Never Forget: U.S. Plutocracy Uses Government and Media to
Manufacture Fear and Consent

W
hen it comes to 9/11, there are two
groups of people: those who dont
know exactly what happened, and
those who orchestrated it.
Nearly everyone on Earth belongs in the
former category, but many like to pretend
they have a rock-solid understanding of the
events that transpired on that fateful day in
2001. Scoffing mainstream adherents like
to pretend theyre confident that the official
narrative is accurate, but they arent. A lot of
hardcore conspiracy analysts like to pretend
they know the real story, but they dont.
Theres simply not enough publicly available
information for anyone to be certain exactly
how things went down that day; all we can
know for sure is that (a) the official story is
riddled with plot holes (/y/fear), and (b) the
American power establishment has an exten-
sive and well-documented history of using
false flag events and propaganda to generate
widespread fear, manipulating the public into
supporting evil acts of military intervention-
ism abroad and authoritarianism at home.
If you think you know for a fact that the
official story of what happened on Septem-
ber 11, 2001, is the true account and that all
conspiracy theories have been debunked,
you are ignorant. If you think you know the
precise details of how what really happened
differs from the official story, youve spent
way too much time diving down conspiracy-
theory rabbit holes and should probably
ease off the weed. Theres no need to get all
defensive and go bedding yourself down to
one hard doctrine of certainty when the U.S.
power establishment has already discredited
itself so thoroughly. Its unnecessary to plunge
deep into theory when these peoples track
record is so firmly established in fact.
Here are just a few examples of the U.S.
government distorting the reality of events in
order to manufacture fear and public support
for military intervention.
The False Nayirah Testimony
On October 10, 1990, a 15-year-old girl
known only as Nayirah testified (/y/fear1)
before the Congressional Human Rights
Caucus about the horrors that Iraqi troops
were inflicting upon the people of Kuwait.
Her testimony that hundreds of babies had
been taken out of their incubators and left
to die on hospital floors was repeated as fact
by Amnesty International, the mass media,
numerous senators, and President George
H. W. Bush, tugging at the heartstrings of
Americans and manufacturing support for
American action in the Gulf War.
It was a lie (/y/fear2). Nayirah was in fact
the daughter of the Kuwaiti Ambassador
to the U.S., and her TV-friendly removing
babies from incubators testimony was false.
It never happened.
The Gulf of Tonkin Incident
In 2005, a declassified historical study
by the NSA revealed (/y/fear3) that one of
the two incidents that were used to propel
America into the disastrous Vietnam War
happened the opposite of the way it was
reported to have happened, and the second of
the two incidents did not happen at all. The
allegation that there were deliberate and
unprovoked attacks upon the U.S. Navy in
the Gulf of Tonkin on August 2 and August
4 of 1964 was solemnly affirmed (/y/fear4)
by President Johnson, which led to the swift
passage of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (/y/
fear5) authorizing full presidential authority
to commit US military power to the Viet-
namese intervention.
In reality, the August 2 incident was not
in any way unprovoked, and it was in fact
Americas USS Maddox that fired upon
North Vietnamese boats first. On August
4, there was no engagement with any ships
whatsoever, with Johnson privately admitting
(/y/fear6) a year later that For all I know, our
navy was shooting at whales out there.

But when the smoke was over, the dead
buried and the cost of the war came back to the
people in an increase in the price of commodi-
ties and rent that is, when we sobered up
from our patriotic spree it suddenly dawned
on us that the cause of the Spanish-American
War was the price of sugar.

This goes way back. The Austin Green (/y/
fear7) documentary Shadowring (/y/fear8)
describes how the Spanish-American war
was brought on by a highly suspicious explo-
sion upon the USS Maine while it was docked
at the Havana Harbor in 1898, combined
with the anti-Spain narratives from the
plutocrat-owned newspapers of that time.
Like all U.S. wars, it was extremely profitable
and benefited the very rich.

