EXERCISE #11

What Do You Value?

When we arent totally clear about our values and beliefs, we arent always able to act
in alignment with them, and this is often a major source of disappointment in ourselves. Only
by discovering what we really value can we gain confidence and trust in our abilities and
actions.

Knowing our values is often a confusing endeavor, because we are so influenced by

the values of our family, friends, and society. Differentiating between your values and the
values of others is key to being confident with your individuality. Dont worry if what you
value seems wrong or selfish at firstthis might happen if youre shifting from conforming to
someone elses values to deciding your own. Think of things that make you feel most like
yourself when you act on them. Things that make you feel proud to be you.

Here's a list of some core values to help you brainstorm your own list: honesty, health,
humor, integrity, security, leadership, openness, fulfillment, discipline, wealth, understanding,
compassion, enthusiasm, fairness, achievement, ambition, creativity, courage, freedom,
respect, security, spirituality, happiness.

This is by no means an exhaustive list. Once you have made your own list, choose one
value and think of one time when you have lived in harmony with it and one time when you
have lived in disharmony with it. Describe both these times in your lifehow you felt, what
you did, how others related to you, etc. Compare these two experiences and think about
what changes you need to make to be more in harmony with yourself.
