Getting To Know the BJ Printer Driver

Printer Driver Basics

The printer driver is a program that converts text or image files you've created with
an application into print data and sends that data to the printer. The printer driver
processes print data so the printer can use it.
To use a BJ printer connected to your computer, a printer driver must be installed.
For instructions on installing the printer driver, see the file Readme.txt.

Opening the Printer Properties Dialogue Box

To specify the print settings or use maintenance functions such as print head
cleaning, open the printer properties dialogue box. There are two ways you can do
this.
Note
?3 This section describes the general procedures for opening the printer properties
dialogue box. Depending on the application program you use, different menu items
may be used for printing. For more details, see the user's manual for your
application program.

From your application

You can open the Canon XXXX Properties dialogue box from your application
before printing. (XXXX is your printer's model name.) Here's how:
1. Select the command used for printing (for instance, Print or Print Setup in the
File menu) in your application.
2. Make sure Canon XXXX is selected in the Select Printer (NT 4.0: Name) box.
(XXXX is your printer's model name.)
If another printer is displayed, find the Canon XXXX icon (you can scroll the icons
horizontally if necessary) and select it (NT 4.0: click the down-arrow and select
Canon XXXX from the drop-down list).
3. (NT 4.0: Click Properties.
The Canon XXXX Properties dialogue box opens.
Make sure the Main, Page Setup, Effects, Profiles, and Maintenance tabs are
displayed in the dialogue box.)

Directly from the Start menu

To specify print settings that are common to all the applications you use, open the
Canon XXXX Printing Preferences (NT 4.0: Canon XXXX Default) dialogue box
from the Start menu. (XXXX is your printer's model name.)
This method is also helpful when you want to use maintenance functions such as
print head cleaning without starting up an application.
Here's how you do it:
1. Click Start. Point to Settings, then click Printers.

4
CANON BJ PRINTER DRIVER GUIDE

2. When the Printer window is displayed, click the Canon XXXX icon. (XXXX is your
printer's model name.)
3. Select Printing Preferences... (NT 4.0: Document Defaults...) from the File
menu.
The Canon XXXX Printing Preferences (NT 4.0: Canon XXXX Default) dialogue
box opens.
Make sure the Main, Page Setup, Effects, Profiles, and Maintenance tabs are
displayed in the dialogue box.

Setting Up the Printer Driver

Before you start a print job, open the Canon XXXX Properties or Canon XXXX
Printing Preferences (NT 4.0: Canon XXXX Default) dialogue box and specify the
printer driver settings needed to carry out the print job. The easiest way to do this is
to use the Print Advisor, which will make the basic settings for you. Alternatively, you
can manually specify any setting you like with the different tabs in the printer
properties dialogue box, allowing you fine control over such aspects as print quality
and colour adjustment.

Using the Print Advisor

The easiest way to set the printer driver up to handle a particular print job is to use
the Print Advisor. The Print Advisor wizard takes you through a simple step-by-step
question-and-answer sequence to find out what kind of print job you want to do.
Based on your responses, the Print Advisor suggests how the printer driver should
be set up to handle your print job, and will automatically apply these settings if you're
satisfied with them.
To use the Print Advisor, simply click Print Advisor on the Main tab of the Canon
XXXX Properties or Canon XXXX Printing Preferences (NT 4.0: Canon XXXX
Default) dialogue box and then respond to the questions that appear. After
responding to each group of questions, click Next to go to the next group. If you
change your mind about anything, you can click Back to change your previous
responses.

Using the Tabs

To specify printer driver settings manually with the different tabs in the printer
properties dialogue box, follow the instructions below.

Specifying the BJ Cartridge and Media Type

For correct printing, it's important you match the BJ Cartridge and Media Type
settings in the printer driver with the BJ Cartridges and print medium in the printer.
Here's how:
1. Open the Canon XXXX Properties or Canon XXXX Printing Preferences (NT
4.0: Canon XXXX Default) dialogue box and click the Main tab.
2. Click the down-arrow in the BJ Cartridge box and select the appropriate cartridge
specification from the drop-down list. (Not applicable to single-cartridge
printers.)

5
CANON BJ PRINTER DRIVER GUIDE

3. Click the down-arrow in the Media Type box and select the appropriate print
medium from the drop-down list.
Note
?4 It's possible to set BJ Cartridge automatically by clicking the Detect... button
on the Main tab. For this feature to work, your printer cable must allow
bidirectional communication and bidirectional support must be enabled in
Windows. You can confirm bidirectional support is enabled by opening the Canon
XXXX Properties dialogue box from the Start menu and making sure Enable
bidirectional support on the Ports tab is checked.