rally the unwashed masses behind military
endeavors on behalf of the rich and powerful
has probably been going on since the dawn
of civilization, and it is only humanitys
increasing adeptness at networking and shar-
ing information that has enabled us to begin
catching on to the deceitful manipulations of
the people who rule us. Our history books are
doubtless riddled with countless inaccura-
cies as to the real reasons underlying violent
conflicts between various kingdoms and
factions, because the few literate people who
were permitted to write the official historic
accounts of them had full control of the nar-
rative at the time.
This is why weve been seeing increasingly
blatant panic from existing power structures
about alternative media. Whoever controls
the narrative controls the world. It is only by
general societal consensus that power exists
where it exists, that money works the way
it works, etc. At any time the public could
stop honoring existing power structures
and create an entirely different model for
itself, deciding to distribute resources and
allocate responsibilities in ways that benefit
more people more efficaciously than the
current paradigm. It is only by their ability
to manipulate and control the mainstream
narrative that powerful people have been able
to keep this from happening.
Fearful Consent Fueled by
Media Wars
If the power elites didnt need the consent
of the public to rule, they wouldnt have to lie
constantly about their reasons for war. The
public would never consent to military inter-
ventions if politicians were allowed to appear
on CNN and say Yeah, well, America has
become a stronghold for the most powerful
plutocracy in the history of civilization and
it needs to maintain its status as the worlds
only superpower in order to protect the
investments of that plutocracy. This is why we
have to keep knocking the pillars of support
out from underneath Russia and China, and
why I get millions in re-election campaign
donations.
Pessimistic readers wont like hearing this.
But the reality is that Americans are basically
good people who generally want whats best
for the world. If they werent, the unelected
power establishment which rules over them
wouldnt have to keep making up lies about
babies in incubators and protecting their
families from Weapons of Mass Destruction
in order to secure U.S. hegemony (/y/fear9). If
they ever told the public the truth, theyd be

dealing with tens of millions of heavily armed
Americans telling them to get their socio-
pathic asses out of here.
What this means is that those of us who
want whats best for America and the world
instead of endless war and economic oppres-
sion are necessarily locked in a media war (/y/
fear10) with the plutocracy and its cronies.
The populist alternative media owned and
operated by ordinary people is the natural
enemy of the plutocrat-owned mainstream
media designed to prop up the existing power
structure with establishment propaganda.
Our ability to win this media war increases
the more networked and Internet-literate our
society becomes, which is why the oligarchs
have been working overtime to shut us down
with corporate censorship (/y/fear11).
There is no reason to believe anything
these lying sociopaths say, especially not
about something that has served such a
crucial role in their openly stated agenda (/y/
fear12) to ensure U.S. dominance over the
world using its military and economic might.
The extremely influential neoconservative
think tank Project for the New American
Century stated (/y/fear13) in September of
2000 that America would require a new
Pearl Harbor to advance this agenda. We got
exactly that one year later in a tragedy used
to manufacture support for greatly expanded
U.S. military interventionism abroad and a
surveillance police-state here at home. As the
above examples show, theres no good reason
to accept the oligarchys official story with a
trusting Yeah, that sounds legit.
These people are liars, and they are
depraved. They have no problem using lies
to kill a million Iraqis and thousands of
U.S. soldiers to advance their agendas (/y/
fear14), and theres no reason to believe they
wouldnt kill U.S. civilians as well. Theres no
harm in familiarizing yourself with all the
details about the various conspiracy theories
surrounding 9/11 if thats what you want to
spend your brainpower on. But really, all you
need to realize is that the U.S. power structure
is riddled with known liars who have no
problem slaughtering countless people to
advance their agenda of global domination.
There are no reasons to trust the corporate
medias fear mongering narratives, and many
reasons not to give in to the plutocracys
weapons of mass distraction.

Senator Brady Embarks on a
Magical Mystery Tour
T
he four leaders met last week, but
didnt appear to accomplish much of
anything.
It was Senator Bill Bradys first lead-
ers meeting since his chamber officially
confirmed him as the Senate Republican
Leader, and he was the one who called
for the sit-down. Leader Brady ran for
governor three times, winning the 2010
primary. Numerous associates say he
wants to make the most of this new role
and be as relevant as he possibly can.
Brady helped restart the Senates stalled
grand bargain talks in early May by
outlining a five for five plan that raised
$5 billion in new revenues alongside $5
billion in cuts. That proposal was widely
believed to have been drafted by Governor
Bruce Rauners office and foreshadowed
his subsequent election as leader.
A startling 18 of Bradys 22 Republi-
can members are up for reelection next
year, so Brady needs to maintain a close
relationship with the wealthy governor
to hold off primary opponents and fund
general election races.
Theres also a very real and growing
worry that Governor Rauner will be a
significant drag on down-ballot Repub-
lican candidates next year, adding to the
problems the party may very well also
have with a national backlash against
Republican President Donald Trump. The
fact that no Republicans have yet emerged
to run for three statewide offices (secre-
tary of state, comptroller, and treasurer)
should tell you something.
So Brady reportedly wants to do
whatever he can to help the governor help
himself and, by extension, help his caucus.
And a plan for state construction projects
would most definitely be a big help.
Brady has an idea in mind. But one
person who was briefed last week said it
wasnt so much a plan as A magical mys-
tery tour looking for someone to love it.
Several sources say its a public-private
partnership (PPP) proposal, meaning the
state would seek out investors to help hold
down government costs and dampen the
need for a big tax hike to pay for it. Gover-
nor Rauner said last week that he opposed
raising the gas tax to fund a capital bill.
The House Speaker didnt warm to
Rauners last PPP idea for a toll lane on
Interstate 55. The House Democrats com-
plained that Rauners office shouldve just
handed the proposal over to the tollway
board, which already has the legal author-
ity to do such things and is, they pointed

