JANETH AFUEKWO UBAWUCHI (1930 - 2006 )

"THE ROSE OF UMUOFOR"


Mrs Janeth Ubawuchi was originally from Ndenwaru , Akanu Item , Abia State Nigeria , the
daughter of Chukwu Mmaju . She was married to chief Clement Ubawuchi in about the year
1954/5 and they lived in Kano , Northern Nigeria "ERIMEAGWUGWU" as she was fondly called
by his numerous admirers was a very industrious women . She had seven children - Gordy ,
Emeka , Uzoamaka , Ngozi , Mary , Peter(Iyke) and Paul (Chuddy) . Her industriousness led to
her and her husband building properties in Kano State and theb first storey buildind in Umuofor.
Shortly after the dawn of the Nigerian CIVIL WAR (1967 - 1970) , she came back to the Eastern
Nigeria with her children . No sooner she came back than she hired labourers to cultivate yarn
and cassava and the harvest the next year was bountiful . Her resillience brought her plenty of
respect among other woman and men beyound Umuofor . This also led to her jingering her
husband to build the first storey building in Umuofor . She was not educated but vowed that all
her children must be educated . She sold her clothes and her jeweleries to put he children ttrough
school . In 1972 , her husband who was working in the ECN (Electric company ) was transfered
to ENUGU and urged her and the children to relocate there . This they did and she started selling
food items at Ochanja market Enugu . In 1974 , they came back to the village . Mrs Janeth was
never a passive woman , she got a contract in Community Secondary School Eziama Obiato ,
Imo State to supply Akara and Akamu to the students in the burden house in 1978 . She defied
death in 1979 , when she got hit by a car into the gutter in front of Alvan Ikoku & college of
education Owerri , she was a faith woman (Anglican church mother) . Her children are all well
established & living with their families in different parts of the world . Gordy(Texas , USA) Dr
Emeka(Manchester , England) , Uzoamaka(Owerri , Imo state) , Ngozi and mary (married) , (Ps
Iyke - Johannesburg , South Africa)(Engr Chudi , Onitsha, Nigeria . Janeth refused to partake in
the Owu festival and refused to recognise the Ekenjiaba(the Python Snake God) . Janeth
Ubawuchi lived to be 76 years old and passed away in October 17th 2006 and was given one of
the best funeral; attended by multitudes(clergy men and others) . During every mothers day in
Christ Church Umuofor in her days , while all the attention were focused on the mothers , she
comes out with her popular song for the fathers "NDI BU NNA NWERE OLU HA" meaning that
the fathers are also important . They are the providers of the family , and the agents of
procreation . The mothers day will never be the same again without her .
