E.g. the mechanisms that creates an explosive atmosphere including an explanation of the properties of a flammable substance
(flashpoint, UEL, LEL, AIT), gas groups, temperature class, hazardous area classification (zoning), etc.

Understanding of the general principles of types of protection and marking

E.g. explanation of the different protection types (Ex,d,e,n,ia/ib,etc) as well as the markings found on equipment such as ATEX
group and category, equipment protection levels (IEC), ingress protection, ambient temperature ranges, etc.

Understanding of those aspects of equipment design which affect protection concept

E.g. Flame paths (Ex d), Systems Protection Concepts (Intrinsic safety or IS), documentation considerations, creepage and
clearances etc.

Understanding of content and relevant parts of IEC 60079-14

An examination of the key points found in the standard and how they relate practically as well as key certificate
considerations/implications such a special (x) conditions.

General understanding of inspection and maintenance requirements of IEC 60079-17

An examination of the key points found in the standard including grades of inspection (visual/close/detailed), frequency of
inspection, inspection questions, etc.

Familiarity with the particular techniques to be employed in the selection and erection of equipment referred to in
IEC 60079-14
Including the selection of cables and appropriate cable glands, terminations, cable screening and IS earthing, etc.

Understanding of the additional importance of permit to work systems and safe isolation in relation to explosion
protection
Re-enforces attitudes and work processes in relation to safe working in a potentially explosive atmosphere.

Use and availability of documentation

Key information to obtain and where appropriate retain including IS Descriptive System Documentation

Use and production of installation records and production of job reports to the user
When and what to record as well as record retention

Practical skills necessary for the preparation and installation of relevant concepts of protection
A team based exercise is conducted to re-enforce equipment selection as well as equipment labeling.
An informal 2 hour session is included as part of the training in order that candidates have the chance to discuss / view amongst
other things a demonstration on how to make off cable glands correctly. This can include candidate participation where they are
given the opportunity to make a gland off themselves (away from the formal assessment).

Practical Assessments:
The practical element of the essentially split into 4 separate sessions to cover each of the modules listed above. Each session
requires the candidate to work on a rig as illustrated in the attached photographs. The candidate is required to work on 4 separate
rigs covering each of the modules listed. A time limit is set against each session as this is designed to stimulate the pressures
encountered whilst on site.
Breaking each of the modules down in turn:

For the Ex01 practical element candidates are expected to install a simple lighting circuit, this is designed to ensure that
candidates can select the right equipment, cable and appropriate cable gland. Other elements include permit to work issue,
performing a (safe) isolation of the circuit supply before commencing the installation, ensuring correct termination (creepage
and clearance) of individual cable cores, consideration of specific equipment requirements (special {x} conditions) and
ultimately final testing and de-isolation (Inc. permit sign off) as candidates are expected to demonstrate that the circuit
works.
All the necessary information for the candidates to perform this task is made available, some are presented to the candidate
prior to starting the session whilst other information is presented only when requested (part of the marking criteria).

For the Ex02 practical candidates are expected to perform an inspection of a pre-installed rig. The rig is designed to
stimulate an actual installation where a set number of faults have been applied (inc. designated zones, gas groups and
temperature Classes). Candidates are expected to carry out each grade of inspection as defined in IEC 60079-17, i.e. Visual,
Close and Detailed in order to identify a specific number of faults set against a marking criteria.

For the Ex03 practical element candidates are expected to install two simple IS (Intrinsically Safe) circuits or instrument
loops. As with Ex01 candidates are expected to use the information provided in addition to requesting information in order to
complete the two IS circuits. Other elements include IS earting, terminations (cable screen and spare cores) as well the
correct separation of individual IS circuits. As with Ex03 candidates are expected to request the correct permit and ultimately
prove that the circuit functions correctly.

For the Ex04 practical element are expected to perform an inspection of a pre-installed rig. The rig is designed to simulate an
actual installation (Inc. designated zones, gas groups and Temperature Classes) where a set of faults have been applied.
Candidates are expected to carry out each grade of inspection as defines in IEC 60079-17, i.e. Visual, Close and Detailed in
order to identify a specific number of faults set against a marking criteria.

Examination:
In addition to the above practical assessments candidates must sit a multi-choice exam. Subject to the points outlined below and
on successful completion of the exam and practical elements, candidates will be awarded a certificate of core competence. It
should also point out that in some cases candidates may fail individual units, this does not mean that they will not be awarded a
certificate rather the certificate will be awarded on the units passed.

Candidate Pre-Qualifications:
It is a pre-requirement of the course that candidates are able to demonstrate their underpinning knowledge and training as a
technical craftsperson.