out, required to get first crack at projects
involving tolls anyway. There was also
the usual suspicion about which investors
would benefit from such a deal.
Beyond the Democrats not wanting to
give the Republican governor a win by
allowing him to announce sweet projects
during a crucial election year, there are SEASON PREMIERE

school funding reform, there still isnt
much trust at the top.
So some Democrats wonder whether
Brady and Rauner are floating this idea
in order to ultimately blame Democrats
for not going along with them after the
GOP moves the goal posts a dozen times.
Or, perhaps, is it designed to somehow
lure the Democrats into countering with
a gas tax hike, which they can then be
blamed for?
Leader Brady is generally a sincere guy
and he definitely wants to accomplish
big things in his new job, so take that as Find us wqpt.org
you will.
Governor Rauner has in the past
demanded reductions to the prevailing
wage as part of any capital plan deal. If
this plan has any significant poison pills,
the Democrats will likely just take their
chances with the 2018 election.
And even if it is labor friendly,
the Democrats will undoubtedly want
some sort of ironclad assurances that
money will actually be spent in their
own districts, including and (probably)
especially in Chicago. Theres also a very
real concern that Rauners administration,
badly hobbled by firings and resigna-
tions, will bungle the administration of a
capital plan.
The Amazon HQ2 search, with its
promise of up to 50,000 high-paying jobs,
also has to be considered here.
Our states bickering political families
have to put on their best possible face
when the prospective client comes over for
dinner. Any public rekindling of this hor-
ribly partisan feud could cost the state big.
And, hey, capital money may be needed
to entice the company into building its
second headquarters in or near the city.
Im not holding my breath at all, but it
would be nice if they can put this together.
We need the jobs.

Ring of Fire, at the Circa 21 Dinner Playhouse through November 4
A
t the opening night for the Circa
21 Dinner Playhouses Ring of Fire,
the show began with its eight-
person cast, one by one, declaring, I am
Johnny Cash. Throughout the perfor-
mance, they all at some point embodied
the spirit of The Man in Black. And
while the production boasts a 34-song
set list covering much of Cashs long
songwriting career, I use the phrase set
list intentionally, because the produc-
tion does feel more like a concert than a
traditional musical.
Having never previously seen Ring
of Fire, I went in expecting a plot with
characters and Cashs music enhancing
the story. However, aside from our being
given a few historical tidbits about the
artists life, the show instead seamlessly
transitions from song to song, following
the timeline of Johnnys life while rotat-
ing through performances by a musically
talented cast. Between them, I witnessed Travis Smith, Amy LeGrand, Candice Lively Wollan, Tim Drake, Bob Payne, Deborah Kennedy,