Setting the Page Size

Set the page size you want to use from within your application before printing.
Also make sure the Page Size setting on the Page Setup tab of the Canon XXXX
Printing Preferences (NT 4.0: Canon XXXX Default) or Canon XXXX Properties
dialogue box matches the paper size setting in your application.

Confirming the page size

You can view the page size you're using in the graphic on the Page Setup tab. Make
sure Page Size matches the setting in your application before printing.

(NT 4.0: Page Layout box and Page Border, Reverse Order and Collate checkboxes absent)

6

2. Click the down-arrow in the Page Size box, then select Custom... from the drop-
down list.
The Custom Paper Size dialogue box opens.
3. Select millimeters or inches as the units of measurement with the Units radio
buttons, and enter the desired height and width.
4. Click OK.

Changing the Paper Source

Normally standard print media such as plain paper are loaded in the printer's auto
sheet feeder. So the default paper source setting is Auto Sheet Feeder.
Note
?5 Certain models only have an auto sheet feeder. The paper source setting
cannot be changed for these models.
?6 With the BJC-8500, the default paper source setting is Standard Cassette.
If you're using a special print medium that needs to be fed manually, change the
Paper Source setting from Auto Sheet Feeder to Manual Feed on the Main tab of
the Canon XXXX Printing Preferences (NT 4.0: Canon XXXX Default) or Canon
XXXX Properties dialogue box. Also, if your printer supports paper cassettes, you
can use these by selecting the appropriate Paper Source setting.

Optimizing Images
Low-resolution images, such as web-page graphics downloaded via the Internet, and
images you've enlarged with a graphics application often contain jagged edges. To
smooth these edges when printing, turn the Image Optimizer on.

Without Image Optimizer With Image Optimizer

For example, you can use the Image Optimizer when printing a low-resolution image
from a Web page on the Internet.
To turn the Image Optimizer on, do this:
1. Open the Canon XXXX Printing Preferences (NT 4.0: Canon XXXX Default) or
Canon XXXX Properties dialogue box and click the Effects tab.
2. Check Image Optimizer to enable the Image Optimizer setting.
3. Click OK.
The printer properties dialogue box closes and printing starts.
Note
?15 The Image Optimizer setting may have little or no effect on printing, depending
on the application you're using.
?16 The Image Optimizer setting has more effect on low-resolution images than on
high-resolution ones.
?17 Using the Image Optimizer may slow printing down.

15
CANON BJ PRINTER DRIVER GUIDE

If you want to print an image taken with a digital camera or acquired by a scanner,
you may want to correct any problems with the image-for instance, colour shift,
overexposure or underexposure. You can do this by applying photo optimisation with
Photo Optimizer or Photo Optimizer PRO, depending on which of these two features
your printer supports.

Without Photo Optimisation With Photo Optimisation

To turn photo optimisation on, do this:
1. Open the Canon XXXX Printing Preferences (NT 4.0: Canon XXXX Default) or
Canon XXXX Properties dialogue box and click the Effects tab.
2. Check Photo Optimizer or Photo Optimizer PRO to enable photo optimisation.
3. When printing image data that has been processed in some way, such as being
cropped or rotated, check Apply Throughout Page so the entire page will be
treated as a single image to be optimised.
4. Click OK.
The printer properties dialogue box closes and printing starts.
Note
?18 Photo optimisation does not work if you are doing banner printing.

Changing the Print Quality/Halftoning

If your printouts aren't satisfactory, the printer driver lets you make fine adjustments
to the print quality and halftoning settings.

Setting the print quality/halftoning

Note
?19 If there is a problem in the image data you want to print, the print quality and
halftoning settings may not be visible or effective.
1. Open the Canon XXXX Printing Preferences (NT 4.0: Canon XXXX Default)
or Canon XXXX Properties dialogue box and click the Main tab.

