Course : EPT I (ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TEST)

Code/Credit : ING 533 / 3 Units
Time : 16 Sessions (Including Mid-Term and Final Exams)

Objectives:
A. General Instruction
This course of four English practice skills such as: reading, writing, use of English,
listening, and speaking. Students can practise these tests on their own or with the help
of a teacher.

B. Specific Instruction
1. (Reading). Students will do a task which consists of three parts , each containing a
text and some questions. Part 3 may contain two or more shorter related texts.
There are 30 questions in total, including multiple-choice, gapped text and
multiple-matching questions.
2. (Writing). Students will do a task which consists of two parts which carry equal
marks. In Part 1, which is compulsory, candidates have to write either a letter
or an email of between 120 and 150 words. In Part 2, there are four tasks from
which candidates choose one to write about. The range of tasks from which
questions may be drawn includes an article, an essay, a letter, a report, a
review and a short story. The last question is based on the set books. These
books remain on the list for two years. Look on the website, or contact the
Cambridge ESOL Local Secretary in your area for the up-to-date list of set books.
The question on the s et books has two options from which candidates choose
one to write about. In this part, candidates have to write between 120 and 180
words.
3. (Use of English) 45 minutes. Students will do a task which consists of four parts
and tests control of English grammar and vocabulary. There are 42 questions.
The tasks include gap-filling exercises, word formation and sentence
transformation.
4. (Listening) 40 minutes (approximately). Students will do a task which consists of
four parts. Each part contains a recorded text or text s and some questions,
including multiple-choice, sentence completion, and multiple -matching. Each
text is heard twice. There is a total of 30 questions.
 5. (Speaking) 14 minutes. Students will do a task which consists of four parts. The
standard test format is two candidates and two examiners. One examiner takes
part in the conversation while the other examiner listens. Both examiners give
marks. Candidates will be given photographs and other visual and written material
to look at and talk about. Sometimes candidates will talk with the other
candidates, sometimes with the examiner and sometimes with both.

C. Learning Process/Activities

1 (Reading)
You are going to read a newspaper article about a musical family.
You are going to read an article about a bird called the kingfisher. Seven
sentences have been removed from the article.
You are going .to read a magazine article in which various people talk about
their jobs.
2-3 (Writing)
You are planning to visit your friend Robin in Canada. Robin has written
to you. Read Robin 's letter and the notes you have made. Then write a letter
to Robin, using all your notes.
Write an answer to one of the questions 2-5 in this part. Write your
answer in 120-180 words in an appropriate style. -You see this
advertisement in an English language newspaper.
-Write your letter of application . Do not write any postal addresses.

4 (Use of English)
Read the text and decide which answer which is the best fits each gap about
Paper, Competition: Your Ideal School, New Waterproof Clothing

5 (Listening)
You will hear people talking in eight different situations
You will hear an interview with Elizabeth Holmes about her experience
working in Africa.
You will hear five different employees talking about what makes a good
boss.
You will hear an interview with Trina Trevose, a pop singer who is only
fifteen.
6 7 (Speaking)
You take the Speaking test with another candidate, referred to here as your
partner. There are two examiners. One will speak to you and your partner
and the other will be listening. Both examiners will award marks.

8 Mid-term test

9 10 (Reading)
 You are going to read an extract from a novel.
You are going to read a newspaper article about a board game called
'pichenotte'.
You are going to read an article about four sportsmen.
11 -12 (Writing)
Your English-speaking friend, Sam, is an art student and has written to you
with a request. Read Sam's email and the notes you have made. Then write
an email to Sam, using all your notes. (You must answer this question.
Write your answer in 120-150 words in an appropriate style.)

13 (Use of English)
Read the text and decide which answer which is the best fits each gap about

14-15 (Listening)
You will hear people talking in eight different situations.
You will hear an announcement about an evening's programmes on Radio
Pearl.
You will hear five different people talking about the way they study.
You will hear a girl called Tricia Simpkins talking at a public meeting about
a plan to create a nature reserve in the centre of a large city.
16 Final Test

D. Attendance
The minimum of attendance is 75%. Absence more than 75% is not allowed to attend
final test.