Scrambled Eggsy
KINGSMAN:
THE GOLDEN CIRCLE
Director Matthew Vaughns action
thriller Kingsman: The Golden Circle
opens with a high-speed taxicab melee
underscored by Princes Lets Go
Crazy, and I initially presumed it to
be par for the Kingsman course more
hyper-edited, ultra-violent nonsense
involving cartoonish CGI and an iconic
pop tune. But it turns out that this par-
ticular scene, with this particular song,
is actually serving as the films mission
statement, because for 140 minutes,
Vaughns follow-up to 2015s Kingsman:
The Secret Service is undeniably crazy.
Not good, not even half-good, but certifi-
able nonetheless.
The guy were theoretically rooting
for in that opener is, naturally, Taron
Egertons franchise hero Gary Eggsy
Unwin, the former street tough whos
now an upstanding member of Englands
elite spy unit the Kingsmen, having
been trained, in the previous movie, by
Colin Firths debonair, now-deceased
Harry Hart. (Cinematic comic book
that this is, dont be surprised when
Harrys deceased status deserves those
quotation marks.) Following a murder-
ous attack on the organization, this
new adventure finds whats left of the
Kingsmen teaming with their American
counterparts the Statesmen in order to
prevent a psychotic drug lord from kill-
ing hundreds of millions of people a
narrative that sounds like a textbook case
of Hollywood-sequel super-sizing. But
The Golden Circle, to both its credit and
detriment, doesnt subscribe to bigger is
better so much as bughouse is better.
If it didnt, would we have Julianne
Moore as chipper cartel queen Poppy
Adams, whose secluded Cambodian-
jungle headquarters has been fashioned
into an Eisenhower-era community
christened Poppy Land? (Its Main Street
which appears to be its only street
boasts a salon, one-screen movie theater,
and diner where Poppy gleefully grinds
offending goons into hamburger.) Would
we have Eggsy, now in a committed
relationship with The Secret Services
Princess Tilde (Hanna Alstrm), plant-
ing a tracking device on/in his subject
by going to third base? Would we have
Harry Hart resurrected as an amnesiac
Taron Egerton and Mark Strong in Kingsman: The Golden Circle
lepidopterist? Would Channing Tatum
and Jeff Bridges be on hand as, respec-
tively, a sharpshooting redneck named
Tequila and a drawling bigwig named
Champagne? Would the films emotional
apex come from Mark Strong singing
John Denvers Take Me Home, Country
Roads? Would Elton John, for the love
of God, have a major supporting role as
a kidnapped Elton John, and performing
takes to the camera like a feather-wear-
ing Jim Halpert?
Given all this, its astounding that I
couldve ever been bored by The Golden
Circle. Your jaw, however, can only
drop so far when youre busy yawning,
and director Vaughns latest is like that
loud, obnoxious party guest who doesnt
realize his Look how eccentric I am!
act is tiresome as hell. The superficial
nihilism of Vaughns original just
like the superficial nihilism of his 2010
Kick-Ass was exhausting enough, with
only the natural charm of Egerton and
Firth making its self-conscious slickness
tolerable. This continuation, though,
is an even more deadening experience,
because its impossible to give two hoots
about anything that happens here when
its so apparent that Vaughn doesnt care
if you care.
To the shock of no one, Elton
John proves to be no actor, so theres

absolutely nothing at stake in his far-
too-many scenes. (Eltons casting, and
the nature of his role, are meant to be
jokes, and their only crime is that theyre
in no way funny.) Yet from The Golden
Circles punchline-designed viscera to
the narrative thats just an apocalyptic
version of the 21 Jump Street plot, were
not allowed to feel anything at this cyni-
cal, smirky endeavor that treats both
heroes and villains like easily disposable
objects good only for a few throwaway
chuckles, and in no way original ones.
Again, familiar tunes Eltons Saturday
Nights Alright, Cameos Word Up
are employed as satiric accompani-
ment to squib-bursting violence. Again,
comic irony is intended in the dichotomy
between all that advanced weaponry
and all those tailored suits. And again, a
Kingsman movie emerges as so nox-
iously self-satisfied that our being there
doesnt seem at all necessary. This thing
would happily give itself the Peoples
Choice Award.
THE LEGO NINJAGO
MOVIE
When Tina Fey and Amy Poehler,
in 2015, took the stage for their third
consecutive stint as hosts for the annual
Golden Globes, Fey observed that they
were only back because in Hollywood,