CANON BJ PRINTER DRIVER GUIDE

Print Quality
To improve the print quality, drag the Print Quality slider toward Fine. The
resolution and print mode change according to the setting of the slide bar.
Using a higher setting increases printing time.
Halftoning
The colours and shapes of printouts are reproduced by the ink dots ejected
from the nozzles of the print heads. Halftoning determines the colour
boundaries of intermediate tones.
Dither lines up ink dots of different colours according to rules specified in the
printer driver. Use this setting for printing graphics or charts with clearly-
defined colour boundaries.
Diffusion randomly positions ink dots of different colours. Use this setting for
printing natural images such as photographs.
Auto lets the printer driver automatically distinguish between the types of
image data and use the most appropriate halftoning method.
4. Click OK.
The Set Print Quality dialogue box closes.
5. Click OK.
The printer properties dialogue box closes.
Note
?20 Depending on the BJ Cartridge and Media Type settings on the Main tab,
some of the Print Quality and Halftoning settings cannot be used.

Adjusting Images
If the colour of your printouts is unsatisfactory, you can adjust the colour balance and
intensity. Use this feature only when you want to make fine adjustments to the colour
balance in the printouts, and do not change the settings too much. (Note that this
feature doesn't correct the overall colour balance of the image data as some image
editing applications do.)

Adjusting the colours

1. Open the Canon XXXX Printing Preferences (NT 4.0: Canon XXXX Default) or
Canon XXXX Properties dialogue box and click the Main tab.
2. Select Manual for Colour Adjustment and click Set....
The Manual Colour Adjustment dialogue box opens.
3. Set the following items as needed:
Colour Balance
Move the sliders for the individual colours. For example, when blues are too
strong in the printouts, drag the slide bar for Cyan to the left.
Print Type
Specifies whether printouts should emphasise intermediate tones or produce
bright and sharp colours. When you select Auto, the printer driver
automatically distinguishes among the types of image data, and switches to the
most appropriate matching method.

17
CANON BJ PRINTER DRIVER GUIDE

Brightness

Using Maintenance Functions

With the printer driver's Maintenance tab, you can access various functions that
affect how your printer performs. These functions vary with the printer model, so
some of the functions described below may not be available for your printer.

Cleaning the Print Heads

Cleaning the print heads clears the nozzles. There are two ways to clean the print
heads: normal print head cleaning and deep print head cleaning. Always try normal
print head cleaning first. If this doesn't correct the problem then try deep print head
cleaning.
Note
?21 Cleaning the print heads uses up a lot of ink, so only do it when absolutely
necessary.

Normal print head cleaning

To clean the print heads normally, do this:
1. Open the Canon XXXX Printing Preferences (NT 4.0: Canon XXXX Default) or
Canon XXXX Properties dialogue box and click the Maintenance tab.
2. Click Cleaning.
Print head cleaning begins.
Note
?22 For details on when to clean the print heads, see your printer manual.
?23 Depending on your printer model, a Print Head Cleaning dialogue box may
open when you click Cleaning, allowing you to select which print heads to clean.
?24 Print a nozzle check pattern to confirm the success of normal print head
cleaning. See Printing a Nozzle Check Pattern for details.

Deep print head cleaning

If normal print head cleaning does not correct the problem, perform deep print head
cleaning. Here's how:
1. Open the Canon XXXX Printing Preferences (NT 4.0: Canon XXXX Default) or
Canon XXXX Properties dialogue box and click the Maintenance tab.
2. Click Deep Cleaning.
Print head cleaning begins.
Note
?25 Always execute normal print head cleaning first. Only when the normal print
head cleaning does not correct the problem, perform deep print head cleaning.
?26 For details on when to clean the print heads, see your printer manual.
?27 Print a nozzle check pattern to confirm the success of deep print head
cleaning. See Printing a Nozzle Check Pattern for details.

Printing a Nozzle Check Pattern

The nozzle check pattern confirms whether the inks are being correctly ejected from
the print head nozzles and whether the print heads are correctly aligned. Print the

19
CANON BJ PRINTER DRIVER GUIDE

nozzle check pattern when your printouts are streaked or the colour tones are not
correct, or after print head cleaning was performed.

Printing a nozzle check pattern

1. Open the Canon XXXX Printing Preferences (NT 4.0: Canon XXXX Default) or
Canon XXXX Properties dialogue box and click the Maintenance tab.
2. Click Nozzle Check.
3. When a confirmation message appears, make sure paper is loaded in the printer
and the printer is on.
4. Click OK.
5. Look at the check patterns and do the correction procedure.
There are separate patterns for the Black BJ Cartridge and Colour BJ Cartridge.
For details on pattern correction, see your printer manual.
Note
?28 If cleaning has no effect, do normal print head cleaning and deep print head
cleaning again. If, after cleaning the print head several times, the nozzle check
pattern is still not satisfactory, the print heads may be worn out and the BJ
Cartridge must be replaced.
?29 For details on how to replace the BJ Cartridge, see your printer manual.

