I. OBJECTIVES
The learners demonstrate an understanding of:
A. Content Standards the relationship among the locations of volcanoes, earthquake epicenters,
and mountain ranges.
The learners shall be able to:
1. Demonstrate ways to ensure disaster preparedness during earthquakes,
B. Performance Standards tsunamis and volcanic eruptions;
2. Suggest ways by which he/she can contribute to government efforts in
reducing damage due to earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions.

IV. PROCEDURES
Simply review the four layers of the earth by completing the ff.:
1. The thickest layer of the earth is the _ _ N _ _ _. (Mantle)
A. Reviewing previous lesson
2. The thinnest layer of the earth is the _ _ U _ _ . (Crust)
or
3. The innermost layer. _ _ _ _ R _ _ R _ (Inner Core)
presenting the new lesson
4. The third layer starting from the outermost part of the earth.
_ U _ _ _ _ _ R _ (Outer Core)
It was already discussed in Module no. 1 that when an oceanic plate is involved in
B. Establishing a purpose for
a plate boundary, it subducts to a deeper region known as the mantle. As it
the
subducts, its leading edge melts. Based from this, emphasize that the mantle has
lesson
a different temperature as compared to the crust where we live in.
C. Presenting To introduce the lesson, show a portion of the film The Core wherein the
examples/instances of characteristic of the earths core is being showed. From this, tell the students that
the new lesson in todays lesson, they will know whether the characteristics mentioned in the
film are facts or fallacies.
D. Discussing new concepts
and
practicing new skills #1 Students will do Activity 2 Our Dynamic Earth
E. Discussing new concepts LM p. 52-53
and
practicing new skills #2
F. Developing mastery Students will present their output & explain the properties, characteristics,

Assessment 3) Discuss also the answers to the guide questions of Activity 2.
G. Finding practical Ask the students to identify the composition of the layers of a boiled egg. Ask
applications of concepts them also to compare it to composition of the earths layers.
and skills in daily living
Summarize the lesson by asking the key concepts from the students:
LAYERS OF THE Composition Properties Other

Crust Silicon, oxygen, Solid in phase Suitable for living
aluminium, organisms
calcium, sodium,
potassium, iron,
magnesium,
titanium,
hydrogen, granite
& basalt rocks
Mantle Silicon, oxygen, Solid & liquid Materials found
iron and can flow easily,
magnesium, hot high temperature
rocks/molten
H. Making generalizations materials
and Outer core Iron & nickel liquid High temperature

For objective no. 1, use formative assessment:
Describe the layers of the earth by the specifications that follow:
1. Mantle , composition _______________
2. Crust , characteristic _______________
3. Outer core, composition _____________
4. Inner Core, property ________________

For the Activity, use the ff. rubrics:

5 pts. all the symbols are drawn in its corresponding layer
4 pts. 1 of the symbols in the provided grid are not drawn in its corresponding
layer
3 pts. 2 of the symbols in the provided grid are not drawn in its corresponding
layer
2 pts. 3 of the symbols in the provided grid are not drawn in its corresponding
layer
1 pt. 4 or more of the symbols in the provided grid are not drawn in its
corresponding layer

ACTIVITY on MAKING MODEL OF THE EARTH

Procedures:

1. Divide the class into 10 groups.

2. Provide a reading material to each group. The reading material is about the layers of the earth. Use the
underlined words in deciding on how to make the model.

READING MATERIAL:

The earth is made of four different layers: crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core.
1. The crust is the outer most layer. The temperature ranges from 0oF on the surface to 1600oF below. Its thickness is
about 3-5 miles under the oceans and 25 miles under the continents. The crust is relatively cold compared to the other
Earth layers so therefore it can crack, causing earthquakes. It is made up of many pieces, called plates which float on
the mantle located below the crust. Composition is common rock silicate compounds.
2. The mantle is located below the crust. The temperature is 1600oF at the top and 4000oF near the bottom. It is
approximately 1800 miles thick. The mantle is the largest layer of Earth and is composed of very hot, dense rock. This
layer of rock moves like thick, hot asphalt due to the extreme temperature differences between the top and bottom of
the layer. This movement causes the plates in the crust to move. Composition is iron, magnesium, aluminum, silicon,
oxygen, and silicate compounds.
3. The outer core is the next layer. The temperature is 4000oF to 9000oF and its thickness is 1400 miles. The outer core
is in liquid form because the material is so hot. It is composed of liquid iron and nickel. As the Earth rotates the liquid
core spins creating the Earths magnetic field.
4. The inner core is the center most layer. The temperature is around 9000oF. It is approximately 800 miles thick and is
made of solid iron due to extreme pressure. The inner core does not move but vibrates in place. The pressure on the
inner core is 45,000,000 pounds per square inch which is 3,000,000 times more than air pressure.

3. Based from the reading material, each group will make a model of the earth showing each layer.
4. Present the model to the class.
