Plot Summary

Exposition

Aloo and his family lived in Uhuru Street. After his sisters got married, his mother decided to sell
her shop. They moved to Upanga, a quiet and remote town. Mother wanted her two youngest
children to concentrate on their studies.

Rising Action

One day, Aloo met Mr Datoo who came back from America. He became an inspiration for Aloo to
study in an American University. Aloo started to researching about American universities. He also
wrote to them to apply for a scholarship. However, Mother did not like the idea of him studying
overseas. Then, Aloo received repliesw from a university and received prospectus. He also got
accepted to a local university to study agricultural. Aloo was not interested with the offer. Instead,
he wanted to study medicine.

Climax

Aloo, Mother and his younger sibling had a discussion. Mother told Aloo that she did not have any
money to send him overseas. Aloo also realized that he had to fork out money for other expenses.
He told his mother he could take a part-time job to earn that extra money. Mother was angry
because of Aloos determination to study in America. She accused Aloo of being a disloyal son for
wanting to leave her. Aloo was upset because his mother did not approve of his dream. Both of
them got into a big argument

Falling Action

Mother and Aloo went to see Mr Velji to seek for advice. Mr Velji told Mother that going to
America would be good for Aloos education. He also mentioned that she might lose him if he
decided not to come home. That night, Mother asked Aloo to show her his university prospectus.
Mother finally decided to allow Aloo to follow his dream. Mother made him promise that he
would never marry a white woman, smoke or drink.

Resolution.

Mother received a letter from ALoo after he had left for America. Aloo told Mother he was
stopping by London to visit his friend.

expenses.

Mother she became a widow at the age pf 33. She used to run a shop in Uhuru street. She is a
loving mother. She refused to remarry for the sake of her children. She gave up her shop so that
her children could focus on their studies. Mother is also protective. She did not want Aloo to leave
her in order to pursue his dream of studying abroad. She also made a lot of sacrifices. She was
willing to let Aloo study overseas although she knew that her son might not return.

sadness of separation. The fact that Aloo was leaving for America to study really upset her as he
was the youngest child in the family and closest to her.