if something kind of
works, theyll just do
it over and over again
until everybody hates
it. On that note, I had
a decent time at direc-
tors Charlie Beans,
Paul Fishers, and Bob
Logans The Lego Nin-
jago Movie ... and still
kind of hated it.
There are, as
ever, plenty of spiky
throwaway gags and
pop-culture riffs,
with the unexpected
arrival of Annies Its
the Hard-Knock Life,
played as a flute solo,
a particularly giggly
treat. (I also adored the
sardonic employment
of Jerry Maguires most
moving song selection,
especially after that movie was merci-
lessly teased in The Lego Batman Movie.
What did Cameron Crowe do to so piss
off the Lego peeps?!) The animation is
typically stellar, with the Lego figurines
just scuffed and dirty enough to suggest
many months of playtime usage. And
even when their material is lacking, were
given amusing vocal support from the
likes of Dave Franco, Kumail Nanjiani,
Jackie Chan (whos also, briefly, an on-
screen presence), and Justin Theroux, the
latter sounding uncannily, and probably
intentionally, like Will Arnett. But Lego
Ninjagos underwhelming weekend box
office indicates that, landing so soon
after Lego Batman, Im not alone in
thinking Enough already!, especially
in regard to the tedious sameness of the
series storytelling techniques, narrative
arcs, sentimental detours, life lessons,
and tendencies to become the exact films
theyre purportedly mocking. There
are several more Lego movies on the
horizon, but dont be surprised if crowds
begin to collectively demand a garage
sale.

Ive been dating this girl for just over
a month, and she never offers to pay for
anything. I was okay with this in the begin-
ning, as I saw it as a courtship thing. I guess
I wonder whether this points to problems
down the road with her not being a real
partner, pulling her weight, etc. How do I
politely broach this without blowing up the
blooming relationship?
Feeling Used
This woman lives paycheck to paycheck.
Unfortunately, its your paycheck.
At this point, youre probably musing on the
perfect birthday gift for her a sparkly little
Hello Kitty crowbar she can use to pry open
her wallet. However, mystifying as it is that she
has never squeaked out the words This ones
on me!, consider that if theres one thing het-
erosexual men and women have in common
these days, its confusion over who exactly is
supposed to pay on dates.
The problem driving the confusion is a
sort of Godzilla vs. Mothra clash between
age-old evolved emotions (still driving us
today) and modern-day beliefs about male and
female equality.
As I explain with some frequency (per big
cross-cultural studies by evolutionary psy-
chologist David Buss, among others), women
evolved to seek male partners who show they
are willing and able to invest in any children
they might have. Whether the particular
woman actually wants children is immaterial
as in, of zero interest to her emotions.
Anthropologist John Marshall Townsend
observes from his research (and that of others)
that womens emotions evolved to act as a sort
of police force for a mans level of commitment
making women feel bad when the investment
isnt there. This leads women to either push
a man to invest or ditch him and find a man
who will.
Men co-evolved to expect this, meaning
that men evolved to try to appeal to the ladies
by showing (or successfully faking) generosity,
high status, and earning power. Many people
mistakenly assume evolved adaptations like
this will change with the times, as in, Ye Olde
Evolved Emotions, Id like to introduce you to
Gloria Steinem and the womens movement.
Unfortunately, evolution is not a lickety-
split process especially when it comes to our

generations (generations being 20- to 30-year
periods) to fashion any complex cognitive
adaptation. So women, even now even
highly successful women who can comfortably
pay for their own meals (and everyone elses in
the restaurant) have their emotions pushing
them to look for a man who shows generosity,
as well as the ability to provide.
This is reflected in the findings by soci-
ologist Janet Lever and her colleagues from
a survey of heterosexual men and women
17,067 unmarried and non-cohabitating
heterosexuals ages 18 to 65 on the extent to
which they embrace or reject the traditional
man pays dating behavior. (Surprisingly,
millennials responses were generally pretty
close percentage-wise to those of older adults
mostly within a few percentage points.)
A snapshot of the responses from women:
Overall, 57 percent of women said yes to I
always offer to help pay, even on the first date.
But check out the mixed feelings: Many women
(39 percent) wished men would reject their
offer to pay. But many (40 percent of women)
said they are bothered when men dont accept
their money. Hello, confusing financial stew!
Mens responses were similarly contradic-
tory. Overall, more than half the men 64
percent said that after the first few dates, the
woman should help pay expenses, and nearly
half (44 percent) said they would stop dating a
woman who never offers to pay. Yet over-
whelmingly, men that is, 76 percent of men
feel guilty if they dont pay the bill on dates.
So the reality is, like all of these conflicted
men, some women just arent sure where the
lines are on whether to chip in and when. (Of
course, some women are conveniently unsure.)
As for this woman youre seeing, it is possible
that shes waiting until you two are exclusive
to start picking up the tab. Instead of assuming
the worst, do two things: First, observe and
reflect on her behavior and attitudes so far
and as you get to know her and see whether
they suggest an interest in partnership or
princess-ship.
Second, simply ask: Hey, weve been dating
for a while, and it seems like we should start
sharing the costs. Where do you stand on
that? See what she says and take it from there
tempting as it is to opt for a passive-aggressive
approach, like panhandling outside the restau-
rant where youre meeting her. Hey, Amber
youre early! Meet ya inside. Just trying to beg
enough for the tip.

