1. Purpose
The purpose of this Register of Environmental Aspects & Impacts is as follows:
a) To make information available to management.
b) To provide a record and understanding of the current environmental aspects at each location and enable updating
as required.
c) To enable screening of the environmental aspects and decisions to be made on the focus of the environmental
programmes.

2. Responsibility
The Environment Manager is responsible for maintaining the Register of Environmental Aspects and Impacts and
approving changes made to it.

3. Definitions
Environmental aspect = element of an organisation's activities or products or services that can interact with the
environment.
Environmental impact = any change to the environment, whether adverse or beneficial, wholly or partially resulting
from an organisation's environmental aspects.

4. Procedure
Environmental aspects and impacts are identified in accordance with System Procedure OP07 Identification of
Aspects.
Significance scores are allocated by applying the following guidance.

A significance score results from multiplying each of the scores allocated for the above 6 criteria.
Aspects with positive impacts are highlighted green on the Register of Environmental Aspects & Impacts.

5. Environmental impacts
Further details regarding the environmental impacts referred to in the Register of Environmental Aspects & Impacts is
as follows.

Water Pollution Harm to aquatic habitats and species, groundwater and drinking
water supplies.
Land Contamination Pollution of soils which can directly harm human health,
vegetation or be mobilised to surface or groundwater.

Resource Depletion Depletion of finite natural resources, for example fossil fuels,
minerals, fresh water, biodiversity, soil fertility, land.
Habitat Destruction Destruction of natural habitats either directly through greenfield
development and insensitive grounds maintenance or indirectly
through pollution or resource depletion.

6. Review
The Register of Environmental Aspects & Impacts and the significance scoring shall be reviewed and updated at least
annually, and also if there is any significant change to equipment, operational practices, legislation, stakeholder interest
or in response to any significant incidents.

A direct impact is one that arises as a direct result of your activity, eg the design of a building DIRECTLY uses resources (paper, fuel etc). Most activities undertaken by contractors/suppliers will have a DIRECT IMPACT.
An indirect impact is one that is one step removed from your activity, eg the design of a building INDIRECTLY impacts on the use of resources (eg materials used to construct the building). Most activities undertaken by designers will have an INDIRECT IMPACT
