.

1 How would you teach students to set goals?

i) setting long term goals help student stay on track throughout the
year- teachers can assist student goals by providing positive
reinforcements.

ii) as a teacher I can adjust my pedagogy to relate to students lives

and society, also teachers can support goals by getting students to
self evaluate and set short term goals through reward systems ect..

1 Why is it important for students to monitor their goals?

i) it is important to teach students to self regulate their own learning to

monitor their goals and track their progress and achievement levels.
ii)

1 How could students monitor their goals?

i) learning to self regulate their own learning

ii) self evaluate their development and monitor their progress.

1 What can you do to make students feel safe to answer questions

and offer ideas, without fear of being ridiculed?

i) Positive reinforcements

ii) create a safe to fail environment

1 Students can make life extremely difficult for each other, which
impacts on their happiness at school, their self-esteem and
their engagement in learning. How can you help to foster
positive student relationships?

i) using cooperative learning experiences

ii) Pairing students with other students they do not normally interact
with.

1 Self-efficacy is students believing that they are capable of

completing tasks successfully. Without self-efficacy, students
will often avoid doing tasks in some way (perhaps by
procrastinating or disrupting others). How can you help
students to develop their self-efficacy?
Eg Start with simpler tasks where students can succeed, then
develop complexity.

i) making sure all students are within the zone of proximal

development before moving on to a new topic.

ii) Encourage peer teaching pairing advanced students with struggling

students to encourage further learning and support.

1 Metacognition (learning about learning) helps students develop

strategies to enhance their own learning. How will you help
students to develop Metacognitive skills?

i) using cognitive development theorist to support student learning.

And incorporate theories into predagogy e.g co operative learning
experiences,

ii)

1 How can feedback be used to help students to improve and not to

demoralise them when they make mistakes?

i) Provide positive feedback using techniques such as a positive

feedback with a negative feedback ended with a positive note on the
negative comment.

ii) giving negative feedback in a positive way e.g the outcome was
unfortunately incorrect but I can see your process was correct so
maybe just double check your calculations.

1 Students are more likely to stay on task if they know what to do?
How can you ensure you give clear instructions or
explanations?
i) break down task into chunks

ii) get students to complete one or two instructions before giving the
next lot of instructions.

1 Why might students go off-task if lessons are to slow, too fast, too
easy or too difficult?

i) lack of challenge results in lack of motivation and interest for

students to complete task

ii) if task are outside of the zone of proximal development either too
easy or too hard students will go off task. Setting lessons that provide
prior or existing knowledge in order to start a new challenge or new
task.

1 When you begin your Professional Experience, how can you

incorporate classroom rules into your own teaching?

i) explicitly explaining my expectations of them. Setting guidelines

and rules before the lesson begins e.g hand up if you have a
question,

ii) during the process of the lesson state expected rules before
teaching e.g please just listen to what I have to say and then in your
pairs I want you to discuss the answer and we will write them on the
white board.

1 i) What is following through

2 following through with negative and positive reinforcements will
motivate students to learn and behave within the classroom

____
ii) and why is it important?__it is important because it motivates
students to learn and be engaged with their learning experience.

1 List behaviourist strategies (rewards and punishments) to manage

behaviour, like name on the board.

i) providing positive reinforcements praise, reward systems, extra

time ect,
ii) negative reinforcements- looses points, gains detentions, misses
out of fun activities

1 Name 2 Low Level Management Strategies?

Eg move towards off-task student while you are teaching

i) eye contact with students that are distracted

ii) Gaining students attentions by asking questions to students that

are off task

1 Why are Low Level Management Strategies effective?

i) ensures that students are on task

ii) reinforces classroom rules.

1 What would the students be doing, that would make you decide to
use Low Level Management Strategies?
i) Talking

ii) Distracted or disruptive students

1 Why can separating off-task students help to manage classroom

behavior?

i) Eliminating the distraction

ii) Demonstrates to students the follow through of behavior

management.

1 What strategies can help to facilitate moving reluctant students?

i) Having a chair and desk next to the teachers desk.

ii) Putting chair in corner of room

25. How would you set up a Buddy Class to send students who are
repeatedly off-task?

i) Pairing students up with other students that are on task or

advanced learners to encourage student teaching

ii) Implementing a boy girl seating system separate off task

students.

26. Should off-task behaviour persist after 2-3 attempts to focus a

student, a discussion with the student can help to find out reasons
why the student is off-task and give you a chance to express your
concerns. Together you can develop strategies to resolve the
problem. To do this, what questions would you ask the student?

i) is there a reason that you are off task? Is everything ok in

your personal life?

iii) Do you understand the task? Can we work together to

complete the task?
iv) Have they had enough sleep and any food that day?

27. What points would you try to get across to the students when
discussing their off-task behaviour?

i) Further support is available to assist the student to get back

on task.

ii) is it a one off incident or a long term issue that is affecting

the students ability to stay on task.

28. What will you do, if students dont seem to respond to the
strategies you use to manage their behaviour?

i) Implementing negative reinforcements such as taking away

break times

ii) emails to parents or send them out of the class.

29. How does your attitude towards the students, influence

Classroom Behaviour?

Eg If students see that you value them and want the best for them,
they are more likely to comply

i) give students respect when appropriate

ii) positive energetic behaviors will help motivate student

learning. Creating a safe enjoyable learning experience for students.