Dinosaur Jr. Brings Its Sludge Pop to Codfish Hollow, October 27

F
irst Dinosaur Jr. existed and they were
good, then they didnt exist for a time,
then they came back and were somehow
still good. This is the narrative often flossed
by fans and the press over the decade since
the Massachusetts-based sludge-rock/
distorted-pop warriors came back from the
dead in 2007. Of course, legions of bands
have reformed after their prime, casting
any hope at recording worthwhile new
material to the wind and hopping into the
arena-cash-grab circuit, having discovered
the lucrative path of waiting a long time
and letting new young people discover your
music on the Internet.
Dinosaur Jr. never fit this mold. (The trio
composed of J. Mascis, Lou Barlow, and
Murph plays Maquoketas Codfish Hollow
Barn on Friday, October 27.) Though
technically bigger than ever, simply by the
sheer force of more humans being alive and
staying alive now than when they started,
the band still plays relatively smaller venues,
and still releases music with the relatively
small label Jagjaguwar. Theyve also man-
aged to maintain a catalog of releases with
immaculate quality control.
The bands latest LP Give a Glimpse of
What Yer Not arrived last year. The record
plays to the bands strengths without
retreading older material as much as one
record by the same rock band cant help
but sound like another. Mascis guitar tone
blasts from the speakers in all of its fine-
grain glory. His chunky blocks of sound
pummel when he breaks into distorted
chugging riffs, and shine with mid- and
high-range detail when he rockets off into
melodic solos or leads to harmonize with
his vocals. He also isnt afraid to tonally
shake things up in key structural turning
points, as he veers into flanged, almost
sitar-like tones or quivering noise-feedback
leads for climactic moments. Lou Barlows
bass provides the gut punch missing from
Mascis more fried, tinny guitar work.
Murphs drumming is the Dinosaurs steady
rock backbone. His tightened snares are
massive hits, and just as loud in the mix,
if not louder, than the bass drum telling
you exactly when to bang your head, if you
couldnt tell otherwise.
If these elements sound uniformly like
hard rock, J. Mascis vocal delivery plants
them closer to the pop and singer/song-
writer sides of the spectrum. Far from the
shouts or growls of his contemporaries,
Mascis sounds like a good-natured slacker
trying to croon a pop melody and suc-
ceeding. His voice rises and falls through
lines that actually move with his chord
progressions. It might be a stretch to call his
style Neil Young-esque, as Mascis sings
in a very different range from his spiritual
godfather. But the comparison is not too far
from the mark when you hear the supremely
Crazy Horse-core arpeggios crackle with
overdrive behind him on I Told Everyone.
He rarely sounds like hes straining himself
more like hes quietly, tunefully humming
a ditty through a mic turned up so high
that any voice would sound out over the din
behind him. Dinosaur Jr. would be a formi-
dable rock band if Mascis merely doled out
his lines in monotone, but the personality
and warmth of his voice, its world weariness
and exhausted emotional bite, provide the
spark that pushes their songwriting beyond
six-string shreddery.
Give A Glimpse of What Yer Not features
two tracks penned by bassist Lou Barlow,
whose yearning upper-register voice offers
a counterpoint to Mascis glummer, lower
end. Barlow favors cleaner guitar tones,
faster moving chord progressions, and
moments of soaring melody closer to the
peaks of R.E.M.s choruses or, better yet,
the charming lo-fi songcraft of his long-
running Sebadoh project. Album closer
Left/Right shimmers and slowly stomps
through an almost balladic atmosphere,
highlighting Barlows vocals in the mix as
Murphs drums swell from snare bursts to
driving tom-tom patterns. The dichotomy
between Barlow and Mascis brings to mind
the two-songwriter model of the bands
immediate predecessors, and brief contem-
poraries, Hsker D with Bob Moulds
stoic anthems juxtaposed against Grant
Harts looser, more stargazing compositions.
Mascis and Barlow have a clear difference
in vibe and delivery. But their willingness
to stray from conventional templates and
explore differing modes of expressions
continues to animate and sustain their
project.
