ABSTRACT

Biodiesel is the name of a clean-burning, non-toxic alternative fuel made from vegetable oils
that can be used in compression-ignition (diesel) engines. As an alternative to fossil fuels, bio
fuels must be technically feasible, economically competitive, environmentally acceptable, and
readily. Regarding these properties, biodiesel has been widely recognized as a promising
biofuels. Since fossil fuels increase greenhouse gas emissions and cause global warming, the
use of alternative resources like bio fuels are more pronounced every day. For example, the
European Community has decided to replace at least 5.75% of the yearly consumed fossils
fuels by biofuels, by the year 2010. The use of these bio fuels does not contribute to the growth
of green house gases. As the petroleum will contribute to the environmental problem such as
global warming, a new alternative have been founded that the used of petroleum can be
replaced by the biodiesel. This biodiesel especially made from the soy bean oil have few
advantages such as it is renewable source and environmental friendly. The differences of the
soy bean oil compared to the other crops such as rapeseed, canola, tallow and yellow grease
also being determined. In order to determine the effectiveness of the biodiesel when applied to
the transportation engines, few changes need to be done so that biodiesel can be used widely.
The changes that needed to be done are change the diesel engine to the biodiesel engine and
thermostat and tank switch the placed. The production of the biodiesel from the soy bean widely
used in United State and Europe but in Malaysia there is no biodiesel from the soy bean
because there is an insufficient source.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

In the name of Allah S.W.T, The Most Gracious and The Most Merciful first and foremost. We
would like to express sincere gratitude to Allah S.W.T for His abundant generosity, and strength
to us during the process of completing our report.

Firstly, we would like to express appreciation to Faculty of Chemical Engineering

Universiti Teknologi MARA Shah Alam for providing good facilities for the purposes for research
and analysis.
To our beloved parents for their regarding moral and financial support during our study.
We pray and wish the both of you healthy and in Allah mercy’s always.

In preparing this report, we was in contact and get reference with my lecturer. They have
contributed towards our understanding and thoughts about the objective of this report. In
particular, we wish to express our sincere appreciation to our lecturer Associate Professor
Thevy, for his support, guidance, friendship, advices and invaluable assistance during the
course to complete this project. Moreover, we are much obliged to her for working under a
rather tight timeline, for in doing so, she greatly enabled my expedited pursuit of completing this
project.

Finally, we would like to express our deepest appreciation to all our group members and
friends who have given us moral supports, opinions, cooperation’s suggestions, and invaluable
information’s in completing our report. And last but not least, thank you to all who assisted and
making this project a success.

TERM OF REFFERENCES

On January 29th, 2009 Associate Professor Thevy instructed Mohamad Asyraf, Mohd Hafis, Ab
Jalil and Muhammad Firdaus to write the report and to submit report of Production of biodiesel
by using soy bean oil. This report need to submit on March 29, 2009.
