The monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of Highland Lakes Condominium Association was held on the
third Monday of the month, in accordance with the By-Laws of the Association. President Guy Balok called the
September 18, 2017 regular meeting of the Board of Directors to order at 7:00 p.m.
Attendance
The following Directors were present: Guy Balok, Sandy Nolan, Ann Creviston, Kathy Baldwin, Michelle Todorov
and Peggy Zonca. Kathleen Connor was excused. Also present were Joe Poma, Property Manager, and Emily

Grounds Committee Report: page 14
Discussion: The Township permitted the Association
to install the 7 Mile Rd. sign in the current location but
did not permit the use of fluted posts that are used on
the other street signs. The Township sign ordinance
requires that base material for the sign be the same
type of material that was used in the construction of
the Association buildings such as the Highland House
sign in front of the Clubhouse.
Joe requested that Ilio Alessandri create a drawing
of the sign with the specifications. Ilio submitted a
drawing which looks like a smaller version of the sign
in front of the Clubhouse. The Township has passed the
drawing. With the sign being as big as it is it will need
a concrete footing that goes down at least 3 feet. Joe has
requested a proposal from Concraft which he will pass
on to the Board once received. Then the decision can be
made whether to have the sign or to do without.

Kathy Baldwin, to approve the Grounds Committee
report of September 11, 2017. All in favor. Motion
passed.
Co-Owners Forum:
Tom Werner requested that a letter be sent out to
Windsor Ct. stating to dry paint out and cut carpet
before disposal. Currently residents in the Court are
dumping paint cans with paint in them out by the trash
corral.
New Business:
The Association received a bid for $7,475 which entails
expanding the concrete dumpster pad to include both
the waste dumpster and the recycling bin side by side
along with a pad behind it to house the tool shed. It is
not a budgeted expense but there is a budget for $10,000
for crack fill throughout the property that will not be
used in the current budget so there wont be a monetary
hit for doing the concrete work.

1. Renovation Update. Phase 1 is expected to be completed by September 30. This will include moving the chair closet and
installing floor in Highland Room. Phase 2 will begin the first week of October and will include hallway, handicap acces-
sible bathroom, ramp, kitchen, billiard room, and entrance from pool. This should be finished by Christmas.

2. New Business. Will consider revision of the rental check-off form when the kitchen is finished. Discussed unwanted dona-
tions and would like to discourage residents from placing discarded items in the Clubhouse.

3. Library Maintenance. Scheduled 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 7, to re-shelve books.

SUBJECTS DISCUSSED:

1. Welcome to Gayathri Rao, who has volunteered for Court Liaison of Dorothy Gay Court. We still need a volunteer for
Dearborn Court (6 months!) and Aqueduct Court becomes vacant this coming month.

2. There are many cable and phone junction boxes that are in need of repair on the property. Joe has been in contact with the
cable companies and the telephone companies to request they come out to repair and or replace them if necessary.

3. The election of officers was done and Joel, Diane and Barb will remain as officers.

4. Our annual Potluck Meeting will be in October. Stan will coordinate and contact Diane with details. Please note meeting will
be at 6:00 PM.

5. Guy mentioned that September 23rd from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm Northvilles DPW will be promoting Hazardous Waste
Day. Guy will be placing notifications outside in order to bring this to residents attention.

6. Mike brought up a concern in regards to repairs that have been done by our maintenance staff that have not been up to an
acceptable standard.

7. Guy is going to schedule a meeting with our committee to share ideas in regards to trash disposal in Highland Lakes.

SUBJECTS DISCUSSED:
1. Pool & Lifeguards: Money has been allocated to repair any problems and for upgrades to the pools next season.

2. Pool Issues For Next Season: There was a discussion on allowing residents to sit beside the pool beyond the red line. Joe will
check on any safety issues with proper authority but consensus was that the area beyond the red line is to be kept clear.
A resident suggested that the lap lanes be used only by swimmers and that another lane marker be installed for swimming lap
lanes. The committee agreed that lap lanes may be used by non-swimmers as long as they keep moving. Joe will check on the
cost of installing another lane marker but it will most likely be cost prohibitive.
The use of multiple pool noodles was discussed. The committee agreed that noodles will be limited to no more than two per
person. The rules will be amended to reflect this policy change.

3. Pool Closing Party: The party was September 3rd. The weather was nice. There was a good turnout and good food. It was a
fun way to end the pool season.

4. Adult Christmas Party: The adult Christmas party will be Saturday, December 2nd at 7 p.m. There will be great prizes and
food. Come and ring in the Christmas season with your neighbors. Please bring a dish to share that will serve 8-10 people.

5. E-Cigarettes and Tobacco Products: Agreed to amend Pool Rules and Regulations with a recommendation to the Board.

RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE BOARD: Amend pool rule #7 in the Pool Rules and Regulations to read as fol-
lows: "No eating, no drinking (except water in plastic bottles) within the pool enclosure. No smoking, including
E-Cigarettes in the pool area or on the terrace. All disposable smoking materials must be extinguished in receptacles
provided for that purpose prior to entering the pool area and the terrace. Smoking areas are immediately outside the
front doors of the Clubhouse, the north side door of the Clubhouse, and outside the gate leading to pool area."

