FY 2013 Summary of Activities

The FY 2013 program organized by the Cleveland Section featured a number of diverse activities ranging from technical presentations to
outreach events. A listing of the events is summarized in the following table.

Conference The OVSC is a regional conference of ASCE student chapters from the University
(OVSC) of Akron, Carnegie Mellon, the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati State Technical
and Community College, Cleveland State University, the University of Dayton,
Hosted by the Geneva College, the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville, the Ohio
Student Chapter State University, Ohio University, the University of Pittsburg, Western Kentucky
at Cleveland State University, and Youngstown State University.
University
These student chapters meet and put their engineering skills to the test with
some friendly competition. The competition consisted of 9 events: Steel Bridge,
Concrete Canoe, AutoCAD, Balsa Wood Bridge, Environmental, Surveying,
Technical Paper, Concrete Horseshoes, and Concrete Bat.

The University of Louisville won the overall Steel Bridge Competition.


Youngstown State University won the overall concrete canoe competition. The
University of Louisville won the AutoCAD competition. The University of
Western Kentucky won the Balsa Wood competition. Cincinnati State Technical
and Community College won the Environmental competition. Cincinnati State
Technical and Community College won the Surveying competition. The
University of Akron won the Technical Paper competition. The University of
Western Kentucky won the Concrete Horseshoes competition. Youngstown
State University won the Concrete Bat competition

The Overall Conference Championship went to the University of Western


Kentucky. The best teams from each of the competition advanced to their
respective competitions at the national level.

April 21, 2013 Earth Fest 2013 Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds (10:00 AM - 5:00 PM)

Organized by the The event is the longest running Earth Day festival in
EWRI Chapter the nation. Earth Fest is also Ohios largest
environmental education event, drawing thousands of

environment.

ASCE volunteers organized and staffed a booth at Earthfest 2013. The exhibit
featured a working model of a rain garden, live sample of green roof, and ASCE
outreach materials.

A distinguished panel of representatives from regional infrastructure
organizations was convened to discuss the ASCE 2013 Report Card on Americas

July 26-27, 2013 Burning River Saturday, July 26rd 6-11 pm and Sunday, July 27th 1-6 pm. Coast Guard Station at
Fest 2013 Whiskey Island. Cleveland, OH.

Organized by the Cleveland Section ASCE volunteered at the Great


EWRI Chapter Lakes Burning River Fest on Saturday and Sunday
July 26 and 27, 2013 held at the Coast Guard Station
Outreach Event at Whiskey Island. Volunteers staffed the ASCE
booth designed to demonstrate some of the ways
civil engineers are contributing to building more
sustainable infrastructure. The exhibit featured a
working model of a rain garden, handouts, and fresh
baked cookies!

The event is intended to raise awareness of


environmental issues affecting the Great Lakes
region and Cuyahoga River ecosystem.
Remembering the 1969 burning of the Cuyahoga River the annual
Burning River Fest features educational exhibits from local
environmental groups, live music, and food from local eateries. Proceeds from
the event go to the Burning River Foundation, a non-profit organization, to help
fund their grant program which goes to support individuals and organizations
with pursuing environmental projects.
