Why this
approach is
different?
This is a practitioner-led model where experienced
and hands-on data scientists in Nigeria and in the
Diaspora train and mentor young Nigerians through
face-to-face, virtual coaching classes, project-
based support and holiday boot camps funded by
individuals and corporate organisations

In addition, it incorporates dual model, bottom-up

model that trains, inspires and mentors the would-
be data scientists and a top-down model where we
engage C-level executives and decision makers on
how Data Science can add value to the the
society/business.

It is time to develop
Nigerians to lead the
Data Science revolution
in Africa
We live in a new world where everything is tracked,
mapped, and recorded in digital bits. A growing per-
centage of Nigerians have smartphones and thus
the entire life of a person can be catalogued in the
digital realm. The life of a man can be understood by
the footprint he has left on multiple digital channels.
Many hidden truths about the world we live in can
now be unlocked through the power of data. Our new
ability, the breakthrough analysis of data, is leading
us into new discoveries that will forever change how
we live and interact with the world around us.

Data is now the blood of todays business and the

ultimate enabler of the evolution of 21st century
society. The best and the richest of the future are
those who have gained superior mastery in how they
translate massive data into actionable insights, im-
pactful business decisions, enhanced services to
customers, and the avoidance of risks and losses.
Data science is the new emerging interdisciplinary
field leading this revolution. Data Science is the art
of turning data into actions. These actionable
insights may include solutions that can be used for
determining the best products to recommend, how
traffic patterns influence consumption, weather
forecasts, stock market predictions, production pro-
cess improvements, epidemic trend detection, and
how best to engage certain customers with targeted
advertising, etc.

This approach is completely different from the tradi-

tional silo-based analytical practice, which is largely
dominated by reporting the past or explaining the
present. Data science provides a futuristic and pre-
scriptive roadmap which combines the past, present
and future in completely unrelated scenarios and
multi-dimensional contexts to provide answers
beyond the obvious.

Data Science is the art of

turning data into actions.
Impact of Data Science on businesses worldwide
Recent statistics from Booz Allen Hamilton show the transformation
impact of data science in a firm:

big data
Data science affects academic and applied research
in many domains, including machine translation,
speech recognition, robotics, search engines, digital
economy, but also the biological sciences, medical
informatics, health care, social sciences, and the hu-
manities. It heavily influences economics, business,
and finance.

From the business perspective, data science is an

integral part of competitive intelligence.

The future of business and social leadership is inex-

tricably linked to the excellent practice of data sci-
ence.
What can Nigeria
learn from India?
By 2018, the worldwide market for data analytics is
expected to be worth $48.3 billion. Enterprises are
now increasingly outsourcing their data analytics
processes to less expensive locations like India.
According to TechNavio, the Global Data Analytics
Outsourcing market is expected to grow at a CAGR
of 30.54% over the period 2014-2019.

Today, India is a key outsourcing destination with a

market share of 60% to 70%, as of 2014. The data
science sector is expected to grow from USD $1.23
billion in revenue in 2014 to USD $3.3 billion in rev-
enue in 2020, a 18% CAGR. This leapfrog opportunity
explains the growth in data science entrepreneur-
ship in India, with an estimated 500+ start-ups in
India providing analytics solutions. Many of the
young Indians who run their firms have the same
demographic profile as an average Nigerian under-
graduates and post-NYSC with raw skills that can
leveraged for profitable and globally beneficial
advantages.
Nigeria has a very high cluster of graduates in nu-
merate disciplines and many in the post-NYSC age
bracket are largely under-employed. The growing
opportunities in big data and data science outsourc-
ing therefore mean that Nigeria can become the No 1
Africas hub for breakthrough data science solutions
if we urgently build the capacity through a shared
learning community and inspirational mentorship
scheme. With an inspiring roadmap that focuses on
integrating business and academia in a synergistic
effort, Nigeria can become the data science Silicon
Valley before 2025. This can be achieved through pro-
active learning via an inclusive motivational platform,
where every class of Nigerias citizens can be trained
and retrained to use data science to answer African-
centric social questions that can support business
successes and the development of society.

Beyond the opportunity to profitably engage many

young Nigerian graduates with numerate qualifica-
tions, data science can lead a revolution in city plan-
ning, road and traffic management, health
risks/epidemic prediction, weather forecasting, etc.
Data Science is a most
desired career today!
Data scientist is at, or near, the top of just
about every best jobs survey, report, or study
released in the past few years. Harvard Busi-
ness Review named it the sexiest job of the
21st century. Glassdoor rated the Data Scien-
tist profession as the No. 1 Best Job in America
for 2016. CareerCast.com also rated Data Sci-
entist as the No 1 profession. These two ratings
have been extensively cited. It has essentially
become a given that being a data scientist is
one of the hot jobs of today.

It is, however, becoming painfully clear that

data scientists and analytics talent in general
are in chronically short supply. McKinsey
recently estimated that by 2018, the U.S. alone
could face a shortage of 1.5 million managers
and analysts "with the know-how to use the
analysis of big data to make effective deci-
sions".
Objectives of the Data
Science Nigeria Project
Promote the big data and data science approach in solving
Nigerias business and social developmental problems.

Promote big data education and research through strategic

partnerships with world-class institutions and knowledge
and best practice sharing groups.

Promote international opportunities in data science scholar-

ships, training and internship.

Build a Nigerian data science ecosystem where users, learn-

ers, service providers and software/platform providers can
share mutually beneficial knowledge necessary for the devel-
opment of the industry.

Build a Nigerian outsourcing hub for young Nigerian entre-

preneurs to access global projects and build rewarding
careers in data science.

Promote the use of data science and advanced analytics

methodologies in university research, e.g. network/graph
theory in social science, etc.

Create strategic platforms for knowledge and best practice

sharing amongst senior level C-level executives, business
leaders and operational experts in data science.
How do we want
to drive the agenda?
Public awareness programmes for all Nigerians to appreciate
1 the business and socio-economic role of data science as
foreign exchange earner.

Workshop for C-level executives and senior government offi-
cials

Showcase of local case studies and impact

2 The development of specific data science intervention pro-

jects that address specific business and social issues in
Nigeria through business/academia joint projects and inter-
campus competitions. Examples are :

Development of a traffic prediction model and how to opti-
mise the traffic lighst in Lagos

Twitter comments and the impact on stock prices of leading
Nigerian listed companies.

3 The creation of data science mentorship programmes where

experts at home and abroad are engaged to mentor young
data scientists in Nigeria.

4 Create an entrepreneurial hub for young data scientists to set

up global businesses and access global data science pro-
jects.