2. Agreed to plant spring blooming perennials near the Serenity Garden.

5. Adopted planting design for the circle at Valiant Court. Next step is to present to them and schedule installation.

SUBJECTS DISCUSSED:
1. Discussed maintenance issues in Carmen's Corner: grass and buckthorn growing in area and within some of the perennials.
Plan to dig out the plants invaded by grass and buckthorn, get rid of the infested hostas, pull miscellaneous grass patches,
then replant with some shade adaptable perennials. Check to see if Thompsons may be available to help.

2. East edge of Crystal Lake starting to look unkempt, although more natural. Thought mowers could bite a bit deeper into
growth on top of the hill above lake. The areas on either side of the Swan Harbour Lake beach have gotten overgrown with
weeds, also looking unkempt. Maintenance of aesthetic areas in Highland Lakes is becoming difficult to keep up with.

3. Property Manager met with zoning variance board August 16th regarding locating of the new 7-Mile entrance sign and brick
base requirement. Variance granted on location, but not on brick base requirement, suggesting something like the Highland
House signage would be acceptable. Committee feels that would be overwhelming in that location, wanting instead a two
post solution like other signs in Highland Lakes.

4. Will bring in more potting soil to enrich planting areas in front of clubhouse.

Picnic 2017
The weather was perfect on Sunday afternoon, August
20th, for the first Lehigh Picnic. Several neighbors
gathered for sharing good food, conversation, and
laughter in the shady picnic area in front of 41304
Lehigh Lane, home of Dianne Hartman. It was a great
way to get to know neighbors and say good-bye to
Summer. Pictured are those who attended including:

Fall Gardening is for the Birds

W
hen fall arrives, most gardeners are planning to
put their gardens to bed. Blooms and foliage
are fading, trees are becoming bare its time
to trim, rake, and bag, right? Not if you want to attract
birds to your yard! Fall cleanup creates a barren waste-
land for birds and wildlife. If your yard provides nowhere
to find shelter against cold winter winds and nowhere to
forage for seeds, berries, and dormant insects the birds
will find somewhere else to reside. Dont miss out on
exciting winter birds this year; leave your leaves, stalks,
and stems!
Fall is a spectacular time for late-blooming flowers and
gleaming berries, which are two important elements of a
bird-friendly backyard. Many autumn-blooming flowers
later provide a valuable source of seed for birds. Following
the burst of lavender, white, pale blue, and brilliant
yellow, native aster (Symphyotrichum species), sunflower
(Helianthus species), and goldenrod (Solidago species)
blooms fade into fluffy clouds of nutritious se ed, vo ra-
ciously consumed by finches and sparrows. Long-distance
migrants flock to native berry-producing shrubs including
spicebush (Lindera benzoin) and viburnum and dogwood
(Cornus) species. Consider creating a native hedgerow
for migrants; trust us, non-native Japanese barberry and
burning bush cannot hold a candle to the value of native
shrubs. Other beautiful replacement shrubs that will
provide year-round bird food include native high- and
lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium species), fragrant sumac
(Rhus aromatica), and chokeberry (Aronia species).
A common concern with planting natives or
avoiding fall cleanup is the messy appearance, but
there are many native species that provide gorgeous
fall color and winter interest when left standing. Big leaf
aster (Eurybia macrophylla), as the name suggests,
brings large, interesting foliage in colorful hues to
shady, woodland gardens. Both wild geranium
(Geranium maculatum) and Virginia creeper
(Parthenocissus quinquefolia) appear to catch fire in
fall, turning a brilliant red. Young red-osier dogwood
(Cornus sericea) stems are also a fire-engine red that
contrast brightly against fresh snowfall.

Other stunning fall shrubs include winterberry (Ilex
verticillata), mountain ash (Sorbus decora), witch-hazel
(Hamamelis virginiana), and sumac (Rhus) species.
Grasses are often overlooked in gardens, but gramanoids
can provide a natural seed source and excellent shelter
for overwintering birds while giving interesting structure
to the garden. Shorter, clump-forming species are useful
in more manicured spaces; check out little bluestem
(Schizchyrium scoparium), purple love grass (Eragrostis
spectabilis), or prairie dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis).
For more naturalized areas, taller grasses including Indian
grass (Sorghastrum nutans), switch grass (Panicum
virgatum), and big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii)
provide ample cover and seed for birds.
So as the temperatures drop with the leaves, save your
time, knees, and back and shelve garden cleanup for
spring. The fall colors and textures are sure to delight,
if you can take your eyes away from the flurry of bird
activity.

Almond Gougere Ring

1 stick unsalted butter, cut into small pieces 1-1/2 c. grated Gruyere cheese
tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
tsp. pepper 1 egg yolk
1 c. flour 1 tbs. milk
4 eggs c. slivered almonds

Preheat oven to 375. In a heavy medium saucepan, combine the butter, salt and
pepper with 1 cup of water. Bring to a boil over high heat. Remove from heat and
add the flour all at once. Beat with a wooden spoon until the mixture is smooth and
pulls away from the sides of the pan. Continue to beat over low heat for one minute.
Remove from heat and let cool for one minute. Beat in the eggs, 1 at a time, making
sure each egg is completely incorporated before adding the next. Stir in 1-1/4 cups
of the cheese and the nutmeg. Mound large heaping spoonfuls of the mixture on a
buttered baking sheet to form a wreath; the inside edges should measure about 7
inches across. Lightly beat the egg yolk with the milk and brush on top of wreath.
Sprinkle the remaining cheese and the almonds over the top. Bake for 15 minutes;
lower oven to 350 and bake until golden brown and firm to the touch, about 45 min-
utes. Let cool for 10 minutes and serve. Serves 10.
