9
Health Education If character is lost,
Everything is lost.
A healthy mind rest only in a healthy body. Mans happiness in life depends
upon good health, vigour and vitality.
Life without health is a misery, a virtual death.
All these phrases reflect the importance of health in our lives. The following
texts will describe the concept and scope of health.

1.3.1 Concept
Health is everybodys concern. We all are concerned with our own health, the
health of our children, our families, friends and colleagues. Teachers have always
been most concerned about the health and well being of their students.
Generally we all want not only to be healthy but also to remain healthy. But the
main question coming to our mind repeatedly is What is health? What does
being healthy mean to us?
The most commonly found answer is freedom from any disease.

The above two activities must have helped you to realize the meaning and
importance of health in our lives. It also shows the contribution of health in our
lives.
10
You might have observed from the answers of the 10 individuals on the question Health and Health
what do you mean by health is that it is viewed differently by different people. Education
A common man may consider it nothing more than not being sick. For a teenager
it may be having good grooming and for a child of late childhood it is being
equated with he is to climb trees. For a mother, it is being stocky in context with
her children. A sportsman views it to have enough stamina and skills to excel in
the games. Generally, a child with happy face, free from any apparent signs of
diseases, manifesting normal developmental milestones and healthy habits, might
be healthy but we may not even consider him/her healthy in the absence of data
regarding his/her present state of health or history or family diseases.

11
Health Education If you consider your role as a teacher, healthy may mean the intellectual
capacity to be able to read and write and educate others. A person with physical
disability would perceive health as the capacity to cope with his disability and
to develop skills which would allow him to live and work with independence
and dignity.
Health is now seen as a positive assest which one has responsibility to earn
and maintain.
The World Health Organisation (1948) has defined health is a state of complete
physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or
infirmity.
Health implies a sufficient reserve of physical strength, ability and endurance
as well as mental equilibrium to meet the demands of life.
Would you agree with this definition?
No. Why?
It is not perfect. It cannot be achieved.
Yes. Such a state is impossible to achieve, and at least not for long period of
time. Moreover, this definition assumes a static position whereas life itself is not
static.
So, how can we define health?
Health may be seen as the ability of people to change to the constantly changing
demands and expectations in life.

1.3.2 Aspects

Physical Health,
Mental Health,
Social Health,
Spiritual Health

hair, firm flesh, proportionate body, favourable attitude, sound sleep, regular

emotion, the instincts and the tendencies. This also, leads to understand others
emotions, traits and behaviour. This is very important in the proper growth and
development of any individual. The normal emotional development in a child
leads to the maturity of mental life in an adult. With love and security a child
grows up as a useful member of the society.

optimistic and confident. He/she maintains positive attitude of life and enjoys
its blessings.
