All piping on the project will be checked for sustained , occasional and thermal loads, »
one of the following three methods:
. Computer formal analysis (with Caesar II software) method
. Hand calculations or
. ‘Visual inspection per criteria in Appendix "A"
3.2 Selection Criteria
‘Computer Methods, Hand Calculations or Visual Inspection
The piping engineer shall conduct a mandatory investigation of piping systems which meet
fhe following selection criteria for formal computer analysis, other lines will be qualified by

A formal computer analysis need not be performed on some of the piping systems, provided
they meet one of the following requirements
: Piping systems which are duplicates, or are revised without significant changes of
successfully operating operations (ASME B31.3, Paragraph 319.4.1(a))
. Piping systems which can be readily judged adequate by comparison with previously
analyzed systems (ASME B31.3, Para, 319.4.1(b)), or
: Piping systems which can be analyzed using acceptable hand calculation or method
presented in Appendix A.
STRESS ANALYSIS ISOMETRICS
Based on the stress analysis selection criteria, the Piping Engineer will prepare a stress
analysis line list which will be submitted to the lead piping coordinator. Preliminary analysis
will be performed utilizing hand drawn stress sketches, Comments, configuration changes,
and support choices and locations will be transmitted to piping design, Stress isometrics will
be downloaded from PDS as system isometrics. Piping engineering will review these
isometrics vs. their original analysis. If required, reanalysis will be performed on these
isometrics. For analyzed lines, the acceptability of final fabrication isometrics will be made in
comparison to the final formal analysis.
STRESS ANALYSIS PROCEDURE & GUIDELINES
Each isometric will be documented in a stress analysis line list on IPMS and assigned an
isometric number as shown below.
Stress Isometrics - Assign sketch number, e.g. JT-100-001
JT- Lead Designer's initials
100- Cost Code Area Number
001- Line Number Sequence Number
The line number of each line on the isometric shall be listed in the title of the stress isometric;
see titleblock of B&R standard EF-084-46.65. If a stress isometric covers more than one area,
then the cost area number for an area most representing the line shall be used.‘CONTRACT NO. |

Calculation numbers shall be assigned as follows.
Calculation Number - e.g, XXYYZZ.
XX- The first two digits will be the P&ID area, e.g. 01,02, etc.
YY- The middle two letters will be the system designation, eg, P,HS, etc
Note: For the few three letter systems utilize the first two digits; e.g, HXS would be HX.
If the system has only one letter just use that one letter, e.g. 02P01
ZZ~ The final two digits will be a sequence number, ie. 01, 02, 03, ete.
The project is an imperial metric job. Pipe O.D.'s and insulation thicknesses are in English
units. Pipe lengths, distances between supports, etc. are in metric units,
Each analyst will document piping, properties, valves, material, and others stress analysis
input data pertaining to each problem.
Valve dimensional data and weights must be obtained from the valve cut-sheets prepared for
use in piping design. It is necessary that the correct valve weights for each valve type are
Secured from the selected valve suppliers for input to the analysis of critical piping systems,
such as lines to/from gas compressors and pumps, and any piping system that requires spring
hangers.
Rod hangers should be avoided in fireproofed areas or within 15 feet of grade
Use of expansion joints shall be limited
Piping to be designed for differential setlement as defined by the civil group soil report.
Based on the preliminary soil report information, 0.25" will be utilized for differential
settlement between foundations.
Lines, requiring analysis going to Battery Limits will be restrained to have negligible
‘movements at an anchor point agreed to near the Battery Limits,
Use teflon slide plates up to 350 deg F when the distance from the slide plates to the pipe is
equal to or Jess than the thickness of the insulation. If that distance is greater than the€@> Brown & Root, Inc. KR-245

thickness of the insulation, discuss the use of the teflon slide plates at temperatures higher
than 350 deg F with the area lead.
Upon completion of the problem, the Piping Engineer will review the output for technical
acceptability and code compliance.
Tris the Piping Engineer's responsibility to assure proper support and analysis of piping, where
analysis shows support liftoff.
Upset conditions will be utilized for analysis of piping systems, including nozzle load
qualification. The key is meeting the Codes requirement for utilizing maximum/minimum
pipe metal temperatures.
COMPUTER PROGRAMS
‘The computer programs listed below will be employed to perform the types of analysis
shown:

STRESS ANALYSIS REQUIREMENTS
Piping systems will be analyzed forthe effects of static and dynamic loadings, as applicable to
each stress analysis problem. The types of loads to be considered in the analysis for each
individual case will be determined by the Piping Engineer.

Per UCC standard PPM-520, loads for non-rotating equipment nozzles shall be submitted to
the vendor if:
2) The resultant force is greater thatn 300 times the pipe nominal diameter or,
+) The pipe stress at the nozzle location is more than 2/3 of the stress allowable.
UCC also requires that nozzle qualification packages be submitted to them during the project.
Details on this package will be developed later.
PIPE SUPPORTS AND GUIDES
Support Span
Pipe support span charts, based on EQUATE piping specifications, deflection and stress
criteria have been prepared (see Appendix B) for use on the project. Piping design and
nsinecring personnel will locate the pipe supports based on these charts and the following
considerations
; .
Jn order to impart proper stability to @ piping system and to provide the necessary supports to
meet their intended purposes, the following considerations will be included while locating
piping supports
In 8 properly designed piping system, the support load at different supports due to gravity load
Will be approximately equal in magnitude and will always act downward. If a piping system
's improperly supported, the support reactions will be unequal or negative in magnitude (.¢.,
acting upward), A concentrated load, such as valve weight, may not only cause the pipe to
Sag excessively, but may generate high dynamic loads (due to high wind velocities ete.) if not
adequately supported and guided
Latge diameter (Greater than 36") piping must be supported on pipe saddles if excessive point
loading is determined to be causing a localized overstress situation in the lineBrown & Root, Inc.