Aligning the Print Heads

With dual-cartridge and some single-cartridge printer models, each time you replace
a BJ Cartridge or switch BJ Cartridges for a special print job, you must align the print
heads to ensure optimum printing.
Some models have a manual print-head alignment feature, and other models also
have automatic alignment. If you have a model with the automatic print-head
alignment feature, but automatic alignment does not work for some reason, execute
manual print-head alignment.
Normally, you don't have to worry about whether your printer uses an automatic or a
manual print-head alignment system. Just start print-head alignment and follow the
instructions that appear on the screen.

Starting print-head alignment

1. Open the Canon XXXX Printing Preferences (NT 4.0: Canon XXXX Default) or
Canon XXXX Properties dialogue box and click the Maintenance tab.
2. Click Print Head Alignment.
3. When a confirmation message appears, make sure the printer is on and A4- or
Letter-size plain paper is loaded in the printer.
4. Click OK.
What happens next depends on whether your printer has the automatic print-head
alignment feature or not.

20
CANON BJ PRINTER DRIVER GUIDE

If your printer has automatic print-head alignment

The printer starts to print the head alignment pattern. Once this pattern has been
printed, print-head alignment is complete.
Note
?30 The automatic print-head alignment feature may not work properly in the
following circumstances:

alignment
The printer starts to print the standard head alignment pattern. Once this pattern has
been printed, do this:
1. Click Yes in the confirmation message dialogue box.
2. Check all the patterns.
For each pattern, enter the appropriate number where the lines come closest
together.
When you finish entering numbers, click OK.
3. When a confirmation message appears, make sure the printer is on and A4- or
Letter-size plain paper is loaded, then click OK.
The printer starts to print the high-speed or high-resolution head alignment
pattern.
4. Check all the patterns.
For each pattern, enter the appropriate number where you see the lines most
perfectly aligned.
5. When you finish entering numbers, click OK.
6. Click OK.
The print heads are now in alignment.
Note
?31 To return the setting from manual print head alignment to automatic print head
alignment, disable Align heads manually in the Custom Settings dialogue box
and click Send.

Check to increase the pause in the print head operation while the print job is
being executed. Use this setting to prevent the next page from stacking on top
of a printed page before it is dry.
Set printer to ECP mode
Check to use the ECP mode setting to operate the printer. For details on the
ECP mode setting, see Using ECP mode, below.
Automatically align heads after replacing BJ cartridge

Starting the BJ Status Monitor

Depending on your printer model, the status of the printer can be monitored by the
BJ Status Monitor. Normally, the Status Monitor starts automatically when you print
something and stops when printing completes. If a problem occurs during printing,
the Status Monitor will report it to you so you can correct it.

If you want to check the printer status when the Status Monitor hasn't automatically
started, you can start the Status Monitor manually from the printer driver like this:
1. Open the Canon XXXX Printing Preferences (NT 4.0: Canon XXXX Default) or
Canon XXXX Properties dialogue box and click the Maintenance tab.
2. Click Start Status Monitor.
The Status Monitor starts.
See the Status Monitor's online help for details on controlling the way the Status
Monitor starts and stops.

Using ECP mode

Normally, data is transferred between the computer and printer in "compatible"
mode, which supports the widely used Centronics printer interface standard.
If you want, you can change the data transfer method to ECP mode. ECP mode
allows data transfer between the computer and printer at a higher speed while
maintaining compatibility with the Centronics standard. Depending on the computer
system, this reduces printing time.
Important
?34 Before changing the data transfer method to the ECP mode, be aware of the
following:
The computer system and printer cable you're using need to support ECP
mode. For details, contact the hardware manufacturer.
The parallel port needs to be set for ECP in the BIOS settings of your
computer. Before you change the BIOS settings of your computer system, see the
documentation of the computer you're using, or contact the computer
manufacturer.
Note
?35 If the print job cannot be executed properly after changing to ECP mode, do
this:
1. Click Custom Settings on the Maintenance tab.
2. Uncheck Set printer to ECP mode in the Custom Settings dialogue box.
3. Click Send.
ECP mode is turned off.
