Chapter III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The study will use a qualitative - exploratory research design. It provides a well-

grounded picture of a situation and establishes an understanding of the issue. It

identifies the boundaries of the environment in which the problems, opportunities or

situations of interest are likely to reside, and to identify the salient factors or

variables that might be found there and be of relevance to the research. It is

conducted when there are few or no earlier studies to refer to or rely upon.

Research Instrument

In-depth interviews will be used as the research instrument of this study. The

researchers will use closed and open-ended questions. This kind of interview is a

qualitative research technique that enables the researchers to explore the

perspectives of the selected respondents on a particular idea, situation and

experience.

Research Sites

The Department of Justice (RSSPU) and the United Nations High Commissioner

for Refugees will be the research sites of the study. The researchers selected these

for the following reasons: a) Both are not far from the city center; b) there are

1
numerous available related data for the study; and lastly c) The Department of

Justice has a protection unit for refugees while, the United Nations High

Commissioner for Refugees is the Philippine country office responsible for helping

refugees, as well as internally displaced and stateless people, worldwide.

Respondents

The respondents of the study are the Naturalized Refugees, the Department of

Justices Refugees and Stateless Persons Protection Unit and Legal Experts for

Migration Law.

Data Collection

The data will be collected through in-depth interviews using triangulation which

involves using multiple data sources in an investigation to produce understanding

(Cohen D. and Crabtree B., 2006). It will provide a check on selective perception

and illuminate blind spots in an interpretive analysis. It will be useful to acquire a

detailed information on the conditions and thoughts of the respondents. Camera and

voice recorder will be used to record the interviews with the permission of the

Naturalized Refugees, the Department of Justices Refugee and Stateless Persons

Processing Unit (DOJ-RSPPU) and the Legal Experts for Migration Laws.
